The Basic Plasma Science Facility performs frontier-level research of the plasma state of matter. Usage of the facility is available to qualified scientists from national and international institutions, and industry. Research on the fundamental properties of plasmas aids our understanding of applications ranging from fusion energy to space science. The Basic Plasma Science Facility commenced in August of 2001. It is a user facility operated at the University of California, Los Angeles. The core of the facility is a modern, large plasma device (the LAPD) constructed by Walter Gekelman (the facility director) and his staff of reserch scientists and technicians. The first plasma was achieved in July, 2001 and the machine is now in operation.

    Plasma Physics
The Plasma Physics Group (P-24) are an organization committed to scientific excellence, with great breadth and depth in experimental High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) and Plasma Physics, applied towards solving scientific and technical problems of importance to the nation and to the world. In particular, we apply an extensive knowledge of plasma, atomic and laser-matter interaction physics, plasma chemistry, laser and pulsed-power technology and complex diagnostics to study matter under extreme conditions, in states ranging from the plasma state to condensed matter. We concentrate on fielding and interpreting the results from laboratory-based experiments, at laser and pulsed-power experimental facilities, both within group and with other organizations at other national laboratories. P-24 is involved in many research programs, such as inertial and magnetic fusion, nuclear weapons, conventional defense, homeland defense, and civilian applications of plasma technologies. The group operates the TRIDENT High-Energy Density Facility, consisting of a 200-TW multi-beam laser system and associated experimental areas, the Field-Reversed Experiment – Liner (FRX-L), the Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) experiment, low-temperature plasma laboratory, the Reconnection Scaling Experiment (RSX), and support laboratories such as x-ray calibration and darkroom facilities.

  • in development as a discipline in plasma (state of matter): The development of plasma physics The modern concept of the plasma state is of recent origin, dating back only to the early 1950s. Its history is interwoven with many disciplines. Three basic fields of study made unique early contributions to the development of plasma physics as a discipline: electric discharges, magnetohydrodynamics (in which a conducting fluid such as mercury is studied), and kinetic theory.

Welcome to Fusion Plasma Physics
We focus on controlled thermonuclear research, leading to a potentially clean and economically viable future energy source. The division also has a long standing tradition of research on basic plasma physics, initiated by Prof. Bo Lehnert. In house we have a major fusion experiment, the EXTRAP T2R reversed-field pinch, where most of the experimental research is performed. On this site you find information about fusion power in general and about current activities in Swedish and international fusion research. Students will find information about courses in fusion and plasma physics and suggestions for thesis work. The Swedish fusion research is part of the European research effort involving the fusion research centres of the European Union and Switzerland. It is coordinated and partly funded by Euratom.

Plasma Physics Jobs
Careers in Plasma Physics
There are many career opportunities in engineering and physics for individuals knowledgeable about plasmas. Artificially produced plasmas are found in plasma displays for TVs and computers, inside fluorescent lamps and neon signs, and the area in front of a spacecraft's heat shield during reentry into the atmosphere. A plasma is a partially ionized gas in which a certain proportion of electrons are free rather than being bound to an atom or molecule. The ability of the positive and negative charges to move somewhat independently makes the plasma electrically conductive. A plasma has such different properties than a solid, liquid, or gas it is considered a distinct state of matter. There are job opportunities for plasma experts at the Joint European Torus, the largest man made magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment currently in operation. Another major project is the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. These research/engineering projects have the goal of producing fusion power to replace fission and coal power generators. Careers based on knowledge of plasmas exist in the fabrication of semiconductor devices. Reactive ion etching (RIE) uses chemically reactive plasma to remove material deposited on wafers for micromanufacturing. Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and sputtering are similar manufacturing procedures. Plasmas were first discovered inside a Crookes tube and reminded some people of blood. Terrestrial plasmas include fire and lightning and stars consist of plasmas.
