Plant Taxonomy: The Systematic Evaluation of Comparative Data
Tod F. Stuessy Share second edition December, 2008
Cloth pages, 60 halftones, 16 color illus., 105 line drawings, 16 tables
      ISBN:
The field of plant taxonomy has transformed rapidly over the past fifteen years, especially with regard to improvements in cladistic analysis and the use of new molecular data. The second edition of this popular resource reflects these far-reaching and dramatic developments with more than 3,000 new references and many new figures. Synthesizing current research and trends, Plant Taxonomy now provides the most up-to-date overview in relation to monographic, biodiversity, and evolutionary studies, and continues to be an essential resource for students and scholars. This text is divided into two parts: Part 1 explains the principles of taxonomy, including the importance of systematics, characters, concepts of categories, and different approaches to biological classification. Part 2 outlines the different types of data used in plant taxonomic studies with suggestions on their efficacy and modes of presentation and evaluation. This section also lists the equipment and financial resources required for gathering each type of data. References throughout the book illuminate the historical development of taxonomic terminology and philosophy while citations offer further study. Plant Taxonomy is also a personal story of what it means to be a practicing taxonomist and to view these activities within a meaningful conceptual framework. Tod F. Stuessy recalls the progression of his own work and shares his belief that the most creative taxonomy is done by those who have a strong conceptual grasp of their own research.

Taxonomy is about grouping things ; plant taxonomy is about grouping plants. The primary goal of a plant taxonomist is to try and summarize the variation in the plant world and express it in a manner that reflects the phylogenetic relationships among the various taxa observed. Let us look at the last sentence in more detail. What do we mean by the variation in the plant world ? The most obvious variation is the morphological variation, in other words, variation in size, shape, and color. But plants also vary in the chemical compounds that they produce (think how different our plant foods taste), their biosynthetic pathways, and reactions to stimuli. There is also variation in how their embryos develop, how they undergo meiosis, how they protect their leaves from sunburn, what triggers flowering, etc., etc., etc. Taxonomists would like to include all aspects of a plant's variation in their considerations but, in practice, most concentrate on a particular set of characters. Those concerned with fieldwork and identification are apt to stress the variation in morphological and ecological characters; those involved in plant breeding will often focus on chromosome numbers, sizes, and shape; those concerned most with phylogeny currently focus on variation in gene sequences. That is because most of the preferred methods of numerical phylogenetic analysis are not well suited to examination of morphological characters.

Plant taxonomy is the science that finds, describes, classifies, identifies, and names plants. It thus is one of the main branches of taxonomy.
Plant taxonomy is closely allied to plant systematics, and there is no sharp boundary between the two. In practice, "plant systematics" is involved with relationships between plants and their evolution, especially at the higher levels, whereas "plant taxonomy" deals with the actual handling of plant specimens. The precise relationship between taxonomy and systematics, however, has changed along with the goals and methods employed. (Wikipedia)

Plant Taxonomy Botanical Garden: Plant Taxonomy:
This section occupies the central part of the Garden. The plots group species of flora according to the Engler taxonomical system, which is based on affinity. Trees and shrubs, perennial and annual plants, cryptogamic and flowering ones are grown here. Among the cryptogamic species the Royal and Ostrich Ferns capture attention. The most interesting gymnosperms are the following conifers: the Swamp Cypress, Mount Atlas Cedar, Japanese Cedar, Mammoth Tree, and the deciduous Maidenhair Tree. Of the monocotyledonous cryptogamic plants the families Liliaceae, Iridaceae and Amarillidaceae, and beautiful grasses, particularly Arudinaria as well as Zebra, Spear and Pampa Grasses, are worthy of notice. The dicotyledonous cryptogams are represented by species of the families Ranunculaceae, Malvaceae, Papaveraceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Compositae, Labiatae and others. The genus Rhododendron is represented in the native flora by a single species, the Pontic Azalea, which flourishes in abundance at the edge of the pond

    NEW! Last Updated: 03/24/2010
    Spring quarter
Faculty plant biology, taxonomy, phytochemistry Major areas of study include plant taxonomy, plant anatomy, field botany, and natural history. Class Standing : Sophomores or above; transfer students welcome. Prerequisites : two quarters of college-level biology or ecology With a name, we can discover what is known about the edible, medicinal, ecological, social, and economic roles of a specific plant or group of plants. Plant taxonomy—the science of naming, describing and identifying plants, is central to a scientific understanding of plants. The process of naming and describing plant taxa also informs our understanding of evolutionary relationships among species and is crucial for documenting and preserving biodiversity. We will explore plant taxonomy, ecology and biology of terrestrial plants through lectures, workshops, labs, fieldwork, seminars, small group projects and an individual research paper. Students will learn how to use standard taxonomic tools—dichotomous keys, microscopes, field journaling and herbaria to deepen their connection with plant communities of the Pacific Northwest. In the field, students will learn to carefully observe and describe plants using a Grinnell-style journal. Lab activities will involve identifying collected specimens to species (when possible) using dichotomous and synoptic keys and other taxonomic literature (e.g.
