WANTED: Big Ideas and Inspired Policy
editorial HERE .  This isn't just about what's needed for the economy, but about creating a viable political platform for Democrats to counter the demagogic nihilism and fear-mongering that hard times make so much easier for the GOP, FOX, etc. etc. "Something" - no matter how crazy, dangerous or far-fetched - always beats Nothing.  And at the level of pure noise in the political arena, nihilistic rants and bigotry are drowning out Presidential  "Hey guys, we'e doing a pretty good job over here!" timidity at a time of 10%-15%  un-and-under-employment. The new intellectuals?
Rumours of the ‘death of the intellectual’ have been circulating for years. But Richard Reeves, writing in the latest RSA Journal , thinks they're exaggerated. Rather, our great thinkers are coming under ever greater pressure to be all things to all people: the new intellectuals The real problem with the media, though, is not trivialisation but polemicisation. There is still plenty of space for intellectuals to opine; indeed, the increase in the size of publications and the expanding column inches of opinion have, if anything, made this market bigger. But the need to be provocative in order to secure a slot has increased. The desire for a ‘strong line’, controversy and easily understood standpoints, even in the serious media, militates against thoughtful discussion. “There is a real fear of being distorted,” says Swift. “So sometimes you just don’t bother.” The pressure to strike a pose is almost irresistible. Polemics, postures and soundbites are what the media wants, and so a person or institution that wants a media profile has to deliver. Meanwhile the culture of academia, based on slowly produced, carefully peer-reviewed journals, is going in the opposite direction. ...The risk in these conditions is that barriers to entry are lowered, so that even if the prevalence and status of intellectuals remains unchanged, the quality of their product diminishes. ...But if we need to hold intellectuals to high standards, we should also lower our expectations – not about the quality of their work, but about the ability of any one person, however brilliant, to act as a one-stop solution for our problems.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 65% of Likely U.S. Voters say if they had the option next week, they would vote to get rid of the entire Congress and start all over again. Only 20% would opt to keep the entire Congress instead. Fifteen percent (15%) aren’t sure. (To see survey question wording, click here Of course, the Political Class strongly disagrees. While 84% of Mainstream voters would opt to get rid of the entire Congress, 64% of the Political Class would vote instead to keep them all. Not surprisingly, 82% of Republicans and 78% of unaffiliateds say dump them all. Despite their party’s control of both the House and Senate, Democratic voters are fairly evenly divided: 44% say it’s better to keep the entire Congress, but 38% would prefer to give all the national legislators the heave-ho.

Cindy Royal , a blogger at "Cindy's Take on Tech," writes an excellent post complaining about this recent cover of Wired Magazine Royal writes, Come to think of it, the last time that a woman was featured on your cover, because she was being featured in the magazine for an actual accomplishment, was way back in 1996 when it was Sherry Turkle , the academic and author. And, the only other time was in 1994, when musician/author Laurie Anderson was featured. Because since then, I guess no women have done anything notable in technology unless it had to do with their bodies? Really? Go Cindy!

India has the biggest number of people with franchise rights and the largest number of political parties, which take part in election campaign. In the 1996 national elections, almost 600 million people voted and an average of 26 candidates competed for each of the 543 territorial constituency seats. Elections are held at different levels. The two major election levels are at national level, after which the national government is established and at state level after which the state government is established. Elections are also held for city, town and village councils. There are different political issues in Indian politics. Some are national level and some regional level. Some communities just demand more economical and social rights for their communities. While others demand more autonomy for their cultures within the Indian states. Some demanded autonomous states within the Indian Union, while the others demanded to be independent from India. With all its problems India survives as a single state with democratic character. But a number of political problems still exist and remain unsolved in India.

General examination
Every graduate student must achieve a "Ph.D. pass" on the general examination and be recommended for continuation in the program before undertaking dissertation research. The purpose of the general examination is to ascertain a student's knowledge of political science and his or her preparedness for advanced research. The best preparation for the exam is extensive seminar work in the department, supplemented as necessary by independent reading and study. The general examination consists of written examinations in three separate fields and an oral examination. Students may opt to take written examinations in two, rather than three, fields on the condition that they complete 14 (rather than the required 12) graded seminars, including a coherent 3-course 500-level sequence in a third field (but not including WWS 507b, 508b, or 508c). These courses must be chosen from outside the fields covered by the two written exams.
Normally, at least two of a student's general examination fields are selected from the seven regular examination fields listed in the next paragraph. A student may design a third, “substitute” field to replace the third regular examination field. Substitute fields should cohere with the student's educational and research interests, and must not substantially overlap with the student's other fields. A student may propose either a standard exam from another department (e.g., political economy from Economics), or, in unusual circumstances, a special examination. Students in the

RELIGION AND POLITICS
1) Liberty and freedom of religion
2) Citizenship, and the right to equality and non-discrimination and
3) Neutrality and the separation of state and religion.
The first two principles have posed little controversy in the Indian context. Rather, the right to freedom of religion and the right to equality and non-discrimination are generally recognized as important constitutional values in their own right as well as a foundation of Indian secularism. The third principle i.e. relation between religion and politics, is the main cause of problem. To understand the relation between religion and politics it is necessary to understand the concepts of Toleration, and secularism/communalism.

GLOBALISATION AND THE INDIAN ECONOMY
We are living in the age of technology when distances of time and spaces have current and the vast big world of ours has become one global village.
Globalization is a process which draws countries of their insulation and makes them join the rest of the world in the march toward a new world order. It means the growing interconnectedness of the modern world. The increased ease of movement of goods, services, capital, people and information across national borders is rapidly creating a single global economy.
