What Is Noise Pollution?
Noise pollution is unwanted human-created sound that has the effect of being annoying, distracting, painful, or physically harmful. It is a public health issue that is adversely affecting the lives of millions of people throughout the world. People continuously exposed to noise experience hearing loss, elevated stress levels, mood swings, hypertension, depression, lost sleep and productivity. In children, it results in slowed learning. We are a coalition of citizens, elected representatives, law enforcement professionals, educators, researchers, students and activists from the United States and abroad. We are dedicated to combating this urban blight that is ruining communities everywhere. The New England Light Pollution Advisory Group
The New England Light Pollution Advisory Group (NELPAG) is a volunteer group founded during the autumn of 1993 for the purpose of educating the public on the virtues of efficient, glare-free outdoor night lighting and the tremendous benefits of low-lumen (low-light-output) lighting for many (if not most) outdoor applications. The NELPAG sponsors irregular meetings throughout the New England region that bring together lighting engineers, physicians, power utility representatives, government officials, astronomers, journalists, and the general public for discussion of improvement in outdoor night lighting. The goals of the NELPAG have been to provide resources to people involved in outdoor lighting issues, from state and city/town officials discussing the implementation of laws and bylaws, to utility companies who are concerned with street lighting, to ordinary people interested in lighting their store parking lot (or even their driveway or yard). Many outdoor lights are, in fact, completely unnecessary (such as most lights late at night, and streetlights along most limited-access highways, where 6-foot-high median barriers would provide much greater safety). On a separate webpage here, we outline the

Featured article... Types Of Pollution: Too Many For Our Small World Pollution is a word that no one is stranger to. We have heard it on the news, read it in articles, learned about it in school, and we are affected by it on a daily basis. However, there are many types of pollution and each has its own set of causes and effects. Types Of Pollution: Air Pollution Exposure to this type of pollution can result in nasal problems, coughing, asthma, certain cancers, and heart problems. Types Of Pollution: Water Pollution Water is one of our Earth's precious resources and we are damaging it at alarming rates. There is a thinking out there that it is an endless supply, but that is far from the truth. There are several reasons for water pollution, which include: There are many other causes of this type of pollution and all are damaging to our marine mammals, fish, plant life, and to us. The toxins will cause illness and in many cases death. Types Of Pollution: Noise Pollution It is not until we are robbed of silence that we realize how important it is to our everyday health. Noise pollution is another type of pollution. Excess exposure to noise can affect our nervous system and cause unneeded stress to our minds and bodies. Some noise pollutant culprits include:

Japan Table of Contents As Japan changed from an agricultural society to an urbanized industrial power, much of its natural beauty was destroyed and defaced by overcrowding and industrial development. However, as the world's leading importer of both exhaustible and renewable natural resources and the second largest consumer of fossil fuels, Japan came to realize that it had a major international responsibility to conserve and protect the environment. By 1990 Japan had some of the world's strictest environmental protection regulations. These regulations were the consequence of a number of wellpublicized environmental disasters. Cadmium poisoning from industrial waste in Toyama Prefecture was discovered to be the cause of the extremely painful itai itai disease ( itai itai Groups also pressured the government and industry for a system of compensation for pollution victims. A series of lawsuits in the early 1970s established that corporations were responsible for damage cause by their products or activities. The Pollution Health Damage Compensation Law of 1973 provides industry funds for victims. Compensation, however, was slow, and awards were small, but the establishment of a government fund helped industry diffuse public outrage. In 1984 it was reported that Japan had more than 85,000 recognized victims of environmental pollution, with an estimated rate of increase of 6 percent a year. The regulations aimed at business were not enough to solve Japan's environmental problems, according to the Environment Agency's 1989

  • What Kind of Chemical Pollutants Pollute Water? Water pollution comes from many forms: erosion sediment, effluent or bacteriological contaminants, trash and chemicals. Out of the four, chemicals can have the worst effects and the biggest impact. The water system has the ability to handle reasonable quantities of sediment and effluent, and trash can be filtered out. Chemical... Criteria Pollutants Vs. Hazardous Pollutants With technology expanding in the United States and worldwide, air pollution is also growing. A short explanation of the problem.

Light Pollution
New images quantify a nocturnal pollutant March 18, 2006 What's light pollution? Click here and see Clinton Township Lighting Ordinance I know many non-amateur astronomers are saying "Huh? What's that?" The best way to describe Light Pollution is to give you a couple of examples. While driving on any highway or road at night, do you have to squint from the glare as you approach street lights? Does the street light in front of your house shine into your windows to the point where you need the blinds down to sleep at night? Does your neighbors light on his back porch light up YOUR back yard? When you look up at the sky on a cloudy night, can you see the clouds? Well if you've answered yes to any of these questions you've experienced light pollution. What are the adverse impacts of poor night time lighting?
  • Urban Sky Glow : Just because we're 50+ miles from NYC doesn't mean we're rural anymore. Look around! Urban sky glow is destroying the rural look of Hunterdon County and our view of the universe. We don't live in the clouds; we don't need to light them. Direct Glare : Direct glare is defined as the visual discomfort resulting from insufficiently shielded light sources in the field of view. One should "see the effect, not the light source". Use of the term "direct glare" is recommended in lieu of the word "glare" alone. The direct glare definition means if you can see an unshielded lamp, or the luminaire maximum candlepower zone, you may well have glare. However, usually when you are near a luminaire, you will see these parameters, of course. So a reasonable definition limiting the field of view is required.

    Prevention of Air Pollution
A compilation of some simple steps for prevention of air pollution, which will help you do your bit to save the environment. Continue reading for more information on atmospheric pollution, and why we need to take it seriously. Air pollution is a phenomenon wherein the release of harmful chemicals in the atmosphere results in contamination of air, and makes it unsuitable for various lifeforms on the planet. It is considered to be one of the most serious environmental issues in the world. If air pollution statistics compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO) are to be believed, more than 3 million people in the world die due to some health problems related to environmental air pollution every year. That's not at all surprising, considering that the harmful effects of air pollution range from various health disorders in humans to destruction of the ozone layer of the atmosphere. All being said, our priority now has to be prevention of air pollution and efforts need to start at the very grass root level, i.e. from our side. Before we move on to the details of these 'efforts', let's go through some important air pollution facts which emphasize on the need of its prevention.

    • Some studies show: the effects of not sleeping in total darkness can degrade the immune system of animals and humans. Poor lighting and wasted energy is misuse of electricity and money. Misdirected light, 'Light Trespass' is a nuisance and architecturally unappealing. Studies show that various uses of lighting may actually increase crime, just exactly the opposite of what people try to achieve. The light pollution from inferior lighting design on highways creates a hazard to driving known as 'Road Glare.'

    Pollution
To learn more about the major threats to aquatic biodiversity please select from the following: Oceans have historically been the dumping grounds for the wastes from society. Fortunately, this view has changed and regulations have become much more stringent, but the effects of the past still linger. Pollution has been very damaging to aquatic ecosystems, and may consist of agricultural, urban, and industrial wastes containing contaminants such as sewage, fertilizer, and heavy metals that have proven to be very damaging to aquatic habitats and species. In addition to toxic pollutants, increased nutrients, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, from city sewage and fertilizers from agricultural areas (e.g. animal feed lots) have also proven to be very damaging to aquatic ecosystems. Certain levels of these nutrients are known to cause harmful algal blooms in both freshwater and marine habitats. In turn, algal blooms impact aquatic biodiversity by affecting water clarity, depleting oxygen levels, and crowding out organisms within an ecosystem. In some instances algal blooms have produced neuro-toxins that have led to species die-offs and illnesses such as paralytic shellfish poisoning.
