Daffodils aren't eaten by squirrel pests for a very good reason: they're toxic. David Beaulieu More Images zSB(3,3) Many plants poisonous to dogs are very common in back yards. Plants poisonous to dogs range from being only mildly toxic (e.g., causing vomiting) to being responsible for more serious canine health problems. If you wish to err on the safe side, thoroughly research any vegetation, berries, etc. to which your canine friend has access. In some cases of plants poisonous to dogs, only a particular part of the life form in question will be toxic i.e., the seed, leaves, etc. But it is beyond the scope of this article to delve into those details. I'm a landscaping enthusiast, not a toxicologist, so further questions should be addressed to those more expert in the field than I. Nor is the listing of plants poisonous to dogs that follows intended in any way to be complete. Rather, it is a sampling of the lists of plants poisonous to dogs provided by such organizations as the ASPCA and the Humane Society; consider the list as a springboard to further research. I have organized this sampling of plants poisonous to dogs according to type (vines, shrubs, etc.), as an indication of the potential scope of the problem.

Vegetation helps sustain life. We eat many plants, herbs and so forth in our daily diet. But, we must remember to be choosy. Some plants, trees or shrubs are potential killers of man. Some part of the ornamental plants or flowers in your yard may contain deadly poison. Many poisonous plants are so common and seemingly innocuous you do not suspect their toxic qualities. For example, who would expect that the beautiful oleander bush-grown indoors and outdoors all over the country-contains a deadly heart stimulant, similar to the drug digitalis? It is easy to be deceived by plants...one part may be edible while another is poisonous. The following chart lists some of the more common poisonous plants. PLANT TOXIC PART SYMPTOMS HOUSE PLANTS Hyacinth, Narcissus, Daffodil Bulbs Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. May be fatal. Oleander Leaves, branches Extremely poisonous. Some Plants Are Poisonous
by B. Rosie Lerner, Extension Consumer Horticulture Specialist Most plants in our environment offer many benefits, including beauty, privacy, food, fragrance and medicine. But there are a few plants out there that can prove harmful when inappropriately used or accidentally eaten or touched. Gardeners, particularly those with young children and pets, should familiarize themselves with these potential foes. Numerous reference books have been written on the subject of toxic plants, including some that have excellent illustrations and/or photographs. However, there may be some conflicting information from one author to another. Stick with books that cite references so that you'll know the information is based on actual data. The toxicity of a given plant can vary depending on the plant part, location and time of year, as well as with the victim. Certainly, body weight has a role; generally, the smaller the body, the less of the toxin needed to cause ill effects. This is one reason why children are so vulnerable. An individual's metabolism also may play a role. Don't assume that because a wild animal or bird ate something without becoming sick that it is not poisonous. Different species and even different individuals within a species can react quite differently. Cattle may be killed after eating a particular plant, yet pigs might not show any symptoms at all. Humans might be affected by certain plants, yet dogs or cats may be immune. Poison ivy is a good example of how cats and dogs can run harmlessly through a patch of vines, but people may suffer blistering and itching if their skin comes in contact with the plant's sap.
