CHINESE JUNK: A large Chinese vessel with a high poop deck, prominent stem, full stern and lug sails. The Junk could be converted into an 80 foot terror. In the center of the hull was the magazine, watched closely by the captain. The captain lived with his wife or wives under the poopdeck, while the crew and relatives lived in dormitories in the cargo hold or on the deck itself. The galley was located on the after-deck in the open air. Pictured are replicas of the Pinta and Santa Maria, built for the 1992 quincentennial. Note the tiny topsail on Santa Maria. Christopher Columbus made his historic voyage together with the Niña, the Pinta (Caravels), The Santa Maria was a type of ship called a Nao. There has been much speculation about just how large such a ship would be. Carla Rahn Philips, puts the length of Santa Maria at 18 meters (about 55 1/2 feet), keel length at 12 meters, beam 6 meters, and a depth of 3 meters from keel to deck. LUGGER: A one, two or three masted vessel having lugsails only.

Kids' Mystery Themes
Fashions do come and go, but consider the following popular themes
  • Pirates Haunted House / Vampires School for Magic Princesses - Cinderella etc. Space / Sci Fi
Many of our mystery events are suitable for kids, but we also specialise in providing mysteries aimed at children. Whilst these formats could be provided for any age group, if you have a group of teenagers then you should also look at the page murder mysteries for teens . For those below about the age of 12 we would suggest that the party should revolve around the solving of clues, finding of treasures, completion of tasks etc. to solve a mystery. These tasks could encompass treasure hunts, games, craft activities/making things, completing obstacle courses etc., and would always be made suitable for the age range concerned.
Running a Mystery Party for Kids
Murder To Measure would typically provide two people to run a children's party, both of whom would establish the mystery story and guide the guests through the challenges to be completed in order to solving the mystery, find the treasure or unmask the villain. Usually each guest receives a goody bag for solving the clues and of course there is special attention payed to the birthday boy or girl where appropriate.

Pirates of the Caribbean: What Be A Pirate?
Return to Pirates of the Caribbean

What's a Privateer, Pirate, Buccaneer, and/or Marooner? There are several terms that one hears when discussing piracy. They are called, marooners, buccaneers, privateers and pirates. Depending on the source they can all mean the same. Typically however they are categorized as such. A Merchant is a ship commissioned by a government or company to perform specific noncombatant tasks, such as shipping cargo, transporting slaves, or perhaps obtaining bread fruit. They would sail under letters from companies or countries giving them permission to complete the tasks. The men aboard were called merchants, merchant sailors, or merchant marines. Merchant ships were often armed and sometimes escorted. The crew received their pay from the company or nation that outfitted the ship. A Privateer was an armed ship under papers to a government or a company to perform specific tasks. The men who sailed on a privateer were also called privateers. The papers were usually referred to as a

We began our group in the summer of 2006 as a way for like minded friends to gather for social functions and enjoy our love of all things piratical. As our group grew with new members experienced in more traditional pirate groups and some of us visited other groups, we have realized that is where we want to be. Over the past year our desire has grown to learn more and share more about St. Augustine Pirate history and piracy in general. We participate in local and outside area pirate functions while supporting civic and charity events. We will continue to this direction as our mission to celebrate our love for all things pirate.

A PRIMER FOR BVI BOAT CHARTER ERS
Aaarg! There are stories, songs and movies about them, yet no matter how they are romanticized; the pirates of the Caribbean were real. Today, there is plenty of adventure to be found in the islands, but if you are on a BVI boat charter , the pirate legends live on and you can be a part of the history. Buccaneers vs. Privateers If you are on a BVI boat charter Closely associated with the buccaneers were the privateers, looting pirates who worked under the sanctioning letter of their government. The cost of maintaining a fleet to defend the colonies was beyond the treasury of national governments of the 16th and 17th centuries. Private vessels would be commissioned into a “navy” with a letter of marques, paid with a substantial share of whatever they could capture from enemy ships and settlements, the rest going to the crown. These ships would operate independently or as a fleet, and if successful, the rewards could be great. England, in particular, viewed privateering as a low budget way to wage war

The Buccaneers
By Cindy Vallar The original buccaneers were hunters who lived on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. Their name came from the boucans they used to smoke the meat of wild animals. These tough, lawless men dressed in rawhide and skins and armed themselves with muskets, knives, and on occasion, swords. Eventually, the Spaniards drove them off Hispaniola, which fueled the buccaneers’ hatred of the Spanish. Those who went to Tortuga formed a brotherhood that became known as the Brethren of the Coast. By the 1630s, they were no longer hunters, but seamen. They wore coarse shirts, woolen breeches, and hats, or whatever other clothing they acquired from plundering ships. The common weapons of the buccaneering period included the matchlock musket, flintlock pistol, and hanger. The buccaneers initially used small flyboats or pinnaces to sneak up on larger Spanish vessels. Under cover of darkness, they jammed the ship’s rudder to prevent escape and boarded her before anyone aboard raised the alarm. Expert marksmen, they killed the helmsman and officers. Their barbarous reputation, especially when victims failed to yield, grew until surrender became the norm in hopes that the pirates would spare them. The buccaneers also raided Spanish towns. Their attacks resembled modern commando-style raids: fast, hard-hitting, achieved with surprise. Rather than approach a town from the sea, they landed farther down the coast and attacked from the land.

Pirates! Brigands, Buccaneers, and Privateers in Fact, Fiction, and Legend.
In more than a thousand entries (each impeccably researched, internationally focused, and extensively cross-referenced) Pirates! reveals the actual lives and exploits of pirates and the diverse worlds from which they sprangfrom Etruscan and Phoenician marauders off the coast of ancient Greece to the Chinese and Malay pirates of the 1870s. Beyond its immense value as a unique and hugely entertaining resource, Pirates! explores the rich mythology that has developed since their demise and examines their image as pop culture icons. From pirate slang to fictionalized buccaneering to listings of the richest booty ever captured, Pirates! is an authoritative and invaluable reference work for students, researchers, and non-specialist general readers alike!

Pirates, Buccaneers, Privateers
Basic distinction between types of pirates was in a manner and legitimacy of their actions. There is also difference in organization, actions and period of their activities.
Pirates
When we say a word pirate, we are usually thinking about the outlaws from the early 18 th century who harassed ships from all nations, including the very own. We can compare them to criminals. They worked only for themselves, didn't hesitate to kill innocent people and the most of them were always escaping from the laws and authorities. Compared to others, they had only a few ships in the fleet, and attacked mostly at the sea. Learn more about the pirates and piracy
Buccaneers
The buccaneers were pirates located in the Caribbean Sea . They were mainly from England and France. They fought with Spain army and plundered their colonies in the 17th century. Although they were more legal than the classical pirates because they fought for their nation and usually acquired authorization from the colonial governments. However, that was not enough as Spaniards always treated them as the ordinary pirates. Compared to other pirates, they were much better organized and usually attacked with enormous fleets. The buccaneers also organized land attacks, even on the rich towns deep into the continent. Learn more about the buccaneers
Privateers
Although some of their actions were similar to acts of piracy, the privateers were more soldiers then pirates. Most of them were commissioned during the war, by nation or some big company. By possessing a letter of marque, their actions were completely legal, but sometimes very limited. Privateers attacked only the ships and ports of enemy nations and when returning home from the raids, they had to share all the captured booty with their backers.
