Portugal Culture
Portugal has developed a specific culture while being influenced by various civilizations that have crossed the Mediterranean and the European continent, or were introduced when it played an active role during the Age of Discovery. Portuguese literature, one of the earliest Western literatures, developed through text and song. Until 1350, the Portuguese-Galician troubadours spread their literary influence to most of the Iberian Peninsula.[39] Gil Vicente (ca. 1465 - ca. 1536), was one of the founders of both Portuguese and Spanish dramatic traditions. Adventurer and poet Luís de Camões (ca. 1524–1580) wrote the epic poem "Os Lusíadas" (The Lusiads), with Virgil's Aeneid as his main influence. Modern Portuguese poetry is rooted in neoclassic and contemporary styles, as exemplified by Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935). Modern Portuguese literature is represented by authors such as Almeida Garrett, Camilo Castelo Branco, Eça de Queiroz, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and António Lobo Antunes. Particularly popular and distinguished is José Saramago, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for literature.

Portugal - Culture
The eventful history of Portugal and the proud of the Portuguese of their nation is reflected in a rich culture. Of particular importance is the art of the painted wall tiles "Azulejos", the Manueline architectural style and the style of Portuguese music "Fado".
Azulejos
© www.bigfoto.com Azulejos in Lisbon Each traveler to Portugal will notice the blue painted tiles at the beginning of the journey, which deck out house fronts, walls, benches, tables and even whole interior rooms of churches. They show pictures, that often tell stories about great past times and important events for the portuguese history. The Portuguese people take a big pride in these "Azulejos" because they look back on a many hundred years old tradition of following this industrial art. The at that time technologically far more developed Moors brought the knowledge of painting wall tiles to the region, when they conquered the Iberian peninsula. The origin of the Azulejos from the Arab world is shown, like in many other words of the Portuguese language, in the Name. "Al Zulaij" is Arabic for "little polished stone". It is often erroneously assumed the name "Azulejo" were linked to the portuguese word "azul", which means "blue". The similarity of the two words and the blue color of Azulejos are by pure chance. The technique allowed initialy only to decorate the tiles with simple geometric shapes. After the reconquista, however, the Portuguese and Spain craftsmen refined the process, so that henceforth also complicate paintings were admired on the Azulejos. While the Azulejos in Spain disappeared more and more over the centuries, in Portugal the art is omnipresent until today.
