... Geography is the study of the earth and its features, inhabitants, and phenomena. A literal translation would be "to describe or write about the Earth". The first person to use the word "geography" was Eratosthenes (276-194 B.C.). Four historical traditions in geographical research are the spatial analysis of natural and human phenomena (geography as a study of distribution), area studies (places and regions), study of man-land relationship, and research in earth sciences Nonetheless, modern geography is an all-encompassing discipline that foremost seeks to understand the world and all of its human and natural complexities – not merely where objects are, but how they have changed and come to be. As "the bridge between the human and physical sciences," geography is divided into two main branches – human geography and physical geography The following outline is provided as an overview of and introduction to geography: Map of the Earth

ONS Titchfield
A former Royal Air Force base, this 10 acre site is just one mile outside Titchfield village, midway between Portsmouth and Southampton. With responsibility for the 10-yearly census, our work at this site focuses on population, demography, geography, and regional and local statistics. Around 95 of the Information Management team are based here. Titchfield Staffing Strategy
At present, many people at the Titchfield site are working on the build up to the next Census in 2011. The 10 yearly census does bring some logistical problems for ONS in being able to increase our resource pool to cope with the intensive work needed to develop, run and produce the outputs from the Census, and then reducing back down to normal numbers for the period between Censuses. A staffing strategy is in place to enable us to manage the increase and reduction in staff numbers effectively, and this means that all Titchfield based recruitment will be up to a 4 year fixed term appointments initially.

The Office of National Statistics’ move to Wales has been dogged by criticism. Relocation manager
Phil Lewis explains how they are making sure the quality of statistical output remains unaffected

In 2004, following the Lyons Review, government set the Office for National Statistics (ONS) the target of relocating 600 posts out of London and the South East by March 2008, and a further 250 by 2010.
At that time ONS work was spread across four sites – the headquarters in Pimlico, offices in Newport, South Wales, and Titchfield in Hampshire, and also the General Register Office (GRO) based in Southport, Merseyside.
ONS has a long history of successfully relocating jobs out of London – in the last 20 years Census and population work have been moved from London to Titchfield, and the GRO to Southport – but the challenge this time was to transfer the majority of ONS’ statistical work out of London without compromising at any time the quality of the statistics produced.
The decision was taken to develop a site strategy aimed at creating centres of excellence. With the transfer of the GRO to the Identity and Passport Service, this leaves London, Newport and Titchfield as ONS office locations. Newport became the official corporate headquarters in summer 2007, and is the focus of all macro-economic and social statistical activity. Titchfield is the centre for population, demography, geography and regional and local statistics. The 2011 Census will also be based there.
