PNEUMONIA Your child has been coughing for several days. The cough then becomes deeper and junkier, and he starts having fevers. He (and you) are up all night, and cough medicine doesn't seem to be helping. You begin to worry, "Could my child have pneumonia?" You hear a child at school was diagnosed with pneumonia. Your own child has had a bit of a cough lately. You wonder just how contagious is pneumonia? Could your child have it? These are very common situations. There is really no good way for any parent to tell if their child has pneumonia. However, there are many ways to tell if your child probably does NOT have pneumonia. Here is the Dr. Sears guide. WHAT IS PNEUMONIA? Pneumonia is an infection inside the lungs. It occurs when either bacteria or viruses get stuck in the lungs - the germs multiply and form an infected area. The most common bacterium is called pneumococcus (the new vaccine Prevnar protects against this). There are several viruses that can cause it. HOW DOES PNEUMONIA OCCUR?

pneumonia is still a serious illness despite the widespread use of antibiotics. This article outlines the different types of pneumonia, the symptoms, and how it is treated
    http://www.medic8.com/healthguide/articles/pneumonia.html
    PNEUMONIA
Pneumonia is an illness of the lungs and respiratory system in which the alveoli (microscopic air-filled sacs of the lung responsible for absorbing oxygen from the atmosphere) become inflamed and flooded with fluid. Pneumonia can result from a variety of causes, including infection with bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites. Pneumonia may also occur from chemical or physical injury to the lungs, or indirectly due to another medical illness, such as lung cancer or alcohol abuse. Typical symptoms associated with pneumonia include cough, chest pain, fever, and difficulty in breathing. Diagnostic tools include x-rays and examination of the sputum. Treatment depends on the cause of pneumonia; bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics. Pneumonia is a common illness which occurs in all age groups, and is a leading cause of death among the elderly and people who are chronically ill. Vaccines to prevent certain types of pneumonia are available. The prognosis for an individual depends on the type of pneumonia, the appropriate treatment, any complications, and the person's underlying health.
    Symptoms
    Diagnosis
To diagnose pneumonia, health care providers rely on a patient's symptoms and findings from physical examination. Information from a chest X-ray, blood tests, and sputum cultures may also be helpful. The chest X-ray is typically used for diagnosis in hospitals and some clinics with X-ray facilities. However, in a community setting (general practice), pneumonia is usually diagnosed based on symptoms and physical examination alone. Diagnosing pneumonia can be difficult in some people, especially those who have other illnesses. Occasionally a chest CT scan or other tests may be needed to distinguish pneumonia from other illnesses.

A Toronto nurse takes precautions The deadly pneumonia, which is spreading across the world, could be more contagious than previously thought, an expert has warned. Hong Kong, which has been hit hard, has established quarantine camps in an effort to try to contain the spread of the disease. And at Singapore airport, nurses monitored passengers for signs of the illness. Seven were sent to hospital because they showed symptoms of the pneumonia. The illness, dubbed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), has so far killed 62 people worldwide, and infected 1,800. Initially it was thought that the illness could only be spread by close contact.

    What Is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia (nu-MO-ne-ah) is an infection in one or both of the lungs. Many small germs, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi, can cause pneumonia.
    Overview
Pneumonia and its symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Many factors affect how serious pneumonia is, such as the type of germ causing the infection and your age and overall health. Pneumonia tends to be more serious for:
    • Infants and young children. Older adults (people 65 years or older). People who have other health problems like heart failure diabetes , or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). People who have weak immune systems as a result of diseases or other factors. These may include HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy (a treatment for cancer), or an organ or bone marrow transplant
    Outlook
Pneumonia is common in the United States. Treatment for pneumonia depends on its cause, how severe your symptoms are, and your age and overall health. Many people can be treated at home, often with oral antibiotics. Children usually start to feel better in 1 to 2 days. For adults, it usually takes 2 to 3 days. Anyone whose symptoms get worse should be checked by a doctor.

The mysterious pneumonia-type disease that has struck Hong Kong and spread around the world has caused considerable alarm. It has killed at least 10 people worldwide and infected over 500 more. In an indication of how serious a threat this could be, the World Health Organization took the unusual step of issuing an alert that travelers should avoid Hong Kong and Southern China. Medical experts in Hong Kong now think that they have identified the pathogen that causes the disease. While it's too early to say that things are under control, the disease's spread may be slowing.
One lesson that should be learned from this episode is how important a free press is. The disease almost certainly originated in China. Numerous deaths from a mysterious respiratory disease occurred in the southern coastal provinces of Guangdong and Fujian over the last several months. Indeed, the first cases of what's likely the same disease showed up in Guangdong in mid-November. By early January, panic had spread to some Guangdong cities.
