KENNEDY HISTORY We know little of the customs and culture of the first American Indians in this area, but they left a heritage to our early settlers of a civilization well founded and a land they loved and enjoyed from nature's own gift. After the settlers arrived and the plowing of the lands became more common many Indian implements, flints and signs of their presence in this area have been discovered. Some of the Typical Projectile Points found in the Town of Poland A beautiful pipe and several large spear heads were found near Kennedy by Mr. Fay Stafford of Clark's Corners. He also found an excellent flint tomahawk found in the same locality. ( information on Fay Stafford was found in the book "Jamestown Past and Present" published in 1913.) It was in 1798 that Amzi Atwater a surveyor of the Holland Land Company was on a survey of this area and reported back to Joseph Ellicott, Agent of the Company, about the beautiful forest of white pines, measuring from 5 to 6 feet in breath, also maple, birch, beech, and chestnut. Doctor Thomas Ruston Kennedy who built the first mills, was the son of Doctor Samuel Kennedy and his mother was the daughter of Doctor Ruston, an eminent surgeon of Philadelphia, PA.

Hotels in Warsaw Poland History Early history of poland is followed closely by the westerly movements of early Slavic peoples known as Polanie tribe. This tribe became the most powerful group in the latter part of the tenth century. Catholicism was embraced by their King, Miezko, and thus Catholicism took hold early in poland history. Miezko was succeeded by King Boleslav's who can be attributed for laying the foundation of present day Poland. Prior to World War II, poland history witnessed almost ten centuries of unrest, wars were fought, governments came and left, invaders raped and pillaged. It was only after Poland united with Lithuania under the Jagiellonian dynasty did it find stability and became a political power in Europe. During the fourteen to seventeen centuries Poland became the most powerful force with this coalition. In history of poland it is seen that its map changed drastically many times that Poland did not even exist on the map of Europe until the end of World War I. On Armistice Day, in November of 1918, Poland declared its independence as a modern republic. But soon after that war started off with Russia in 1920. Poland was victorious and it annexed some territories which are now Ukraine and Belorussia. There was still no peace, political instability and unrest resulted in military rule, which lasted until the World War II started. After the end of Second World War, the unrest continued in poland history. With the extensive destruction during the war, rebuilding the country was an un-daunting task for the polish people. Though it was liberated by the Soviets it was still under their influence. Soviets wielded power over the Poles, but the centralized form of their government never could get a hold in Poland as in other nations. The poles never agreed to the Soviet demands and acts of rebellion against the communist authorities continued over the next four decades. This resulted in the formation of Solidarity labor union which started strikes in the Gdansk shipyards, helping in the revolutionary causes thus attracting the attention of the rest of the world. Solitary movement was a success at creating civil unrest and history poland saw General Jaruzelski declareing marshal law in 1981.

Medieval Poland for Kids
Medieval Poland
During the Dark Ages , like most places in Europe , Poland was ruled by a lot of small princes and dukes, and none of them had very much power. Most of the people who lived in Poland were Slavs , but each little group of Slavs had its own leader. During the 800's AD , the Slavs had been busy fighting off the Holy Roman Emperors , but during the 900's there weren't any Holy Roman Emperors and Poland had been left pretty much alone. But in 962 AD, Otto I became the new Holy Roman Emperor and began to expand his empire by attacking his eastern neighbors. Duke Mieszko, a Slavic leader, decided he had better make all of Poland into one country that could defend itself against Otto's armies. Duke Mieszko kept Otto from making this a religious crusade by converting himself and his people to Christianity in 966 AD. Duke Mieszko lived a long time, and by the time he died in 992, he had made Poland one of the strongest countries in Europe. When Mieszko died, his son Boleslaw became the first King of Poland. Boleslaw was a strong ruler and general like his father, and he also ruled a long time, and by the time King Boleslaw died he had conquered a large

Like few other nations on earth, the Polish people have kept a national identity through centuries of war, abuse, and slavery. The location of Poland in Eastern Europe has kept it in the middle of some of the greatest conflicts. Despite all it has been through, the nation of Poland is a free and vibrant country today. The history of Poland dates back to the tenth century. It was then, in 966, that a ruler of a group of people called "Poliane" accepted Christianity as his religion and was recognized as a ruler by most of Europe. This ruler was Prince Mieszko, who became the first ruler of an official Polish state.

Poland : History
Independence for Poland was one of the 14 points enunciated by President Woodrow Wilson during World War I. Many Polish Americans enlisted in the military services to further this aim, and the United States worked at the postwar conference to ensure its implementation. However, the Poles were largely responsible for achieving their own independence in 1918. Authoritarian rule predominated for most of the period before World War II. On August 23, 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Ribbentrop-Molotov nonaggression pact, which secretly provided for the dismemberment of Poland into Nazi and Soviet-controlled zones. On September 1, 1939, Hitler ordered his troops into Poland. On September 17, Soviet troops invaded and then occupied eastern Poland under the terms of this agreement. After Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, Poland was completely occupied by German troops. The Poles formed an underground resistance movement and a government in exile, first in Paris and later in London, which was recognized by the Soviet Union. During World War II, 400,000 Poles fought under Soviet command, and 200,000 went into combat on Western fronts in units loyal to the Polish government in exile.

History
There's obviously something about the borders of Poland that say 'Hey, come and get it'. All of the great (and many of the lesser) European empire builders have been bingeing and purging here since the Polanie ('people of the fields') parked themselves in the 10th century. The unrelenting incursions have ceased only recently with the waning of Soviet influence. Modern History
Just when it seemed like Poland had put together a pretty fine working definition of 'worst ever', WWI kicked in. With Poland's three occupying powers at war, most fighting took place on territories inhabited by Poles, who were often conscripted into opposing occupying armies and forced to fight one another. The loss of life and livelihood was staggering. In the confusion following the war, particularly Russia's preoccupation with the October Revolution, Poland was able to consolidate its bedraggled self into a sovereign identity and attempted to build up its nation and nationhood practically from scratch. This monumental project was going along pretty well until WWII, when first Germany and then the Soviet Union gobbled up Poland, viciously subduing the population at large - the Nazis paying particular attention to the Jews.

Last updated : Nov 2009 Poland History For much of the medieval and early modern period, Poland was one of the biggest states in Europe , although generally cut off from the mainstream of European life. By the 18th century , however, the combination of an outdated social structure , the emergence of powerful neighbours, a king with no real power and a parliament that was able to veto any legislation if so much as one member voted against it (the Liberum Veto) had reduced Poland to the role of little more than a confused buffer state between Austria, Prussia and Russia. One observer had commented on how the Polish state had

Poland : History
The poles possess one of the valuableest and most venerable historical traditions of all European peoples. Convention fixes the origins of Poland as a nation near the middle of the tenth century, contemporaneous with the Carolingians, Vikings, and Saracens, and a full hundred years before the Norman conquest of Britain in 1066. Throughout the consequent centuries, the Poles managed contempt great obstacles to build and maintain an unbroken cultural heritage. The same cannot be said of Polish statehood, which was notoriously precarious and episodic. times of freedom and prosperity alternated with phases of foreign domination and disaster. particularly in more recent centuries, frequent adversity subjected the Poles to hardships scarcely equaled in European history. Recommended general sources for the modern time include M.K. Dziewanowski's Poland in the Twentieth Century, The History of Poland since 1863, edited by R.F. Leslie, and Hans Roos's A History of Modern Poland. The most perceptive commentator on contemporary Central Europe, the journalist Timothy Garton Ash, covers the developments of the decade from the rise of Solidarity to the end of communist rule in his three works The Polish Revolution, The Uses of Adversity, and The Magic Lantern. Poland History
The Poles who were West Slavic people established Poland in the late 5th century. History was first written in the 10th century about Poland when the Polish nation changed into Christianity in 966. Prince Mieszko I was the first ruler and his son, Boleslaw I, was the first king of Poland. This established the Piast dynasty that lasted from 966 to 1370. During the Piast dynasty there where Piast kings with a lot of rivalries from nobility and Bohemian and Germanic invasions that made Poland a very troubled country. The last king of the dynasty was Casimir III, crowned in 1333. He extended Polish influence eastward to Lithuania and Russia. He acquired Pomerania from the Teutonic Knights and shifted borders between Poland and Germany. During his 37-year reign a university was established, laws were made more organized, castles grew strong, and minority groups were given protection (Grolier).
