82. Plant Propagation
Demonstrates the basics of plant propagation using stem cuttings.
http://istover.com
Welcome to our little piece of the Internet. These pages are primarily to get you
interested in serious gardening. I'm going to show you the basics of growing your
own landscape plants. Some might say that we are cutting our own business by
teaching propagation techniques. I honestly believe that gardeners that have a
good knowledge about plants make better customers. We hope you enjoy these
pages.
First let me tell you that I'm not selling any of my own products for propagating cuttings on this site. There is a links
page you can go to that has a list of suppliers that I use. Buy their products. For me it's just not worth the hassle of
keeping a bunch of inventory like pots, tools and chemicals. I like growing plants, not selling product. There is a
lot of good information on the Internet that teaches you how to root your own cuttings and create beautiful
landscape plants. I've just added my two cents worth. What I have also discovered is that some of the information I have read from the Internet as well as in numerous gardening books and magazines does not always work for me. What I have learned is that experimenting with different plants, types of rooting media, strength of hormone

Weeping trees We plant trees because we love them. Some trees linger in our memories as old friends, from whose branches we have swung and "skinned-the-cat"; under whose cool shade we have rested from play or work. Some trees seem to have moods, changing from day to day, season to season, and from youth to old age. We plant trees for their beauty of leaf, whether green in Summer or red in the Autumn; for their bark which becomes particularly fascinating in Winter; for the delicate tracery of the branches which frame our view of the eternal blue or star-scattered heavens; for their flowers which seem like giant nosegays.

86. Winemaking: Making Wines From Wild Plants
How to make homemade wines from edible wild plants.
http://winemaking.jackkeller.net/plants.asp
WINEMAKING
Making Wines from Wild Plants
The one thing I learned from Euell Gibbons' love affair with nature is
that every day there's something to harvest in the wild for my crock.
Jack Keller
In Stalking the Good Life , the late naturalist Euell Gibbons wrote about wild berries. "Actually," he wrote, "I begin picking berries about the time the last spring snow melts away." He then describes in one chapter a succession of harvests of wild wintergreen berries (teaberries), strawberries, red raspberries, black raspberries, wineberries, dewberries, blackberries, blueberries, huckleberries, squaw huckleberries (deerberries), and elderberries. Elsewhere in the book he describes harvests of wild barberries, black haws, cherries, chokecherries, cranberries, grapes, juneberries, wild raisins, squashberries, shadbush berries, serviceberries, sarvisberries, sugar pears, and sugar plums. These are just some of the berries but a sampling of what is out there growing in the wild and available to be harvested and turned into wine. No matter where you live in the world, you live but a short walk or drive away from more edible wild plants than you probably ever imagined. Ancient man was successful as a species because he was capable of eating a very large variety of plants and animals. Many plants bear fruit or other components that can be made into wine suitable for just about any palate. On the pages that follow, I will be describing but a few of the thousands of wild edible plants in the United States and Canada which are suitable in one way or another for winemaking. Readers living outside this geographic area should not turn away. Many of the plants featured herein have relatives scattered all over the globe, and I have consistently tried to identify the genus (and species) of each plant featured so that distant relatives can be identified and recipes adapted to suit them. See "Adapting Recipes," below, for tips on how to do this.

Year 1: Tiny seedlings emerge, their first two leaves are very small green petioles that will push the plant out of the seed and into the growing medium. Next tiny trap leaves will appear, fully functional despite their size of 1-2mm. The entire plant will rarely get larger than a penny the first year.
Year 2: After the first dormancy the tiny plants will perform pretty much just like their larger relatives. Traps will reach up to 3/8 of an inch, and the plant will grow to an inch or so across.
Year 3: Getting larger still with traps up to 1/2", now capable of catching something larger than a soil gnat. Third year plants will get to be a couple inches tall, and some more robust plants may even flower.

Plants add the needed finishing touches to any decor. But, if you have a feline, that beautiful plant could become a deadly enemy. Listed here are plants poisonous to cats that must be avoided if there are cats in your home. Note that lilies(*), in particular, are dangerous to cats. While in some cases, just parts of a plant (bark, leaves, seeds, berries, roots, tubers, spouts, green shells) might be poisonous, this list rules out the whole plant. If you must have any of them, keep them safely out of reach. Should your feline friend eat part of a poisonous plant, rush the cat to your veterinarian as soon as possible. If you can, take the plant with you for ease of identification.

Plants of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic Eras
Many of the plants that lived during the age of the dinosaurs, the Mesozoic Era, which includes the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods, are alive today and are scattered about the globe. They could be used to create a dinosaur garden or park that would give you great pleasure, add beauty to your community, and help re-establish living fossil plants.
Other plants of interest include the Sequoia giganteum (Giant Sequoia), Santa Lucia Fir, Torry Pine, Bristlecone Pine, Atlas Cedar, Monterey Cypress, Metasequoia Glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood), mid Triassic Sciadopitys verticillata Japanese Umbrella Pine Magnolia Grandiflora (Southern Magnolia), Palms, and many others.
Many living fossil plants live in sub-tropical and warm temperate climates. The Gingko Biloba lives in a cold climatic zone where the temperature drops to - 20 degree Centigrade. It may also be able to tolerate much colder temperatures. The temperature tolerances are indicative of the climate conditions when the plants evolved.
