    Poison Oak
    Can You Identify the Plant?
One of these plants has delicious berries under its leaves - the other will give you poison oak. When there's no berries on the plant, is it poison oak, or is it not? If you can't tell the difference, "Leaves of three, let it be; berries white, poisonous sight." You may notice however that a typical berry plant with edible berries will grow on plants with leaves of three. To make matters more confusing, sometimes poison oak has five leaves. There are however a few characteristics of poison oak and poison ivy that separate them from the plants that grow edible berries. Firstly, most berries grow with the protection of thorns - poison oak does not. And depending on the season, poison oak and and poison ivy will have a shine to their red or green leaves. Also keep in mind that not all berries are edible.

The first symptom of poisoning is a severe itching of the skin. Later, a red inflammation and a blistering of the skin occurs. In severe cases, oozing sores develop. The rash spreads by the poisonous sap (urushiol), not as the result of contamination from sores. The blood vessels develop gaps that leak fluid through the skin, causing blisters and oozing. When you cool the skin, the vessels constrict and don't leak as much according to Robert Rietschel, M.D. Chairman of Dermatolgy at New Orleans' Ochsner Clinic. symptoms Viewer Rashes rash pictures

Mammals including humans, dogs and cats, all alike need many different nutrients that are present in the green plants, especially leaves. Sometimes you might notice your cat or dog chewing on the leaves of some or the other plant. Mammals like cats chew on these plants in order to consume some important nutrient such as fiber, vitamins, etc. The feline family has a habit of chewing on the leaves of plants that are kept indoors. Many a times the chemical insecticides and other pesticides that are sprayed on the plants also tend to be toxic to cats. Many cat owners have discovered indoor and outdoor plants that are not poisonous to cats, having fatal effects on cats due to the pesticides and insecticides. One of the best solutions to keep the cats away from these plants is to spray some diluted lemon juice on the plants, as most of the cats hate the smell and taste of the lemon juice. Plants Toxic to Horses and Ponies - Deadly Nightshade
Plants Toxic to Horses and Ponies - Deadly Nightshade
2007 K. Blocksdorf Deadly nightshade likes sandy soil and thrives even in dry conditions. I've become very familiar with this plant's vining habits on my own property. It has a white star shaped flower and the fruit looks like a large black current. All parts of this plant are toxic to humans and pets. The leaves are dark green and smooth textured somewhat similar to that of a tomato plant. (It is in the same family as tomato, potato and pepper plants which is why you don't want your neighbor pitching his garden scraps over your fence.) Nightshades can be difficult to eradicate. Horses are unlikely to eat nightshade or any other toxic plant unless there is no other feed available or it is baled into the hay and eaten accidentally. Signs of nightshade poisoning may include:
    • colic like symptoms
    • loss of muscle control
    • disorientation
    • dilated pupils
    • death
Also known as Eastern Black Nightshade.

Poisonous Plants for Rabbits Download a formatted PDF version of this page here by Cindy Fisher How to use this list:
Many plants listed here are not all poisonous, only parts of them are. Apple is a good example: the seeds are poisonous, but the fruit is perfectly fine for rabbits. Read the complete listing of the plant to get details regarding which parts to avoid. If no parts are listed, assume that the whole plant is poisonous and should not be in reach of your rabbit. Use common sense when it comes to your rabbit's well being; it is better to be safe than sorry. Resources used were House Rabbit Journal, The San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society, and a posting of poisonous plants made available to America OnLine. Special thanks to Ellen Welch who searched persistently through her rabbit resources to obtain this list for us.
