    GEOGRAPHY
Portugal Table of Contents Portugal shares the Iberian Peninsula with Spain, although it is only about one-sixth as large as its neighbor. Including the Azores (Açores in Portuguese) and Madeira, the country has a total area of 92,080 square kilometers. Portugal lies on the westernmost promontory of continental Europe. The rugged Pyrenees Mountains separate Iberia from the heart of the European continent, and Portugal is even further distant across the vastness of Spain. Distance and isolation have created in Portugal a sense that it is a part of Europe geographically but apart from it culturally, socially, economically, politically, and even psychologically. Even in the early 1990s, Lisbon (Lisboa in Portuguese) was a two-to-three-day drive from Paris Portugal is bounded on the west and south by the Atlantic Ocean and on the north and east by Spain. The country's shape is roughly that of a rectangle, with its short sides on the north and south and its long sides on the east and west. Portugal's Atlantic coastline is 837 kilometers long; its northern and eastern frontiers with Spain are 336 and 839 kilometers long, respectively. Historically, Portugal emerged as a separate country during centuries of struggle with the Spanish provinces of León and Castile. Even hundreds of years after breaking away from Spain for the last time in 1640, fears remained in Portugal that it might one day be swallowed up by larger and more powerful Spain, perhaps not militarily, but culturally and economically. That sentiment is expressed by the Portuguese proverb that "neither a good wind nor a good marriage ever come from Spain." Meanwhile, Portugal's long coast has given it an "Atlantic vocation" and propelled its historic ventures of global exploration and colonization.

A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. Physical Geography
Portugal is an extension of the mountainous formations of the Iberian Peninsula. In its terrain two types of relief are distinguished: the South and North of the river Tagus.
In the north the relief is more rugged, slopes are steep and cut by deep valleys. The weather sculptured higher grounds, giving them a distinct look of the Spanish landscape.
Between the rivers Minho and Douro lies a mountanious chain, that ramifies itself upto the the coastline and leaving a narrow marginal band behind. Between the Douro and the Tagus are raised the highest peaks: Serra do Marão and Serra da Estrela (6 539 feet/ 1 993 meters).
In the South of the river Tagus, the land is more uniform, marshy and of scarce relief. The predominant vegetation, in this region, is limited to plants and shrubs (charnecas) or mediterranean trees (cork-trees, scarlet-oaks, fig-trees and olive-trees).
The hydrographic network is rich, gaining discharge and importance in rivers that begin in Spain, as the rivers Minho, douro, Tagus and Guadiana that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The estuaries of the Douro and the Tagus constitute important anchorages, having bestowed on the Portuguese nation an important natural platform for discovery and overseas commerce. portugal-live.net

    Human Geography
The coast concentrates a great part of the population, Porto and Lisbon sometimes achieve figures of 700 people per square kilometre in their land occupation.
The population begins to thin out from West to East and from North to South. The interior areas (Trás-os-Montes, Beiras, Alentejo and Serra Algarvia) register low rates of occupation. The Alentejo is an extreme example, its populated centres being very small and far away from each other.
Traditionally a country of emigration (about 3 million Portuguese live outside Europe), Portugal has in the last decades received many immigrants of Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola, Brazil and India.

Palacio Nacional de Pena, Sintra photo by StaraBlazkova (wikimedia commons) Portugal is an unspoilt and often overlooked country compared to its neighbour Spain.  However it has many gems that visitors will be hard pressed to find in the more popular areas of Europe, unless you get off the beaten track.  Portugal is a country of traditional villages, lively cities, scenic countryside, marvellous beaches and a number of World Heritage sites.  Another huge plus for visitors with motorhome rental or campervan hire here is that unless you travel in the peak months there are a very large number of places that you can stay overnight for free. In Portugal there are a great many places to stay overnight, there are the traditional campsites and farms a few suitable areas on the motorway network and Aires.  The Aires are a little less common here than in France and Spain but are located in the areas which you will need them, so as long as you plan your route carefully you shouldn’t have any problems.  The other huge bonus of Portugal is that all along the coast (apart from the Algarve in July and August) you will be able to camp on the beach front and in the woods and forests of the interior free of charge.

    Geography
Mainland Portugal is roughly the shape of a rectangle about 560 km long and 220 km wide on the west of the Iberian Peninsula. A 830-km Atlantic coastline borders the country on the west and south. In the north and east Portugal borders to Spain.
The river Tejo rise in Spain and meets the Atlantic in Lisbon. The river draws a line between the country's two parts which are very different. The archipelago of Azores is almost 1500 km west of Lisbon, nearly halfway between Portugal and New York. The area is 2.247 sq. km and consists of nine islands: Flores and Corvo on the northwest; Faial, Pico, São Jorge, Graciósa and Terceira in the middle; São Miguel and Santa Maria on the southwest. The "fairy islands" from volcanic origin are quite a different destination for vacationers. No hectic nightlife or crowded cities, but crystal clear water and marvelous nature. The nature is simply luxurious. So is the nature in the archipelago of Madeira, 964 Kms southwest of Lisbon. With an area of 794 sq. km, it is much smaller than the Azores and consists of eight larger islands and a few small islets. Only Madeira and Porto Santo are inhabited.
