Plate Tectonics : The Mechanism The main features of plate tectonics are:
  • The Earth's surface is covered by a series of crustal plates. The ocean floors are continually moving, spreading from the center, sinking at the edges, and being regenerated. Convection currents beneath the plates move the crustal plates in different directions. The source of heat driving the convection currents is radioactivity deep in the Earths mantle.
Advances in sonic depth recording during World War II and the subsequent development of the nuclear resonance type magnometer (proton-precession magnometer) led to detailed mapping of the ocean floor and with it came many observation that led scientists like Howard Hess and R. Deitz to revive Holmes' convection theory . Hess and Deitz modified the theory considerably and called the new theory "Sea-floor Spreading". Among the seafloor features that supported the sea-floor spreading hypothesis were: mid-oceanic ridges, deep sea trenches, island arcs, geomagnetic patterns, and fault patterns. Mid-Oceanic Ridges
The mid-oceanic ridges rise 3000 meters from the ocean floor and are more than 2000 kilometers wide surpassing the Himalayas in size. The mapping of the seafloor also revealed that these huge underwater mountain ranges have a deep trench which bisects the length of the ridges and in places is more than 2000 meters deep. Research into the heat flow from the ocean floor during the early 1960s revealed that the greatest heat flow was centered at the crests of these mid-oceanic ridges. Seismic studies show that the mid-oceanic ridges experience an elevated number of earthquakes. All these observations indicate intense geological activity at the mid-oceanic ridges.

Hunting Dinosaurs in the Deserts
Dinosaurs have such broad public and scientific appeal because they are portrayed as the gigantic and fearsome beasts who ruled the Earth longer than any other land animals about 150 million years and then suddenly and dramatically disappeared.
In fact, the word "dinosaur" was originally coined by Richard Owen in 1842 to mean "fearfully-great lizard." Over time, the term became simplified to "terrible lizard," but Dinosaurs are neither terrible nor are they lizards. Indeed, many were quite small, especially when they first appear in the fossil record of about 225 million years ago. If you're hunting for dinosaurs, you couldn't pick a better place than the North American deserts. Here in the arid regions of the Southwest, a sequence of geologic and climatic

INTRODUCTION and COURSE OVERVIEW
The Earth - Earth possesses an atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere. It is a dynamic planet, with active volcanos and earthquakes The earth changes slowly through time, by weathering and erosion of the landscape, and by changes in the position of continents and ocean basins driven by plate tectonics. Geology - Geology, which is the science of the study of the earth, can be generally divided into two broad areas: physical geology (dealing with earth materials and processes) and historical geology (dealing with the origin and development of the earth through time and the evolution of life). Geology is an applied science, built on principles of physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology. The study of geology spans a wide range of scale, from the microscopic (composition and structure of minerals) to the megascopic (composition of planets). Geologists also have a great appreciation of the 4th dimension (time), as the earth is very old (about 4.6 billion years). Geologists and Earth Scientists What does a geologist do? Some very important things in support of a modern, industrialized society:

Plate Tectonics and Climate
Monday, 1. December 2008, 15:06:12 climate change plate tectonics geology There is no doubt that plate tectonics have an influence on the global climate.
A change in global temperature of a few degrees Celsius over 50 years is dramatic. A change in global temperature of a few degrees Celsius over 5 000 000 years is NOT , you just cannot compare two trends on such extremely different time scales - a fact that some people seem to ignore.
About 90-70 million years ago India had split from the supercontinent Gondwana and raced northwards, sometimes at the incredible speed of 25 cm per year, until it rammed into Asia about 40 to 50 million years ago. Before the collision it was hot on earth, partly because volcanoes at the sea bottom released enormous quantities of the greenhouse gas CO into the atmosphere. The Cretaceous (145 million to 65 million years ago) was one long heat wave. Average annual temperatures at the equator topped 38°C and even polar temperatures hovered near a temperate 10°C.
Some of the undersea volcanism came to an end at the collision of India against Asia, and erosion of uplifted volcanic rocks in the tropics soaked up much of the CO

Home The Geological History of the Earth Summary The Geological History of the Earth
    Summary
    • We can read the Earth's geological history by studying the rock and fossil records. This history is not mere speculation. It is recorded in ways that we can verify independently in rocks and fossils from many places around the world and through many different techniques for determining ages. While we may never know every detail of the Earth's history, we already have a complete enough picture to understand the major processes and events that have shaped our planet.
The Earth has been shaped by active geology driven by internal heat. This geology made life possible by causing the outgassing of the material that made our oceans and atmosphere. Moreover, through the action of plate tectonics, geology has kept our planet's climate stable enough for water to remain liquid for the past 4 billion years or more.
Geology plays a role in making life possible, but life, once it takes hold, can also change the conditions on a planet. The oxygen in our atmosphere is a direct consequence of life. Today life affects our planet in another way: Our advanced civilization is capable of changing the way our climate functions, with consequences that we cannot fully predict.
We do not yet know how common habitable planets may be in the universe, but geology clearly plays a crucial role in habitability. We'll return to geological considerations many more times throughout this book.
