About Grow Native!
"Biological diversity is the key to the maintenance of the world as we know it."
~ E.O. Wilson, Biodiversity A joint program of the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Agriculture (MDA), the Grow Native! program helps protect and restore our state's biodiversity by increasing conservation awareness of native plants and their effective use. By building partnerships among private industry, non-profit organizations, government agencies and landowners, Grow Native! aims to significantly increase the demand for and use of native plants on all landscapes. Within the Grow Native! partnership, MDC provides individuals, organizations, schools and government agencies with information, education and training materials that help them discover and use native plants. MDA houses Grow Native's marketing and business development services for member businesses that supply native plants, seeds and related services such as design, installation and maintenance. Together, MDC's and MDA's efforts make it easy for everyone to discover, buy and successfully use Missouri source native plants on any landscape.

Sarracenia or pitcher plants, are carnivorous plants and native plants to the USA, where they are some of the loveliest wildflowers.
http://www.pitcherplant.com/sarracen.html
Sarracenia -North American Pitcher Plants Sarracenia are usually the focus of a hardy carnivorous planting. They are a natural for water's edge or in a bog garden. We recommend mulching where temperatures drop below zero (zone 6-7). North of zone 6 plants must be given protection to prevent sudden, prolonged, deep freezing. Sarracenia need at least six hours of direct sun during spring and summer for best growth. Ca re and planting information Species S. alata the Pale Pitcher Plant. Very slender, tall pitchers reaching 26 inches or more. Leaves are yellow green with red veining or zones. Blossoms are pale yellow and essentially unscented. This species requires full sun with no shade. Best leaf production is in the late-summer/fall ( photos of Texan and Black-red form ). The Black-red form has pitchers that reach 30 inches or more. The pitchers get their best dark color in late summer and need a peat moss,(tannic), soil mix. S. flava the Yellow Pitcher Plant. Tall funnels with a wide variety of color variants ( photo ). Flowers are large, yellow and have a boxwood-like odor. Quite hardy and showy. Spring pitcher production is the strongest.

34. Dons English Wildflowers, Including The Livens Collection Of Pressed Wildflowers
Hobby wildflower photographer shares some of his pictures of flowers growing in South Derbyshire. Also a few reproductions of pressed English wildflowers from 1857.
http://www.dagood.co.uk
My collection of wildflowers is mainly from the South Derbyshire area around my local town of Swadlincote. The area is part of the new National Forest with a lot recently planted woodland most of which is open to the public. I use a Nikon digital camera for the photos which works well except for some problems with focus and seeing the display in strong sunlight
A great Hobby
There is no way better of spending a warm afternoon in spring than walking in the countryside looking for new flowers to photograph. It combines exercise with interest and fresh air. Derbyshire Wildflower Photographs
The Livens Collection
The Livens Collection is a collection of pressed wildflowers from Leicestershire gathered in 1857 by Mr Frederick Livens who was a commercial traveller in the sugar trade living in Leicester. It is bound in a single volume which was purchased by his wife Mary Livens for their 10th wedding anniversary in 1861.Mary Livens wrote a charming poem to her husband in the front of the book and all he flowers are given their english and scientific names. The locations at which the flowers were found are also given in some cases with well known places in Leicestershire such as Newtown Linford, Beacon Hill and Martinshaw Wood being mentioned The complete collection including a letter from Leicester Museum Biology Department who commented that it was among the earliest known such collections from Leicestershire and notes about the Livens family of that time and much more can be seen at the following link.

Return of the Bees [General] Prenanthes
P. trifoliata
from the basal leaf shapes P. altissima
The flowers are not particularly spectacular even at their prime, which these are just past, but they certainly are interesting to these little friends.
late October-early November 2008
. At that time they were all over bushy asters, late purple asters, and goldentop.
Quite a queue of little bees awaiting their turn at what seems to have been targetted as a rich source.

Blue [General] We have a couple of other blues still in flower - late purple aster Symphyotrichum patens , and some downy lobelias Lobelia puberula , are still hanging on down to the creek.
But those are warmer early autumn plants and are on their way out. Our only gentian, soapwort or harvest gentian, Gentiana saponaria , is just coming into flower. It likes it cold, and seems to wait until about the time of the first frost.
