Its cause may also be officially described as unknown when infectious causes have been excluded.

Pneumonia
Key facts
  • Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children worldwide. Pneumonia kills an estimated 1.6 million children every year – more than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Pneumonia can be caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. Pneumonia can be prevented by immunization, adequate nutrition and by addressing environmental factors. Pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics, but less than 20% of children with pneumonia receive the antibiotics they need.
Pneumonia is a form of acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs. The lungs are made up of small sacs called alveoli, which fill with air when a healthy person breathes. When an individual has pneumonia, the alveoli are filled with pus and fluid, which makes breathing painful and limits oxygen intake. Pneumonia is the single largest cause of death in children worldwide. Every year, it kills an estimated 1.6 million children under the age of five years, accounting for 18% of all deaths of children under five years old worldwide. Pneumonia affects children and families everywhere, but is most prevalent in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Children can be protected from pneumonia, it can be

There are five main causes of pneumonia: Bacteria Viruses Mycoplasmas Other infectious agents, such as fungi including pneumoscystis Various Chemicals http://www.umm.edu University of Maryland Medical Center Causes of Pneumonia Pneumonia is caused by an infection or injury to the lower respiratory tract resulting in inflammation. Infectious agents or injury caused by aspiration of dust or chemical agents causes fluid to enter the alveolar spaces. The symptoms of pneumonia include chills, fever, cough, chest pain, labored breathing, fatigue, anorexia, headache, leucocytosis, and bloody sputum. Pneumonia can also result from the aspiration of gastric contents, water, or other irritants. Infectious pneumonia is common in the US with about 2-3 million cases being diagnosed each year resulting in 40,000 to 70,000 deaths. Mortality is estimated at 14% for patients requiring hospitalization. Risk factors include upper respiratory infection, alcoholism, cigarette smoking, institutionalization, malnutrition, immunocompromise, and illnesses such as cancer, liver or kidney disease, congestive heart disease and cerebro vascular disorder. Pulmonary defense mechanisms such as the cough reflex, mucocilliary action, and immune responses, normally prevent infections but pneumonia results when the pathogen gets past these mechanisms. Virulence and severity of the pneumonia depends on the health of the individual, the particular microorganism, and the size of the inoculation.

Three common causes are bacteria, viruses and fungi. You can also get pneumonia by accidentally inhaling a liquid or chemical. People most at risk are older than 65 or younger than 2 years of age, or already have health problems. If you have pneumonia, you may have difficulty breathing and have a cough and a fever. A physical exam and history can help determine if you have pneumonia. Chest x-rays and blood tests can help determine what is wrong. Treatment depends on what made you sick. If bacteria are the cause, antibiotics should help. Viral pneumonia may get better with rest and drinking liquids. Preventing pneumonia is always better than treating it. The best preventive measures include washing your hands frequently, not smoking, and wearing a mask when cleaning dusty or moldy areas. There is a vaccine for pneumococcal pneumonia, a bacterial infection which accounts for up to a quarter of all pneumonias.

Atypical pneumonia
Atypical pneumonia refers to pneumonia caused by certain bacteria, including Legionella pneumophila Mycoplasma pneumoniae , and Chlamydophila pneumoniae Pneumonia is a condition in which there is an infection of the lung.
Causes
Mycoplasma pneumonia is a type of atypical pneumonia. It is caused by the bacteria M. pneumoniae . It typically affects people younger than age 40. For more information on this type of pneumonia, see: Mycoplasma pneumonia Pneumonia due to chlamydia-related bacteria occurs year round and accounts for 5 - 15% of all pneumonias. It is usually mild. Pneumonia due to Legionella is seen more often in middle-aged and older adults, smokers, and those with chronic illnesses or a weak immune system. See also: Legionnaire's disease
Symptoms
Pneumonia due to mycoplasma and chlamydophila bacteria is usually mild.
  • Pneumonia due to Legionella pneumophila gets worse during the first 4 - 6 days, and then improves over 4 - 5 days.

Facts about pneumonia:
  • Pneumonia can occur year round, but is usually seen in the winter and spring. Boys are affected by pneumonia more often than girls. There is an increased chance of developing pneumonia in a crowded area. Ten to 15 percent of children with a respiratory infection have pneumonia.
What are the different types of pneumonia? The main types of pneumonia are:
  • bacterial pneumonia - caused by various bacteria. The streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common bacterium that causes bacterial pneumonia. Many other bacteria may cause bacterial pneumonia including:

A message to our visitors

A year has passed since the end of the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong and it appears that we (the world community in general) have been spared of a massive recurrence of this infection this year. Nonetheless, research on this disease is on-going and we would like to congratulate all who have contributed to furthering our knowledge of this disease. The convalescent period of this disease has not been uneventful. Complications of the disease such as Lung fibrosis resulting in limitations to respiratory function, post-traumatic stress disorder like psychological trauma, side-effects of corticosteroid therapy (adrenal insufficiency and osteonecrosis) continue to surface. We have included some of the relevant images and references with this update. With the help of many co-workers from Hong Kong and other countries, we are pleased to announce that we have compiled a book documenting our collective knowledge and experience on SARS. This book is titled "Imaging in SARS", published by Cambridge University Press (

Pneumonia Symptoms
Pneumonia is a common infection that affects one of both the lungs in individuals and this condition is caused by viruses, fungi and bacteria. Before antibiotics for pneumonia were discovered this condition resulted in a number of deaths. At present every year around 3 million fresh pneumonia cases are observed in United States. There are different types of pneumonia and the pneumonia symptoms helps in identifying the form of pneumonia. Pneumonia symptoms are caused by breathing in of small droplets containing the organisms responsible for causing pneumonia. These droplets get in the air when a person suffering from this infection coughs or sneezes. In some other cases the bacteria and viruses present in the mouth or nose and throat may enter the lungs and cause this infection. The pneumonia symptoms initially begin with cold which is followed by high fever. A person suffering from pneumonia may experience shaking chills along with cough that has sputum production. The sputum produced may be discolored and in some cases it may also be bloody. Shortness of breath is often experienced by those suffering from this condition. Patients also tend to experience clammy skin because of the fever and chills. Chest pain may also be one of the pneumonia symptoms and this may be experienced if the outer pleural areas of lungs are also involved. The pain in many cases tends to worsen whenever the patients take deep breaths and this is called pleuritic pain. In many cases the onset of the symptoms may be quite slow. In some other cases nausea and vomiting along with diarrhea may also be experienced.
