From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory for plasma physics and nuclear fusion science located on Princeton University 's Forrestal Campus in Plainsboro Township, New Jersey . Its primary mission is research into and development of fusion as an energy source. It grew out of the top secret Cold War project to control thermonuclear reactions, called Project Matterhorn. In 1961, after declassification, Project Matterhorn was renamed the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

PPPL’s Gentile Receives Columbus Award Charles A. Gentile, a researcher at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL), is a recipient of the 2010 Homeland Security Award sponsored by the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and AgustaWestland North America. Gentile was among four honored during an October 5 ceremony at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., for their "cutting edge technology in the diverse arena of homeland security." Gentile received the $25,000 award in the field of Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Chemical and Explosive Attacks for his work in the development of the Miniature Integrated Nuclear Detection System (MINDS), which can rapidly identify radioactive materials that could be used in a radiological dispersion device commonly known as a dirty bomb. Essential Facts and Formulae
Notes: The content of this site derives largely from my own research and concentrates on fundamental topics and formulas that are needed for understanding and solving corresponding theoretical and practical problems. It does not claim to be comprehensive with regard to special aspects of plasma- or atomic physics. In some cases the approach differs from corresponding treatments in standard textbooks where the latter can be shown to be flawed. It is indicated in the corresponding entry when this is the case.

Absorption: Light can be absorbed by Photoionization Ion for this process is independent of the intensity of the radiation. However, for intensities below a certain threshold it is obvious that it will be reduced due to the disturbing influence of Plasma Field Fluctuations . One can adopt the efficiency factor w )= E w /(E w p where E w is the electric field strength of the radiation with frequency (as given by the intensity I= E w p p ,e ,I ) the effective plasma fluctuation field (see Plasma Field Fluctuations and Stark Broadening with T n This leads to the circumstance that the Optical Depth with regard to photoionization is not proportional to the column density any more but has to be determined through the integral

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search For other uses, see Plasma Plasma lamp , illustrating some of the more complex phenomena of a plasma, including filamentation . The colors are a result of relaxation of electrons in excited states to lower energy states after they have recombined with ions. These processes emit light in a spectrum characteristic of the gas being excited. In physics and chemistry plasma is a state of matter similar to gas in which a certain portion of the particles are ionized . The basic premise is that heating a gas dissociates its molecular bonds , rendering it into its constituent atoms . Further heating leads to ionization (a loss of electrons ), turning it into a plasma: containing charged particles, positive ions and negative electrons. The presence of a non-negligible number of charge carriers makes the plasma electrically conductive so that it responds strongly to electromagnetic fields . Plasma, therefore, has properties quite unlike those of solids liquids , or gases and is considered to be a distinct state of matter . Like gas, plasma does not have a definite shape or a definite volume unless enclosed in a container; unlike gas, under the influence of a magnetic field, it may form structures such as filaments, beams and double layers. Some common plasmas are stars and

Tag this article Article References Full text PDF (933 KB) An approach is developed to the problem of the electrical conductivity of nondegenerate, highly ionized, nonideal plasma. A linear response theory is used in computations. The electron trajectories required for the computation are obtained by a molecular dynamics method. The difference between the real electron trajectory from the classical one is taken into account by changing the electron-ion interaction potential at small distances. Additionally, a correction factor is introduced into the expression which should be averaged. The trajectories are computed for a set of initial configurations of electrons and ions obtained by the Monte-Carlo method, and the results are averaged. An electrical conductivity computation has been performed at Debye numbers from 0.5 to 0.05.

Non-neutral plasma crystal formation
Understanding the complex behavior of confined plasmas has led researchers to formulate the fundamental equations of plasma physics. This foundational work and understanding of plasmas has led to important advances in fields as diverse as computers, lighting, waste handling, space physics, switches and relays, and lasers. Sites Worldwide Tutorials
Plasma science has, in turn, spawned new avenues of basic science. Most notably, plasma physicists were among the first to open up and develop the new and profound science of chaos and nonlinear dynamics. Plasma physicists have also contributed greatly to studies of turbulence, important for safe air travel and other applications. Basic plasma science continues to be a vibrant research area. Recent new discoveries have occurred in understanding extremely cold plasmas which condense to crystalline states, the study of high-intensity laser interactions, new highly-efficient lighting systems, and plasma-surface interactions important for computer manufacturing.
Because plasmas are conductive and respond to electric and magnetic fields and can be efficient sources of radiation, they are used in a large number of applications where such control is needed or when special sources of energy or radiation are required. The
