It thus is one of the main branches of taxonomy Plant taxonomy is closely allied to plant systematics , and there is no sharp boundary between the two. In practice, "plant systematics" is involved with relationships between plants and their evolution, especially at the higher levels, whereas "plant taxonomy" deals with the actual handling of plant specimens . The precise relationship between taxonomy and systematics, however, has changed along with the goals and methods employed. Plant taxonomy is well known for being turbulent, and traditionally there is no really close agreement on circumscription and placement of taxa . See the list of systems of plant taxonomy
edit Identification and classification
Two goals of plant taxonomy are the identification and classification of plants. The distinction between these two goals is important and often overlooked.

What is plant taxonomy?
Taxonomy is about grouping things; plant taxonomy is about grouping plants. There are many ways to group plants. Many popular flower books group species by color; gardeners may group them by a combination of habit and color; herbalists might group them by their effects on humans. These are all valid special purpose groupings, but plant taxonomy is about grouping plants in such a way that the groups have predictive value This means that, if you know a plant belongs to group A rather than group B, it will also share other characteristics of group A, even those that were not used to decide which plants go into group A . It is this predictive ability that makes the groups of scientific plant taxonomy particularly valuable. Predictions based on a taxonomic group are not always correct, but they are more likely to be correct than incorrect if the taxonomic group is appropriately circumscribed . Consider some examples: Example 1: You are told that a plant is a tree. Can you predict whether it has flowers or cones? Suppose you are told, in addition, that it has blue flowers. Can you tell whether the flowers are radially symmetric (circular in outline when viewed face-on) or bilaterally symmetric (two-sided in outline when viewed faced-on)?

    Plant taxonomy
Home Library Science Sci-Tech Encyclopedia The area of study focusing on the development of a classification system, or taxonomy , for plants based on their evolutionary relationships ( phylogeny ). The assumption is that if classification reflects phylogeny, reference to the classification will help researchers focus their work in a more accurate manner. The task is to make phylogeny reconstruction as accurate as possible. The basic unit of classification is generally accepted to be the species, but how a species should be recognized has been intensely debated. See also Plant kingdom Plant phylogeny The earliest classifications of plants were those of the Greek philosophers such as Aristotle (384–322 B.C.) and Theophrastus (372–287 B.C.). The latter is often called the father of botany largely because he listed the names of over 500 species, some of which are still used as scientific names today. In the next 1600 years little progress occurred in plant taxonomy. It was not until the fifteenth century that there was renewed interest in botany, much of which was propelled by the medical use of plants. In 1753 Carolus Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, published his Species Plantarum , a classification of all plants known to Europeans at that time. Linnaeus's system was based on the arrangement and numbers of parts in flowers, and was intended to be used strictly for identification (a system now referred to as an artificial classification as opposed to a natural classification, based on how closely related the species are).

    (Last modified: 20 June 2007)
Plants provide nourishment for our bodies and souls. With the help of protists and fungi , plants provide the oxygen we breathe and the food that sustains us either directly or indirectly, by feeding other animals. Plants provide shade over our heads and cool carpets under our feet while surrounding us with beautiful colors and marking the change of seasons. Prominent plants give us a handle on ecological communities. Descriptions such as "Redwood-Tanoak Forest" or "Oak Grassland" indicate not only the plants we may find there but the animals, fungi, and climate as well. Classification of the plant kingdom can be especially confusing to the amateur naturalist. For example, according to modern botany:
    • A palm tree has more in common with a blade of grass than with other trees.
    • A strawberry plant is more closely related to an apple or apricot tree than to a clover or geranium.
    • A Ginko (Maidenhair) tree is so different from other plants that it is in a phylum by itself. But if you have to group it with other plants, it belongs with conifers such as Pine trees.
At least four classification systems are in common use: Plants are classified into 12 phyla or divisions based largely on reproductive characteristics; they are classified by

An introduction to the principles and practice of flowering plant taxonomy. Emphasis is placed on acquiring the facility to use appropriate terminology in order to identify plants, as well as understanding the historical context and investigative procedures of taxonomists in designing a classification. Of particular importance is gaining an understanding of the philosophical bases in taxonomy and the relevance of this field to other areas of biology. Course
    Objectives:
    • Learn vegetative and reproductive features and terminology that are useful in the identification of flowering plants. Gain ability to use published keys for the identification of flowering plants. Learn to recognize some of the common and unusual families of flowering plants in Maine Understand the principles of plant taxonomy, including evolutionary trends, patterns of speciation, biogeography, and floral biology. Gain an understanding of the relationships between evolutionary mechanisms, evolutionary history, and the classification of organisms. Develop an ability to critically examine the extent to which a classification system reflects relationships between organisms.

    Introduction to Plant Taxonomy
Basic Taxonomy of Flowering Plants Flowering plants, Angiosperms, technically speaking, are divided into two groups, based on the number of seed leaves. Those with paired seed leaves are Dicotyledonous plants, or dicots for short. Monocotyledonous plants have but one seed leaf. Grasses, orchids and sedges are monocots. This article, though lengthy, is but a very short introduction to the taxonomy of dicots and monocots. The basic hierarchy of nomenclature begins with Form, and progresses to Variety, Subspecies, Species, Subgenus, Genus, Subfamily, Family and Order. In the interest of brevity, only Order, Family and Genus will be considered here. There are practical horticultural benefits of knowing familial and ordinal relationships. For example, if Fireblight has killed photinias in your landscape, you should avoid other members of the Family Rosaceae, since all can be affected. If you appreciate the nitrogen-fixing ability of the Legumes in your vegetable garden and want others for your landscape, select from the listing of genera of the Fabaceae, the Legume Family. Aesthetically, if a certain flower form appeals to you, include more members of the same family in your plantings. The Aristolochiaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Passifloraceae and Rutaceae families include caterpillar food sources for some of the most attractive butterflies. Include hardy members of their genera if you want a "butterfly factory" surrounding your house. And finally, you might want to "keep it in the family" and grow an entire bed or border with plants from just one Family.

XVIII INTERNATIONAL BOTANICAL CONGRESS MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, 2011 IOPB - The O R G A N I Z A T I O N The International Organization of Plant Biosystematists was founded in 1960 to promote international cooperation in the study of biosystematics. Traditionally, biosystematics applies methods beyond comparative morphology to analyze taxon boundaries and taxon relationships. Most research covers the range from population biology to the taxonomic levels of genus and family. Besides experimentation with the living plants to determine crossing relationships, character stability or plasticity, and the genetics of character differences, there is an emphasis on cytology for the investigation of ploidy and hybridization, the chemistry of secondary compounds and molecular marker systems from isoenzymes to comparative genomic sequencing.
