The fungi and lichen collections have been totally renovated and a small portion of the plant (primarily monocots) collection has been converted. We are sincerely appreciative of the U.S. taxpayers via the National Science Foundation.
The plant, fungal and lichen databases are available on-line. Funding for this project comes from the U.S. taxpayers via the National Science Foundation and University of Kansas.

    Welcome to World Plant Exchange!
The site was launched May 30, 2005 . As you'll notice there aren't many submissions or members yet, but there will be :)! Please tell your friends about us and help WPE grow! Since WPE is new it is likely that there will be some hidden bugs around the site, but don't be discouraged, they will be fixed and I'd be very grateful if you would report them. Suggestions are welcomed. Thank you :)
    What is World Plant Exchange?
World Plant Exchange is a place where people from all around the world can share plants and seeds of all types and from many locations. At World Plant Exchange you may find hard to find plants and seeds or any other type of plant or seed you may be looking for. If you can't find it you may request it and somebody else may offer them to you. You may also offer plants or seeds to share with other people whether you want anything in return or not.
Are there other seed and plant exchange sites?
There are forums that may have a section or two for trading plants or seeds in a specific state or country, but none of these provide the specially designed tools and features that World Plant Exchange offers and none that I am aware, were designed specifically for trading plants and seeds for people anywhere in the world.

    General Information
What are Carnivorous Plants? Carnivorous plants are the name given to a wide ranging group of plants which only share a single common factor, that is that they all have a method of trapping and digesting living creatures in order to provide a means of nourishment.
How these plants do this varies widely from species to species. Most people think that all Carnivorous plants have traps which shut suddenly on unwary insects. However, the case is that most Carnivorous plants have 'passive' methods of catching their prey, most never move and simply wait for their prey to make a mistake.
Stories of Carnivorous plants being man-eating fiends have also been greatly exaggerated. The majority of Carnivorous plants never grow above a few feet. Even the giant tropical Nepenthes restrict their intake to insects, albeit slightly larger insects.

    74. Barbados Plants: Begonia
    Concise history of the Begonia.
    http://www.barbados.org/plants/begonia.htm
    "Begonia"
One of the most attractive flowers to be seen in many tropical countries is the exotic Begonia. They grow in many shapes, colours and sizes. The common variety which is either white or sugar pink can be seen growing around the base of some of our trees in Barbados, as these plants prefer filtered sunlight. Although it is said that they were first discovered in South America, apparently their name was given by Charles Plumier - a botanist from France who crossed the Atlantic Ocean to visit and study these flowers which grew abundantly in Haiti, (one of our Caribbean islands). The name Begonia was given in honour of Michel Begon, the then governor of that island. There are thousands of different varieties acccompanied by the most splendid leaves. The most popular in Barbados are Begonia Nitida (Minor) or "white cane-stem" and the Begonia Grandis (Evansiana) or "pink hardy Begonia". http://www.generalbiomass.com/smallethanol1.htm
Small Ethanol Plants Smaller ethanol plants built with advanced technology could stimulate the growth and development of cellulosic ethanol in a wide variety of communities with a wider selection of biomass feedstocks. Biomass or cellulosic ethanol plants operate differently from corn ethanol plants. The differences between these two types of ethanol plants have to do with the chemical structure of biomass and its distribution. Biomass is less dense than corn, and most biomass feedstocks yield less glucose per ton than corn grain. These density and compositional differences have an impact on the design and cost of cellulosic ethanol plants. The lower density of biomass means that a greater volume of biomass is needed to make the same volume of ethanol, as compared to corn. For example, a given volume of cellulosic ethanol requires 27 volumes of switchgrass, compared to 3 6 volumes of corn grain. This feedstock volume problem works against the standard engineering assumption of economies of scale, i.e., larger plants require more biomass feedstock which must be transported from longer distances, increasing delivered feedstock costs and the greenhouse gases generated by feedstock transportation. Economies of scale are valid, but must now be balanced against the operating costs of feedstock transportation, feedstock availability at the plant, and overall greenhouse gas balance of the operation. The biomass density problem raises the possibility that smaller ethanol plants may have a role in rural, forest and urban economies. Small plants are a better fit where local biomass feedstocks are limited in quantity. The number of such sites is much greater than the number of sites which could potentially support large bioethanol plants.
