    69. The Inspiration And Nature Of Democracy
The nature and significance of the appearance of democracy in a civilization.

The Inspiration And Nature Of Democracy
by Philip Atkinson A Common Prejudice
Whenever the notion of democracy is criticised contemporary citizens (circa 2000) often ignore the logic of the arguments but simply reiterate that ancient Greek civilization proved the value of democracy. It certainly did, but the example of ancient Greek civilization is the opposite of a recommendation for democracy. Ancient Greek civilization rose to wealth and power as a series of city states each ruled by a monarch, who the Greeks referred to as a tyrant. The start of the decline of ancient Greek civilization was marked by the Peloponessian war in the 5 th century BC, which was effectively a rebellion against the traditional rule of tyrants. The status quo was championed by Sparta and the rebellion by Athens, who had replaced their tyrant with a forum of wealthy citizens. The Athenian approach was to let the forum decide issues via a discussion followed by a vote, and this is generally considered as the birth of democracy. Hence the performance of the Athen's assembly at this time must be considered the ultimate example of democracy in action: a performance that is well documented by Thucydides in his history of the Peloponessian war. And this record is summarised by H.D.F. Kitto, in his work ' The Greeks ', as follows:

Old Main 320 Finding the life of the mind
Article written by Carol McNamara published in the stateman Sept 27, 2010.
When students commence their college education, they often believe that it will change their lives in a practical way. They will study to become engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, scientists, entrepreneurs, along with myriad other noble and useful possibilities. But how many also arrive at university in search of the life of the mind? Tom Wolfe's novel "I Am Charlotte Simmons" pursues that very question by asking us to consider what the life of the mind is: is the human mind hardwired so that every aspect of a human life is determined by biology, or do environment and education have an impact? In fact, the novel is something of an experiment in the debate between nurture and nature, newly revived by the field of sociobiology and remarkable advances in neuroscience. There has been much discussion about the literary merits of "I Am Charlotte Simmons". It won an award for the worst sex scene in literature for the year it came out. Whatever its stylistic merits, the book raises a vital question for college students. It is an age old question: who am I? Charlotte quite literally believes she finds the life of the mind as a star student in Dr. Starling's Introduction to Neuroscience class. The question the professor asks the class to consider from the start is whether human beings are genetically determined animals with a rational mind; much like a rock with consciousness, which has no ability to change the arc of its flight once thrown, but only the capacity to rationalize the path nature has chosen for it or whether external influences, like good teachers and great books, and the free will to act on what we learn, can really change the trajectory of our lives?

    What is Political Science?
Political science is the study of governments and the governing procedures in individual countries and in international bodies such as the United Nations. Irrespective of the unit of government political science deals with, it is primarily concerned with "the authoritative allocation of values" - namely, how individuals and groups go about obtaining the most of what they cherish and value. Political scientists study how governments are structured, how governments make decisions, as well as the content of those decisions, and how governments solve societal conflicts, and what conditions are most conducive to the orderly process of government. Specifically, political scientists study such phenomena as political parties and voting behavior, public opinion, interest groups, bureaucracies and administrative procedures, national security and international organization, executive politics and legislative behavior, courts and the administration of justice, intergovernmental relations, political personality, mass movements, revolution, ideologies, political philosophy, community organization and urban politics, and the expanding field of policy studies.

    75. Neoliberalism: Origins, Theory, Definition.
Attempts to summarise neoliberalism as a philosophy, not simply as economics.
    http://web.inter.nl.net/users/Paul.Treanor/neoliberalism.html
    Neoliberalism: origins, theory, definition
Since the 1990's activists use the word 'neoliberalism' for global market-liberalism ('capitalism') and for free-trade policies. In this sense, it is widely used in South America. 'Neoliberalism' is often used interchangeably with 'globalisation'. But free markets and global free trade are not new, and this use of the word ignores developments in the advanced economies. The analysis here compares neoliberalism with its historical predecessors. Neoliberalism is not just economics: it is a social and moral philosophy, in some aspects qualitatively different from liberalism. Last changes 02 December 2005. You may republish and reproduce the content of this webpage, for non-commercial and academic purposes.
    Neoliberalism inadequately defined?
The definition of neoliberalism presented here is more abstract than usual - but it also suggests that neoliberalism has been underestimated. A widely quoted example of those 'usual definitions' is What is "Neo-Liberalism"?
Neo-liberalism is a set of economic policies that have become widespread during the last 25 years or so. Although the word is rarely heard in the United States, you can clearly see the effects of neo-liberalism here as the rich grow richer and the poor grow poorer....Around the world, neo-liberalism has been imposed by powerful financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the Inter- American Development Bank....the capitalist crisis over the last 25 years, with its shrinking profit rates, inspired the corporate elite to revive economic liberalism. That's what makes it 'neo' or new.

Justice is hence primarily related to individual actions. Individual persons are the primary bearer of responsibilities (ethical individualism). Persons have to take responsibility for their individual actions and for circumstances they could change through such actions or omissions. Winter of 1989-90 was carnival time in eastern Europe. One people after another declared themselves for self-government, demanded their totalitarian states become open to political diversity, tore down barriers and "threw out the rascals." All but a few of these countries have found it easier to revolt than to organize and govern. They are bedeviled by economic hardship, ethnic conflict and the weight of decades of repressive government; in some cases they had never known political self-determination. They were embarking on a difficult journey of trial and discovery. The experiences of these peoples, featured daily in our newspapers, show what we Americans sometimes forget, that building a government from scratch is no easy task. Our country undertook such a task two hundred years ago, wrested its independence from a governing power one much less intrusive than the totalitarian states of modern times and confronted the opportunity to shape its political future. For the first time, a nation reflected upon the purposes of government and with deliberation attempted to build its political institutions to suit its character. For the first time, there was an opportunity for a nation to ask the question, "What are the aims of government when the people have decided to govern themselves?"
