return to Nick's Pinhole Photography I was a History major as an undergraduate, and I've always found it interesting to look at primary sources of materials. Here are some historical references and some articles on pinhole photography from the late 19th and early 20th century. In chronological order except where I've grouped a couple by the same author together.

In Chapter VI of Book 17, which covers a variety of optical topics, he was the first to describe the use of a small aperture to view an image in a camera obscura, and then goes on about how it works better with a lens.

You may have heard of pinhole photography, but what is it? You know it is a form of photography, but what is it exactly? Simply put, pinhole photography is a unique method of taking pictures, with a camera that has no lens. It is not a new art form, but it has recently gone through a renewed popularity. This renewed interest is due in part to the backlash to the onslaught of digital photography and art forms. As with digital photography, a pinhole camera can help bring your creativity alive. But with pinhole photography you can design and build the camera itself, creating an element of control that gives it a unique twist. Once the basic concept of a pinhole is understood, and you are able to create a workable camera and entire new world of possibilities are opened. And your only real limitation is your own imagination. If you have never tried pinhole photography and would like to know what it is, or if you have and would like to know more about the process, this article is written with you in mind.

Scott McMahon Description: In exploring the mysterious and fascinating qualities of pinhole photography, this workshop will begin with the introduction of the camera obscura. With a variety of materials such as wood, metal, foam core and found objects, participants will construct and then photograph with their own pinhole camera creations. Using film and photographic paper we will generate large format negatives and consider ways to interpret them in print form. We will experiment with zone plates (a distant relative of pinhole) and further examine ways to bridge the gap between high tech and low tech by retrofitting existing cameras, 35mm, medium and large format, holga, even digital SLRÕs with pinhole apertures.

A site dedicated to alternative photographic processes ( pinhole photography and kallitype printing)
and to everyone who believes that photography may be a kind of philosophy by Philippe Moroux In Nadeau's Encyclopedia of Printing we can read:
"Kallitype Process (Ger.: Kallitypie) Also spelled Callitype. A printing process patented by Dr. W.W.J. Nicol in 1889. Paper, or other suitable material, coated with a mixture of a ferric salt and silver nitrate."
On this site Philippe Moroux makes voluntarily no difference between the kallitype process and the Vandyke or Van Dyke Process. Van Dyke prints are Kallitype prints. May be the Argyrotype print could also be called a kallitype... Have a try?

Pinhole Photography
Pinhole photography mimics the techniques that were used for the very first cameras. It does not contain a lens. A pinhole camera can be a can or box that is very dark, or almost black, inside. Although the technique to make a pinhole camera is easy, loading the film and developing the pictures take some practice.
Characteristics of Pinhole Photography
A pinhole camera has no batteries nor does it use electricity. Instead, it uses a tiny pinhole to allow light through in order to expose the film to the subject of the photograph. This is unlike modern photography but the results can produce stunning photographs. It does take some practice to take a suitable photograph unlike most of today's point and shoot digital cameras. Taking a picture while using pinhole photography enables the photographer to make unique art that has a depth not usually seen in digital photography. The picture has a softer texture and the field of vision is wider. The length of time that the film must be exposed to the subject in order to produce a picture with a pinhole camera varies widely from a few hours to a few seconds. Because a pinhole camera looks so unusual compared to today's cameras, using one is an artistic experience itself. How To Make And Use A Pinhole Camera Tips and Techniques: Pinhole Photography 35mm Single-Lens Reflex Pinhole Photography How It Works-Basic
History of Pinhole Photography
The ancient Greeks used a form of pinhole photography in order to watch an eclipse safely without harming the eyes. Early astronomers used a small, dark room, called the camera obscure, to look at the image of an eclipse as it fell upon a blank wall opposite the tiny pinhole drilled in the wall. The hole allowed the image to come into focus.
