Rhapsody in Code: Gershwin and Pop Programming
By Donna L Davis Submitted Thu, 2006-01-05 21:12 Pitting principled art against commercial interest isn't confined to the software development industry or the developer dot stars who have bantered for our edification on the topic. Talented individuals have long wrestled with the dichotomy. "Ira, promise me that you'll never become a genius." Julie Bishop is credited with the arguably weak line while playing the part of Ira Gershwin's wife in the 1945 film biography of composer George Gershwin that was only loosely based on actual events. Yet, the film succeeds in providing many toe-tapping performances while dramatizing the internal struggles (real or embellished in retrospect for the purpose of melodrama) Gershwin suffered. Should I write popular show-tunes that sell (resource-intensive Microsoft apps) or hone my craft to a more refined art-form by penning concertos (in the language if not the key of C)? Admittedly, the last application I developed is more comparable to the lightweight ditty "Delishious" or "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin" than the intricate, innovative "Rhapsody in Blue."

Please help to improve this article by introducing more precise citations where appropriate (April 2010) POP-2 , often referred to as was a programming language developed around 1970 from the earlier language POP-1 (originally named COWSEL ) by Robin Popplestone and Rod Burstall at the University of Edinburgh . It drew roots from many sources: the languages LISP and ALGOL 60 , and theoretical ideas from Landin . It used an incremental compiler , which gave it some of the flexibility of an interpreted language , including allowing new function definitions at run time and modification of function definitions while a program was running (both of which are features of dynamic compilation ), without the overhead of an interpreted language. It has been described as 'The first true functional language' at HOPL, the History of Programming Languages web site

The NONMEM computer program is written and distributed in ANSI FORTRAN 77 code and, therefore, can be used with any hardware and operating system incorporating a FORTRAN 77 compiler adhering to the ANSI standard. Since a NONMEM run can take considerable CPU time, perhaps many hours, depending on the speed of the computer and the size of the problem, it is advisable to use a fast machine. In addition to fast time-shared machines, 32-bit PC's are commonly used, as are RISC machines of different sorts. NONMEM is an evolving program, reflecting tested methodological and programming improvements. The software consists of three parts: (i) NONMEM itself, the basic and very general nonlinear regression program, (ii) PREDPP, a very powerful package of subroutines handling population PK data, which can free the user from coding any kinetic type equations him/herself, while simultaneously allowing complicated patient-type data to be easily used, and (iii) NM-TRAN, a preprocessor allowing control and other needed inputs to be specified in a user-friendly manner. Both NONMEM and NM-TRAN are batch type programs.

B.3 yank-pop
After understanding yank and current-kill , you know how to approach the yank-pop function. Leaving out the documentation to save space, it looks like this: p last-command which is set by yank and is discussed elsewhere. (See copy-region-as-kill The let clause sets the variable before to true or false depending whether point is before or after mark and then the region between point and mark is deleted. This is the region that was just inserted by the previous yank and it is this text that will be replaced. funcall calls its first argument as a function, passing remaining arguments to it. The first argument is whatever the or expression returns. The two remaining arguments are the positions of point and mark set by the preceding yank command. There is more, but that is the hardest part.

Assembly Language Programming
This is a page of supplementary notes to help you learn to program in Intel Assembler and debug your programs using DOS DEBUG. These pages are an adjunct to the main set of notes for this course written by Alan Pinck. For some historical background on how assembly language programming originated, and why it looks the way it does, select this link This page contains the following sections: Understanding PUSH, POP, CALL, and INT Program Control Flow Sample Programs and Program Style Program Debugging and Tracing
Understanding PUSH, POP, CALL, and INT
The Stack is an essential part of assembly language programming. This section starts with the simple Intel PUSH/POP instructions and then shows how other assembly language instructions such as CALL and INT also use The Stack. The PUSH, POP, CALL, and INT instructions all use the stack (the memory area pointed at by SS:SP). In .COM format executables, the stack is at the very top (high memory) of the single segment, typically starting at FFFEh, and it grows downward in memory (toward zero). The following DEBUG scripts and their annotated output files show how the Intel CPU handles each type of instruction. Each of the input text files was run through DEBUG to produce the corresponding output file, to which explanatory comments were added by hand:
