Welcome
Modern Portugal's history starts in the 12th century when (with the help of a variety of Crusader types) the Christians in the north of the Iberian Peninsular finally began to evict the Moors. The new Portugal was anxious to be recognized as a proper Country by the Vatican, so to that end, the border between Spain and Portugal was ratified on the basis that Portugal agreed not to grab any Spanish land. It's now one of the oldest, and longest borders in Europe. The Portuguese Empire was the first of 'global' proportions, and also the longest. Blessed with natural explorers and seafarers like Henrique the Navigator , Bartolomeu Dias, Pedro Álvares Cabral and Vasco da Gama, the country fast became very wealthy. During this period Portugal became a leading trading nation and experienced high levels of growth resulting in some fine 'Manueline' (late Portuguese Gothic) architecture incorporating maritime detail. But the disastrous earthquake of 1755 with it's severe damage to the capital wiped much of this away and marked a cardinal point in the slow decline of Portugal's trade and influence. Although the Prime minister, Sebastião de Melo, later to become the Marquis of Pombal was the leading light in the

Portugal : History
By 1337, Portuguese explorers had reached the Canary Islands. Inspired by Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460), explorers such as Vasco da Gama, Bartolomeu Dias, and Pedro Alvares Cabral made explorations from Brazil to India and Japan. Portugal eventually became a massive colonial empire with vast territories in Africa (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Sao Tome) and Latin America (Brazil), and outposts in the Far East (East Timor, Macau, Goa). During the next 16 years, intense political rivalries and economic instability undermined newly established democratic institutions. Responding to pressing economic problems, a military government, which had taken power in 1926, named a prominent university economist, Dr. Antonio Salazar, as finance minister in 1928 and prime minister in 1932. For the next 42 years, Salazar and his successor, Marcelo Caetano (appointed prime minister in 1968), ruled Portugal as an authoritarian "corporate" state. Unlike most other European countries, Portugal remained neutral in World War II. It was a charter member of NATO, joining in 1949.

Over the next 200 years, the remaining Moors were driven out and the boundaries of Portugal fixed, and it was during this period (in 1143) that Portugal first became recognised as an independent entity, under the rule of King Afonso Henriques The Castilians were themselves expelled during 1385 after defeat at the hands of Prince Henry the Navigator , amongst whose acquisitions were the Azores and Madeira One of the best-known visitors to Madeira was Christopher Columbus Aragon and Castilla Philip II of Spain

Portugal History and Culture
History
Up to the Middle Ages, the history of Portugal is inseparable from that of Spain. Present-day Portugal became a part of the Roman province of Lusitania in the 2nd century BC. In the 5th century AD control of the region passed to the Visigoths, and in the 8th century it was included in the area of Moorish Muslim conquest. In 997 the territory between the Douro and Minho rivers (now northern Portugal) was retaken from the Moors by Bermudo II, king of Len, and in 1064 the reconquest was completed as far south as present-day Coimbra by Ferdinand I, king of Castile and Len. The reconquered districts were then organized into a feudal county, composed of Spanish fiefs. Portugal later derived its name from the northernmost fief, the Comitatus Portaculenis, which extended around the old Roman seaport of Portus Cale (present-day Porto). In 1093 Henry of Bourgogne came to the assistance of Castile when it was invaded by the Moors. In gratitude Alfonso I of Castile made Henry count of Portugal.

Portugal : History
The History of Portugal can be separated into seven broad times. The first begins in the Paleolithic time and extends to the formation of Portugal as an independent monarchy. During this time, Lusitania, that portion of the western Iberian Peninsula known today as Portugal, experienced many waves of conquest and settlement by Iberos, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Swabians, Visigoths, and Muslims. Of these successive waves of people, the Romans left the greatest imprint on present Portuguese society. The sixth, the time of constitutional monarchy, begins with the liberal revolution of 1820, which accomplished in Portugal for the first time a written constitution. This time includes a civil war in which constitutionalists triumphed over absolutists, the winning of freedom by Brazil, and the exploration of Portugal's African possessions. It ends with the collapse of rotativismo in the early twentieth century. The final time begins in 1910 with the downfall of the monarchy and the establishment of the First Republic. This time includes the corporative republic of Antnio de Oliveira Salazar; the collapse of that regime on April 25, 1974; and the establishment of Portugal's present democratic regime, the Second Republic. History
The revolution eventually played itself out. Many of its feared consequences, such as a communist takeover or a civil war, did not occur. Moreover, many of the actions, for example, nationalizations and collectivizations that were implemented during the revolution, had been reversed to a great extent by early 1993, and the serious damage done to the overall economy was gradually being repaired. The economy grew rapidly in the second half of the 1980s and continued to show respectable growth rates in the early 1990s. As another indication of improving economic health, Portugal's currency, the escudo, was strong enough to be placed in the exchange rate mechanism of the European Monetary System (see Glossary) in April 1992. The revolution's legacy also had a positive side, however, and nearly two decades after the sequence of events that began in April 1974, some remarkable achievements could be seen. After centuries of isolation and backwardness, Portugal had become an fully integral part of Western Europe through its membership in the European Community (EC). In the first half of 1992, Portugal assumed the presidency of the EC and fulfilled the obligations of this office in a professional manner. Even more significant, perhaps, were the establishment and consolidation of a system of parliamentary democracy. After a troubled start, this democracy, watched a had given the country a strong and competent government able to bring about peaceful change.

History of Portugal
Portugal is one of the oldest states in Europe. It traces its modern history to A.D. 1140 when, following a 9-year rebellion against the King of Leon-Castile, Afonso Henriques, the Count of Portugal, became the country's first king, Afonso I. Afonso and his successors expanded their territory southward, capturing Lisbon from the Moors in 1147. The approximate present-day boundaries were secured in 1249 by Afonso III.
Portugal eventually became a massive colonial empire with vast territories in Africa and Latin America (Brazil) and outposts in the Far East (East Timor, Macau, Goa).
Dynastic disputes led in 1580 to the succession of Philip II of Spain to the Portuguese throne. A revolt ended Spanish hegemony in 1640, and the House of Braganca was established as Portugal's ruling family, lasting until the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910.
