Plasma Physics
Plasma physics is concerned with the studies of hot, diffuse gases, where the electrons are dissociated from the atomic nuclei. These plasmas can range in temperature from several thousands to several hundred millions of degrees. Lightning is a natural example

Fusion is a process that combines the atomic nuclei of light elements, like the isotopes of hydrogen called deuterium and tritium, to form heavier elements. It is the same process by which the sun creates energy. In the process of fusing these elements, energy is released which can be captured and used to generate heat and eventually electricity. Auburn faculty and students are actively engaged in experimental, theoretical and computational fusion energy research. Basic Plasma Physics
Basic plasma physics research focuses on fundamental process that occur in plasma - such as wave propagation, particle and energy transport, and plasma instabilities. These studies also include the development of new experimental and computational techniques for studying plasmas. Ongoing experiments at Auburn includes investigations of magnetic reconnection, Alfvйn waves, dusty plasmas, and plasma rotation.

    Plasma technology has become one of the major and important technologies in the development of materials. In the late 1980's, the Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPL) of the National Institute of Physics in U.P. Diliman was established by Dr. Henry Ramos to experiment with and develop modest plasma systems in order to acquire practical knowledge and skills to better employ technologies based on plasma physics. With grants extended by various agencies like the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Office of Research Coordination of the University of the Philippines (ORC-UP), the Engineering and Science Education Program of the Department of Science and Technology (ESEP-DOST), the DOST-Grants-in-Aid, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the PPL has built some major plasma devices over the years. plasma@nip.upd.edu.ph Plasma Physics Laboratory

    These facilities have undergone modifications and upgrading to serve as demonstration-of-principle devices for specific applications. For example, the PSTNIS facility has been designed as a source of ions for ion implantation applications. It has been utilized as well for the synthesis of nitrides (TiN, ZrN) on metal substrates. On the other hand, the SPNIS facility has also been used for the formation of TiN on metal substrates. Diamond and diamond-like-carbon (DLC) films on silicon have been deposited using the PECVD device. Various studies have been done on these facilities leading to several publications and conference papers.

Each type a gas makes a different color. Plasma has been called the fourth state of matter . The other states are solids, liquids, and gases. Over 99% of the universe is believed to be plasma. When the atoms in a gas are broken up, the pieces are called electrons and ions . Because these pieces have an electric charge , they are pulled together or pushed apart by electric fields and magnetic fields . This makes a plasma act different from a gas. For example, magnetic fields can be used to hold a plasma, but not to hold a gas. Plasma is a better conductor of electricity than copper. Plasma is usually very hot, because it takes very high temperatures to break the bonds between electrons and the nuclei of the atoms. Sometimes plasmas can have very high pressure , like in stars . Stars (including our own Sun ) are mostly made of plasma. Plasmas can also have very low pressure, like in outer space On Earth, natural plasma makes fire

      Maryland Space Plasma Physics Group
      The research activity of the Space and Plasma Physics (SPP) group focuses on space plasmas, ranging from high altitude lightning to shocks in supernovae, and laboratory plasmas, ranging from semiconductors to laboratory devices. Our major effort is solar-terrestrial physics sponsored by NASA, NSF, AFOSR and ONR. The main objective of the research is to determine the cause-effect relationship of the interaction between the Sun and near-Earth plasma, and to develop the capability to predict the state of the geospace environment. The SPP group emphasizes interdisciplinary research in areas involving important collective phenomena. Other areas of research are the magnetospheres and ionospheres of other planets and comets, and solar radio bursts. Current Research:
      Current Research
      Global MHD Simulations of the Magnetosphere
      Numerical modeling is crucial to the understanding of space plasmas, and a range of different simulation codes are needed to model different phenomena. The dynamics of the magnetosphere in full three dimensions is carried out using a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model, a state of the art global scale code that utilizes the computing power of modern supercomputers. This code can simulate the magnetospheric conditions from spacecraft measurements and thus provide a comprehensive picture of the response to the solar wind variations. Such codes are the natural choice as the backbone of a Geospace General Circulation Model for forecasting space weather. Other codes include hybrid particle codes which incorporate both the particle and fluid aspects of plasmas and are used to model shocks and discontinuities in nature. This approach has elucidated the basic nature of collisionless shocks, and are important for understanding thin plasma boundaries such as the magnetopause.
