Acaena magellanica Photo : P Turner A vascular plant is one which has a system of vessels which transport water and nutrients between different parts of the plant (e.g. from the roots to the leaves). At Heard Island and McDonald Islands (HIMI), there are no trees or ferns and the most advanced vascular plants are low-growing herbaceous flowering plants. Twelve vascular species are known from Heard Island, of which five have also been recorded on McDonald Island. A single specimen of one of these species, Leptinella plumosa , was recorded for the first time during the 2003/04 Australian Antarctic program expedition to Heard Island. The vascular vegetation covers a wide range of environments and, although only six species are currently widespread, glacial retreat and the consequent connection of previously separate ice-free areas is providing opportunities for further distribution of vegetation into adjacent areas. None of the vascular species is endemic to the HIMI.

Vascular Plants
Vascular -From the Latin vasculum meaning a vessel or duct Vascular plants first appear in the fossil record during the mid-Silurian period, about 410 million years ago. Rhyniophyta is the earliest known division of these plants, represented by several genera. Figure 1 Rhynia , the first known plant with a complete fossil. Rhynia (Fig. 1) is the first known vascular plant for which a complete fossil has been found. These leafless and rootless plants consisted of stem tissue which branched along an axis and contained spore cases at the tips of the aerial branches. Although true roots developed much later, a primitive "pipeline" system for support and fluid transport was an important development for these plants. The pipelinesystem, consisiting of ineterconnected strands of specialized cells, allowed transport of water, nutrients, and metabolites throughout the plant. This tissue was separated into two types, xylem and phloem. Xylem is specialized hollow cells which move water and dissolved minerals up from the roots to the rest of the plant. Xylem also provides support via the lignin which is incorporated into the cell walls, making the plant rigid. Phloem transports carbohydrates and other metabolites from the leaves to other parts of the plant. Unlike most nonvascular plants, vascular plants have a dominant, conspicuous sporophytic generation which is nutritionally independent. This generation is the familiar organism we see when we look at trees or wildflowers. The gametophytic generation is small and incorporated into the sporophytic generation in angiosperms, although it may be independent in some vascular plants.

Primitive Plants: Mosses, Ferns, and Allies
Plants are multicellular eukaryotes. Nearly all are photosynthetic, and most are terrestrial (some are secondarily aquatic). Plants contain a variety of cell types that are specialized to perform different functions: the aerial parts generally have a waxy cuticle to prevent water loss, but the roots don’t so they can absorb water. The photosynthetic pigments include chlorophylls A and B plus various carotenoids. Plant cells have cell walls which are made of cellulose. Plants grow by mitosis, and reproduce by meiosis and alternation of generations with special adaptations of the gametes and embryos to survive in a non-aquatic environment. The gametes are produced in gametangia . The male gametangium is called an antheridium anthe = flower), while the female gametangium is an archegonium arche = first, beginning; goni = seed). The eggs are fertilized within the female archegonium to reduce desiccation, and often stay within the archegonium to continue their development. In all plant groups except Division Bryophyta, the 2n sporophyte is the dominant generation. The various Divisions (remember botanists use Division = Phylum) of plants are classified based on presence/absence of a vascular system and/or seeds. If seeds are present, the location of the seeds (whether on the surface of a reproductive structure or within some type of ovary) becomes significant.

    Evolution and Classification
The organisms we call plants are assigned to a single clade ; that is, a natural grouping based on the belief that they have all evolved from a common ancestor more recent than any shared with other organisms. Among the criteria for doing this are:
    Green Algae (Division Chlorophyta)
The ancestors of these organisms were the most primitive members of the clade. In other words, organisms that we would put in this division were probably the ancestors of all the other plants. There are some 7000 species living today. They include:
    • microscopic, unicellular forms like Chlamydomonas View
    • colonial forms like the filamentous Spirogyra
    • multicellular forms like Volvox View ] and Ulva , the sea lettuce.

Order Isoetales
Quillworts
The quillworts are considered by some botanists to be the last remnant of the fossil tree lycopods because of their peculiar secondary growth, heterospory and presence of ligules. Description: The sporophyte has an enlarged perennial underground stem, known as the corm. Roots are dichotomously branched and the annual strap shaped leaves grown in a spiral. Leaves have ligules, vertical air chambers and megasporangia or microsporangi, depending on their position on the plant.
