Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy , such as noise, heat, or light. Pollutants, the elements of pollution, can be foreign substances or energies, or naturally occurring; when naturally occurring, they are considered contaminants when they exceed natural levels. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution . The Blacksmith Institute issues annually a list of the world's worst polluted places. Light Pollution 101
Metro-area light pollution map, assembled by MAS member Craig Cotner, shows the extent of the problem. Pink areas are heavily light-polluted with incrementally less pollution indicated by yellow, green and purple. Note the encroachment of the Twin Cities' light pollution on the area around the Onan Observatory.
What is light pollution?
An unfortunate side affect of growth and development is increased levels of "light pollution" light which doesn't serve its intended purpose of providing safety and convenience. Instead, it spills outward and upward from poorly designed or inefficient light fixtures, trespassing on surrounding properties and polluting the skies. "Light pollution" includes:

A Solution for the Problem of Light Pollution
by
Ashley Knowles
In association with the Manchester Astronomical Society
Introduction
As we approach the millenium, most amateur astronomers are acutely aware of the problems of light pollution and the difficulties associated with observing the night sky in heavily populated areas. They also probably feel that things will only get worse.
Light pollution is a rather all-encompassing expression describing the light which hinders observation. It has several sources, including natural ones such as the light generated by the bombardment of the upper atmosphere by solar radiation. However, the most pervasive source of light pollution is the glare associated with the street lighting in built up areas. Short of moving house, there is little the individual urban amateur astronomer can do to eliminate this problem. There is some hope, however. Filtering the light pollution and viewing only the wavelengths of light of interest is one way of achieving good results.
A recent lecture at Manchester Astronomical Society illustrated the manufacturing technology which is used to make filters to reject the unwanted light. This brief paper describes the efforts under way in Manchester to make routine light pollution filtering a realistic goal.

Pollution prevention (P2) is reducing or eliminating waste at the source by modifying production processes, promoting the use of non-toxic or less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques, and re-using materials rather than putting them into the waste stream. Since pollution prevention is a key policy in national environmental protection activities EPA has developed a 2010-2014 Pollution Prevention Program Strategic Plan . A number of Partnership Programs and other EPA initiatives utilize pollution prevention approaches in their work.

Air Pollution
When people think about air pollution, they usually think about smog, acid rain, CFC's, and other forms of outdoor air pollution. But did you know that air pollution also can exist inside homes and other buildings? It can, and every year, the health of many people is affected by chemical substances present in the air within buildings. A great deal of research on pollution is being conducted at laboratories and universities. The goals of the research are to find solutions and to educate the public about the problem. Two places where this type of work is being done are LBNL and the University of California, Berkeley Let's take a closer look at the various types of air pollution , the effects that they have on people, and what is being (or not being) done to correct the problem.

http://www.smithlifescience.com/Pollution.htm
Pollution
Pollution is defined as the release of substances into the environment that change it for the worse. Most pollution is the result of human activity. In particular, the technology that we depend on to create material goods and increase our quality of life often releases pollutants simultaneously. Pollution is typically classified into three categories based upon the medium that is impacted: air, land and water. Each of these types of pollution is related to the other. For instance, chemicals released as a gas from a coal-burning electric generator is a form of air pollution. However, as rain traps these chemicals and falls to the ground, the impact is to make the water more acidic. Acid rain collects in bodies of water (water pollution) and harms plant and animal life. Acid rain can also change the chemistry of the soil. Though these changes are often not dramatic enough to be considered land pollution, the change can hurt plants that depend upon a stable pH. Air Pollution
The air we breathe is made up of gaseous nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%) with trace amounts of other gases, vaporized liquids, and tiny particles of solids. Only 0.035% of the air is carbon dioxide. Studies have detected over 2500 additional chemicals in urban air. Most of the materials that are considered air pollutants come from cars, trucks, factories, cigarettes, cleaning materials, fumes and fibers from synthetic materials, and other products of human activity. Repeated exposure to air pollutants can cause damage to the lungs, green plants, buildings, metals, and other materials.

    What is nonpoint source pollution?
Nonpoint source pollution generally results from land runoff, precipitation, atmospheric deposition, drainage, seepage or hydrologic modification. The term "nonpoint source" is defined to mean any source of water pollution that does not meet the legal definition of "point source" in section 502(14) of the Clean Water Act. That definition states: The term "point source" means any discernible, confined and discrete conveyance, including but not limited to any pipe, ditch, channel, tunnel, conduit, well, discrete fissure, container, rolling stock, concentrated animal feeding operation, or vessel or other floating craft, from which pollutants are or may be discharged. This term does not include agricultural storm water discharges and return flows from irrigated agriculture. Unlike pollution from industrial and sewage treatment plants, nonpoint source (NPS) pollution comes from many diffuse sources. NPS pollution is caused by rainfall or snowmelt moving over and through the ground. As the runoff moves, it picks up and carries away natural and human-made pollutants, finally depositing them into lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal waters and ground waters.

      Litter Trashes the Environment
Litter is more than an eyesore on city streets and alongside highways. Litter pollutes waterways and leaches toxic chemicals into soil and groundwater as it breaks down. Most litter begins with a careless or thoughtless act by a single person who tosses away a cigarette butt or an empty soda can, which means there is a lot you can do to prevent litter.

October 29, 2010 at 2:00 pm by Katie Machol The following is from the environmental themed advice column EarthTalk®, by the Editors of the non-profit publication E/The Environmental Magazine , that we’ll be regularly featuring here on CL ’s Green Community Dear EarthTalk: Can pollution affect my child’s IQ? Ellen Franzen, Portland, OR A spate of recent studies suggests that pollution can indeed affect the intelligence of children of all ages (even those still in utero). The primary culprit is smog—ground level pollution comprised of vehicle and smokestack emissions that can form a dense haze on and near busy roadways. While smog has long been known to be a health hazard for asthmatics, heart patients and the elderly, only recently have we begun to learn about its unique effects on our young people. A 2007 Harvard School of Public Health study found that children between the ages of eight and 11 living and attending school in areas of Boston with higher levels of traffic pollutants scored an average of 3.7 points lower on IQ tests than children living in less polluted areas. “The effect of pollution on intelligence was similar to that seen in children whose mothers smoked 10 cigarettes a day while pregnant, or in kids who have been exposed to lead,” reports Dr. Shakira Franco Suglia, lead author of the study.
