Holiday Traditions of Poland "Wesolych Swiat" (Season's Greetings)
Poland is a land of intriguing traditions traditions and legends. So important is the first star of the night that Christmas Eve has been given the affectionate name of "little star" or "Gwiazdka," in remembrance of the star of Bethlehem. On that night, all watch the sky anxiously, hoping to be the first to cry out, "The star!' The moment the star appears, everyone exchanges greetings and good wishes. Families unite for the most carefully planned meal of the year, "Wigilia," Christmas supper. According to tradition, bits of hay have been spread beneath the table cloth as a reminder that Christ was born in a manger. An even number of people must be seated around the table or tradition states someone might die in the coming year. Although "Wigilia" is a family feast, it's considered back luck to entertain a guest on this sacred night. In some places an empty place setting is left at the table in case a stranger should happen arrive. Traditionally, there is no meat served during "Wigilia." Still, the meal is plentiful and luxurious. It begins with the breaking of the "Oplatek," a semi-transparent wafer of unleavened dough, stamped with scenes of the nativity. Everyone at the table breaks off a piece and eats it as a symbol of their unity with Christ. Custom prescribes that the number of dishes in the meal be odd, 9 or 11. An even number would eliminate any hope of an increase in wealth, children or anything desirable.

Its culture stretches back hundreds of years. It includes some famous people, places, and things. One of Poland's most famous citizens is a man who changed the world. This man understood important things about our world, our solar system, and our universe. Many thought he was crazy. Others thought he was a genius. Some even thought he was the devil. This man's name was Nicolaus Copernicus. Nicolas Copernicus was born in Torun, Poland, on February 19, 1473. He was the youngest of four children. His name at birth was Mikolai Kopernik. Later in his life, he chose the Latin version of his name Nicolaus Copernicus.

Wooden Boxes From Poland - Poland Folk Art
Poland Traditional Box Carved wooden boxes in traditional folk style are great souvenirs from Poland. Traditionally, these wooden crafts were made during the winter months when farming families had to keep themselves occupied until spring. Some artists earned prominence for their box-making and -decorating skills. The symbols carved on top of the wooden boxes were thought to bring prosperity or protection. Brides' dowry chests were also decorated with these symbols. Prev Next More Poland Travel More Poland Travel More Poland Travel

T he population of Poland is around 38 million. The World War II toll on Poland was a staggering 6 million-including 3 million Jews slaughtered in the Nazi death camps. At present, more than 98 percent of the people are Poles, with small groups of Ukrainians, Belorussians, Germans, Slovaks and Lithuanians.
The Poles speak a Slavic language and have a special fondness for English. In fact, English is the most popular foreign language in Poland. The Polish population is largely urban centric with 60% of the population living in cities. There are a number of large cities, including five with populations of more than 500000. Warsaw, the capital, is the largest with a head count of 1.7 million inhabitants. Krakow (Cracow), Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk, Szczecin and Lodz are some other large metropolises.
Poland's national culture emerged as a synthesis of Latin and Byzantine influences and was further engendered by the numerous European occupations, throughout its history. Customs, traditions and mores display a diverse mix of the East and the West - a colorful cohabitation of the vibrant Eastern ornamental style and the somber Islamic influence.

    Poland Clothing
The traditional Poland clothing was highly influenced by the rich Eastern ornamental style in association with the Islamic textures. In the contemporary period the Poland clothing is no different from those worn in the eastern countries. The t-shirts and jeans are the huge craze among the youth in Poland. The printed sweatshirts are also in vogue among the Polish people. But in certain occasions and courtly festivals the traditional Poland clothing is still in practice.
Few of the traditional Poland clothing include:
Delia – it was a dress meant for the male. It was generally made of wool or velvet. It had a fine finish with the fur. The delia mostly bore loose, short sleeves which were not stitched. The buttons that decorated the delia were metals and they were stitched on a position above the breast. This dress was an imported item in Poland from the east. The word 'delia' is even derived from Turkey.
Kontusz – The Polish and Lithuanian noblemen used to put on this traditional Poland clothing in the 16th and 17th century. It was an outer garment which was mostly worn over an inner garment (zupan). This attire was an imported one to Poland via Hungary to Turkey. This dress generally was a long robe hanging down to the knees. In the summer months the sleeves were worn untied. The sleeves were thrown on the back. During the winter months, a fur lining was usually attached. Sometimes a delia was worn over the kontusz. A long wide belt called as pas kontuszowy was used to tie the kontusz to the body.

Lifestyle You can see a country from the window of a coach or hotel, and be happy with what you learn from a guided tour. But if that's all you get, after some time you'll be feeling like a walking encyclopedia - knowing just the facts, dates, numbers and individual images of a place. You can't get an emotional feel for the place unless you have direct contact with its people, because their customs, culture and traditions leave a mark in your memory of that special corner of the world.
Greetings Polish people enjoy greeting each other. If you find the word "cześć"(Hi!) to difficult to pronounce, you can use "Hello" instead and you'll certainly be understood. When arriving at a meeting, Polish people shake hands. When the company is larger it's right to shake hands with all those present. As a rule the first few minutes of any gathering are taken up with everyone greeting everyone else. This breaks the ice and makes life easier for the shy. Don't be surprised if some people exchange embraces or even a kiss during a greeting. This indicates familiarity rather than love. In the fervor of greetings someone may even lean over to kiss visitors from abroad. If that happens, don't panic, just return the gesture. But with moderation, a kissed greeting is in fact a delicate touch of cheeks. Words and gestures When the greetings are over the talking starts. In any group there is bound to be someone who speaks English - the most popular foreign language in Poland. The rest will wholeheartedly take it upon them to teach the foreigner some Polish. Someone will almost certainly suggest you repeat the tongue twister: "W Szczebrzeszynie chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie" (say: Vuh Shchebsheshinyeh kshanshch bshmee fuh tchuchynyeh), which is difficult even for Poles to say properly. The foreigner can but try - and in so doing amuse all those assembled. After this the conversation may continue in the form of unconjugated verbs and gestures.
