Mend the heart and calm the mind with creative self-expression. If you're struggling with anxiety,a chronic illness diagnosis, depression, perfectionism, feeling stuck, grief or loss, I invite you to experience the healing power of expressive arts. We will use clay, pastels, crayons, colored pencils, paper, collage, mandalas and more to access thoughts and feelings. Art will get to those feelings easier and quicker than words alone. No art experience is necessary. Judgement is the root of all stress
Barbara Ganim

Reading Social Justice
Writer, activist, and North Star Fund donor and advisory board member Grace Paley passed on August 22, 2007. Grace was a stalwart member of our community funding board in the 1980s and an inspiration to everyone in the social justice movement. Her art and activism will be sorely missed in New York and around the world.
To honor Grace’s legacy of an engaged literature, we’re holding an online community discussion on books that inspire commitment to social justice. And we're including every part of North Star Fund's engaged community of donor activists, community activists, board member and staff. Here are some featured recommendations. Works by Grace Paley Hugh Hogan, Executive Director, North Star Fund Sachi Ferris, Border Crossers (grantee since 2005)
What has inspired you?
What would you recommend to a budding philanthropic or community activist? And give us a line or two on why. It can be any genre, any age, any language. Policy wonk tomes, lyric poetry, childrens lit, trashy celebrity bio—inspiration isn’t confined to genre, period or geographical location.

How Much do you Weigh on Mars?
I saw a post here and thought it was worthing mentioning.
The NASA Website has a great tool to help kids explore the solar system. http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/index.cfm?Display=Flash
It is all flash based, so it should grab the attention of students. It start with the Sun, covers all the planets, and even includes asteroids and comets. Each stop on the Explorer just has a quick overview, so it won't overwhelm younger visitors. The real magic happens when you follow the about link. There you will find a slightly longer overview, information about the planets moons, an extensive gallery, facts and figures, and a Kids Eye View (which is where I learned I only weigh 77 lbs on Mars).
This is just begging for a webquest.

8 Days a Week
April 6 - 13, 2005 Hot Spot Peace of art: Mary Tuma's installation Homes for the Disembodied is part of "Made in Palestine." IN THE SPIRIT of opening minds and bringing new perspectives, SomArts Cultural Center is hosting 'Made in Palestine,' a showcase of works by 23 Palestinian contemporary artists living in the Middle East and the United States. The works utilize an array of media and techniques, from the avant-garde (such as chocolate silk-screened onto glass, a steel box filled with rocks, and illuminated plastic hearts) to more traditional acrylic, ink, and photographic creations. Influenced by, among other things, ancient Egypt, surrealism, social realism, and installation art, the contributors are inspired by the creative works of the past and present, as well as their current personal situations. While establishing peace between Israelis and Palestinians may be like an artist's work in progress, open dialogues and exhibitions such as this may be a step toward peaceful coexistence. Exhibition runs April 7-21. Opening reception Thurs/7, 5:30-8:30 p.m.; gallery hours Tues.-Wed., noon-4 p.m.; Thurs.-Sat., noon-7 p.m.; Sun., noon-6 p.m., SomArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan, S.F.
