Many different organisms can cause it, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Pneumonia can range from mild to severe, and can even be deadly. The severity depends on the type of organism causing pneumonia, as well as your age and underlying health. Alternative Names Bronchopneumonia; Community-acquired pneumonia Causes, incidence, and risk factors Pneumonia is a common illness that affects millions of people each year in the United States. Bacterial pneumonias tend to be the most serious and, in adults, the most common cause of pneumonia. The most common pneumonia-causing bacterium in adults is Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus). Respiratory viruses are the most common causes of pneumonia in young children, peaking between the ages of 2 and 3. By school age, the bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae becomes more common.

    New suspect in super-pneumonia outbreak
Microbiologists have identified a second virus that may be involved in the deadly global outbreak of "super-pneumonia", raising the possibility that it may take more than one virus to trigger the disease. Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) has now claimed 17 lives and infected more than 450 people in 14 countries around the world. Infections are still rising in Hong Kong, with several schools closed, and in Singapore 740 people have been ordered to stay in quarantine after suspected contact with SARS victims. An earlier pneumonia outbreak in China, suspected to be linked, caused five deaths and 305 cases. The second suspect virus was identified by a team led by Malik Peiris at the University of Hong Kong, which has managed to grow the virus in the lab. Peiris told

World put on alert for severe pneumonia
The World Health Organization has issued a rare global alert, warning health authorities about a highly contagious form of pneumonia in the Far East. Several cases of "severe atypical" pneumonia have emerged in hospitals in China, Hong Kong and Vietnam. The disease is highly infectious, with a single patient infecting 20 staff at a hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. It can also be fatal, with five deaths reported from 305 cases in China since mid-February. Chlamydia infection was implicated in two of the deaths. The WHO is currently carrying out laboratory tests on samples to confirm find cause and any links between the outbreaks. The Hong Kong health department has reported 23 hospital workers with fevers. Eight of these showed early signs of pneumonia in chest X-rays. No link has been made to the recent outbreak of avian influenza - bird-flu - in Hong Kong.

    Virus causing deadly pneumonia revealed
The mystery respiratory illness that has caused worldwide alarm and killed 16 people belongs to the paramyxovirus family, tests on patients in Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore strongly suggest. But although the identification of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) will come as an enormous relief to public health officials, there are no effective drugs to treat it. "Everyone will be relieved it's not from a completely unknown taxonomic group," says Yvonne Cossart, an infectious diseases expert at the University of Sydney, Australia. "But the antivirals we have at our disposal will not be useful against it." Late on Tuesday, researchers in Frankfurt revealed that throat swab and sputum tests from three patients contained particles resembling paramyxoviruses - a family of viruses related to influenza, and which includes measles.

    Breakthrough in fight against super-pneumonia
Doctors in Hong Kong have developed a simple diagnostic test for the virus responsible for the global outbreak of "super-pneumonia". The test, validated on eight patients so far, was made possible after scientists succeeded in growing the virus in the laboratory. That breakthrough will also be crucial in helping researchers precisely identify the pathogen, as well as assess potential drug treatments. The disease, dubbed Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), has now infected 450 people in 14 countries, and killed at least 17. An earlier outbreak of severe pneumonia struck more than 300 people in the Guangdong province of southern China, causing five deaths. The new diagnostic test may be used to assist the World Health Organization teams still investigating whether the same virus is responsible for both outbreaks. The so-called "antibody-binding test" was developed by Malik Peiris and colleagues at the University of Hong Kong. The team have shown that the test can detect antibodies to the virus found in SARS patients, and could therefore be used to diagnose the condition from blood samples. The test has still to be fully validated, but the hope is that it will also be useful in detecting antibodies in recovered patients, which will help track the spread of the disease.

Welcome to AsthmaStory
This web site is the place for me to tell my Asthma Story and hopefully stimulate some thought and hope for those that are suffering with Asthma.
At the age of 30, I was diagnosed with severe Asthma. In 1995 I came close to dying from an asthma attack when a near fatal asthma attack put me into full respiratory and cardiac arrest! A neighbor took the above picture while paramedics were performing CPR on me as I lay on our front porch.
After this close call, I decided I had to try and reclaim my life and fight this terrible disease. Even despite the claims of medical professionals that asthma is incurable. My story is proof that extremely severe asthma can be cured. A friend of ours who is a pharmacist then found fascinating new research by Dr. David Hahn in medical journals about the bacteria Chlamydia pneumoniae (and mycoplasma) and the interesting link it has to being a possible cause of asthma. These studies indicate this research may be of benefit to 50% or more of adults and children diagnosed with asthma.
I am not a doctor and do not offer medical advice here. I also don't sell anything on this website. This is only a place for me to share the steps I took to become completely cured of asthma. Now that my asthma is cured, I hiked hundreds of miles of rugged terrain on the Appalachian trail (AT)

Millican Dalton (1867-1947) - a man ahead of his time

vegetarian, pacifist, eccentric, troglodyte, mountain guide, insurance clerk
Forsaking his job as a London insurance clerk, Millican Dalton dropped out long before it became fashionable or even acceptable.
Primarily remembered for his eccentric asceticism, Millican Dalton was a man who had the courage to follow his dreams and to live by his convictions. Dissatisfied with the life dealt him, he created his own.
He had a disdain for modern urban materialism, rejecting it in favour of a life of stoic simplicity. Millican Dalton lived a life at one with nature - growing his own food and sewing his own clothes. He was a teetotaler, a vegetarian, a socialist and a staunch pacifist.
Many people have considered walking out of the office and chucking it all in for a life of simplicity. Millican Dalton lived that dream.
Millican Dalton neither wrote books nor painted pictures. His legacy can be difficult to asses and easy to dismiss. Having lived a life outwith contemporary norms, it is easy to mistake his eccentricity for affectation. Indeed he is often defined by his odd habits, his homemade clothes, his cave dwelling or his mountain guiding. All these things were true, but they were merely consequeces of his quest.
