Pop Art
What is it?
Pop Art is a 20th century art movement that utilized the imagery and techniques of consumerism and popular culture . Pop art developed in the late1950's as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism and flourished in the sixties and early seventies. Pop Art favored figural imagery and the reproduction of everyday objects , such as Campbell Soup cans, comic strips and advertisements. The movement eliminated distinctions between "good" and "bad" taste and between fine art and commercial art techniques.

Where did Pop Art occur?
Pop Art developed primarily in the United States and Britain . In the US, it was linked to the wealth and prosperity of the post World War II era, and artists of the movement responded to the nation's consumer society. Pop Art in Britain was less brash, and had a more nostalgic flavor

A Continuing History by Marco Livingstone

A decade after its original release, Pop Art by Marco Livingstone is now available in paperback. It illustrates the work of more than 130 artists, much of which was unpublished before the hardcover edition. Pop Art offers a great overview from the precursors of Pop Art to contemporary artists.
Among the American forerunners, Livingstone forgot to mention the 19th-century trompe-l'oeil painters such as John Haberle (see one of his Dollar Bill paintings on the left) and William Michael Harnett who clearly belong in the context of Livingstone's Pop Art study. But for the rest, the author offers a very complete picture.
Among the Pop Art precursors mentioned by Livingstone are Dadaists like the French artist Marcel Duchamp and the German Kurt Schwitters. Duchamp became famous with his "ready-mades," everyday objects torn from their usual contexts and exhibited as art. The most shocking piece was Fountain (1917), the urinal that Duchamp had dared to declare art. Two years before, he had already "created"
