All requests for a life must be made through the blog You just found: A BIG MESS 10 years ago I threw some flower photos and a brief reference for them together to use as a quick reminder. Not that my memory was bad but because I couldn't remember. Some of the photos are even decent. Garden Perennials Wildflowers Mushrooms of Northern NY Of course I couldn't help but to add more photos and shove them on you like a grandma with pics of the grandkid's baby photos. Gardens or Landscapes And even my view of Winter And now I'm adding even more photos. The Mushroom section is growing quickly. It's only a photo gallery and while I've identified most of the mushrooms not all are known. But if you're looking for a cool background for your desktop you should check it out. Putting a website together was a pass-time and you'll notice I've passed a considerable amount of it away. A very large part of that was editing images. So take one guess where the

Wild flowers that were once common in farm crops are now far less frequently seen
Wild Flowers
Wild flowers of wheatfields
Wild plants that were once widespread amongst farm crops are now extremely rare and some species, including interrupted brome ( Bromus interruptus ), have become extinct in the wild. Numbers of other plants such as field buttercup ( Ranunculus arvensis ) and cornflower ( Centaurea cyanus ) have dropped more quickly than any other species in the British flora. This loss of wild flowers is linked to a revolution in farming practices during the last few decades. Horses have been replaced by machinery, crop rotations have changed, many cereals are now sown in the autumn rather than in spring, new crop varieties and fertilisers have increased yields dramatically and herbicides and pesticides have created cleaner, more sterile environments. These changes caused huge improvements in crop production efficiency, but at the expense of the plants and animals that rely on the agricultural environment for their existence. Many farmers and conservationists are now working towards a balance between controlling weeds to minimise crop losses, and maintaining ecological biodiversity. One way of doing this is to have field margins that are managed for wildlife and so treated with fewer chemicals than the rest of the field. As well as encouraging wild flowers, these areas also provide nesting sites for birds, and food and shelter for butterflies, beetles, grasshoppers and other insects.

A Guide for Landscape Architects, Biologists, Gardeners, Developers, and Others who are Involved in Landscaping Richmond Native plants can play an important role in gardens and landscaped areas. Because they are adapted to local conditions, native plants are often more drought-tolerant, easier to care for, and have greater disease resistance than many traditional garden plants. People who grow these plants have the satisfaction of knowing that they are preserving local heritage, being water-wise, and are improving the biodiversity of their communities. Native wildflowers can be an attractive way to add native plants to a home garden. Many also provide food for birds, butterflies and several species of beneficial insects. Several eye-catching perennial wildflowers are shown here. All of the plants listed here are known to be native to Richmond, but are becoming increasingly scarce due to changes in the landscape and the presence of introduced plants and weeds. Douglas Aster (Aster subspicatus)
Likes moist growing conditions in open areas such as meadows, clearings and along streambanks. Attracts butterflies. Blooms August to September.

Blue Gentian Wildflowers found in St. Lawrence County, northern New York. The majority of those wildflowers are easily found in the Town of Canton. I've only listed the few when I've had a camera with me when I found them. Without a field guide in my pocket I'm pretty dependent on a good photo so I can later identify the suspect. I'm usually out trapping wild rocks to domesticate but I've also brought back to the garden many of the willdflowers I've found on my or friends property. Remember it is probably illegal to dig up something you find in the wild even if it's on the right-of-way of a road. There are property rights to remember and there are restrictions / protections for some plants such as Trillium and Lady Slippers. And not least of all is the fact that many are specific about their growing conditions. Transplanting some wildflowers is a death sentence for them. Either they can't take the shock or can't adapt to where they're moved to. If you do transplant any I suggest removing enough soil so the root system really doesn't know it's been disturbed. It might be heavier and harder but there will be little transplant shock and you will be bringing home a good amount of the plants 'native' soil.

HOLLYHOCK (ALTHEA ROSEA)
Buy cottage garden plants, wildflowers, herbs, seeds and native hedging in our online shop Biennial. Traditional cottage garden plant, originally hailing from China. Closely related to the Marshmallow. Indeed, the Anglo-Saxon word for Mallow was "hoc". Tall, stately spikes of densely-petalled, single flowers. Grows 5 - 9 ft (1.5 - 2.7 m) high. Flowers May to October. Its name comes from the Greek "alkaia", meaning Mallow. It is possible its name is also a corruption of "holy" - the plant was alleged to have been brought back here with the Crusades. It may also have been called Hock Leaf because it was used to reduce the swelling in horses' hocks. The Hollyhock is a very old plant. The grave of a 50,000 year old Neanderthal man was found to contain the remains of Hollyhocks. Hollyhock buds were used in a recipe of 1660, with Marigolds, Wild Thyme and young Hazel buds to enable one to see fairies. Children used to make Hollyhock dolls from the flowers. The seeds have been called "cheeses" because the pod is shaped like a wheel of cheese. Butterfly plant and also a good bee plant. Food plant of caterpillars of the Mallow moth. Hollyhock flowers are often used in Chinese recipes. In Tudor times, dried Hollyhock roots were added to wine in the belief that drinking it would help prevent miscarriages and blood clots. Leaves were cooked and eaten as greens.

Wildflowers and prairie grasses possess a stature and strength that provide a glimpse of the past and open a door to our future. The tallest of plants may be seen waving boldly as gentle breezes stir their tops while the shorter species provide even more cover and beauty in a natural setting. It is both simple and rewarding to create an environment that is colorful, multi-dimensional and beneficial to the world around us. When planting wildflowers and/or prairie grasses you are inviting habitat for wildlife, butterflies and birds. You can create a beautiful easy to maintain landscape that will return to delight you year after year. Many wildflowers prefer low fertility or are tolerant to droughts, so there is less stress than some other types of gardening. By planting wildflowers and/or prairie grasses you will be preserving our natural heritage and will bring the best of nature into your lifestyle.
