(Complete Works of Gil Vicente, Book 1) MDLXXV.
He was the most important Portuguese playwright and yet also the royal goldsmith, the master of the scales at the Mint and the author of the famous Belém Monstrance. In 1502, he performed Auto da Visitação (Monólogo do Vaqueiro) before the queen just as she was about to give birth, and this marked the beginning of a fertile career as a regular and brilliant writer of comedies. His work represents the coming together of the mediaeval inheritance (especially in the different genres and poetic rhythms that he favoured - systematically using the popular metre in both morality plays and farces) and the Renaissance spirit, which was a critical exercise in its denunciation of both institutional irregularities and society’s vices. Amongst his innumerable works are: Auto da Índia , 1509, a farce criticising the way in which, after systematically setting sail with great euphoria for the Far East in search of riches, the Portuguese were necessarily forced to abandon their nation and family situations; the series of morality plays known as the Autos das Barcas (

Early court writers followed many of the traditions, ideas, forms and structures of the French poets, whose style became etched into the very fabric of the Portuguese language and people. One of the earliest figures in Portuguese literature was Dom Dinis (1279-1325), who became known as the 'poet king'. He composed many lyrical verses on the themes of love, friendship, chivalry and courtly affairs.

SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE LITERATURE
Biblical and Hebraic Influences
One result of the Christian struggle against Muslim invaders of the Iberian peninsula from the eighth century onward was the blending of national and religious aspirations, which revealed itself in Spanish literature. Jews and Christians cooperated in translating the Bible into the vernacular, and the Old Testament version was taken direct from the Hebrew in renderings that antedate 1250. Thus, although Juan I of Aragon prohibited such activities in 1233, the Wise (Alfonso X General e grande Estoria , linked the history of the world as known in his time with the Hebraic history of the Bible. In the 15 th century further biblical projects were promoted by Jews or Conversos. The version by (1422) was followed by that published by , the dialect of Spanish which Jewish exiles took with them after the Expulsion of 1492. With the official Catholic ban on Spanish versions of the Bible a century later, these became a Jewish monopoly, and after 1600 Spain ceased to be a Bible-reading country until the Spanish hierarchy changed its policy at the end of the 18 th century.

    Portuguese Literature
Portuguese literature was formed on the basis of a single, unified geographical space, namely the Portuguese territory, although it was later to spread to various parts of the world as a consequence of the Portuguese maritime discoveries in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This great adventure resulted in an extremely rich travel literature and was responsible for the expansion of the national language. To English speakers, the most famous writer in the Portuguese language is the poet luvs vaz de Camoes or Luvs Vaz Camoens (1524-June 10, 1580), author of the epic poem, Lusiad. Several other authors and poets are also internationally known, such as: Ena de Queiros (1845-1900), one of the most famous Portuguese language novelists; Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), one of the greatest poets in the history of the language; Jorge Amado (1912-2001), a popular novelist; and Jose Saramago (born 1922) who was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1998.

The earliest of these, three in number, are the Cancioneiro da Ajuda, da Vaticana, and Colocci-Brancuti, written in the 13th cent. In the early 20th cent. the scholarly work of Carolina Micaëlis de Vasconcelos on the Cancioneiro da Ajuda opened large vistas into the past of Portuguese literature. The early poems were greatly influenced by the Provençal language and literature, but they had the individual flavor and meter of Portuguese and Galician, then a dialect of Portuguese (see Provençal literature ). King Dinis, who ruled Portugal in the late 13th and early 14th cent., was an accomplished poet and, like his father, Alfonso III, followed the Provençal custom of encouraging poetic activity in his court. Prose writing took longer to develop. Religious and historical writings ultimately led to the romances of chivalry, the progenitor of which

Contact us Writing the Portuguese history The earliest manifestations of Portuguese literature are to be found in verse, dating from the twelfth century. These were collected together in three song-books: the Cancioneiro da Ajuda (13C), the Cancioneiro da Vaticana and the Cancioneiro da Biblioteca Nacional. In the nineteenth century, the Portuguese literature is better understood in connection with Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism and other European aesthetic tendencies. In the twentieth century, there is the influence of Modernism and other vanguard movements, as well as post-modernism. Here, we give you some examples of the main Portuguese authors: Almeida Garrett (1799-1854) introduced Romanticism in Portugal with the poem "Camões", written in 1825. He helped to develop Portuguese theatre, creating Teatro Nacional and writing repertory plays, amongst which was his masterpiece Frei Luís de Sousa, from 1843. He cultivated the historical novel and was a notable poet writing about love and its contradictions, sensuality and women. Blindeness

The 16th century saw the phenomenal rise of Portuguese poetry with the writings of the prolific poet Luis de Camoes whose epic poem named ‘The Lusiadas’ was conceived after being influenced by Virgil’s magnum opus Aeneid about the hero Aeneus. Modern Portuguese poetry though is more a follower of the neoclassical trends and modern stylizations like those observed in the works of Fernando Pessoa. Some pf the famous writers of the present times include Antonio Lobo Antunes, Camilo Castelo Branco, Almeida Garrett and ,many others. The most prolific among them at present is definitely Jose Saramago who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1998.

The Portuguese language was developed gradually from the Vulgar language (i.e. Vulgar Latin ) spoken in the countries which formed part of the Roman Empire and, both in morphology and syntax, it represents an organic transformation of Latin without the direct intervention of any foreign tongue. The sounds, grammatical forms, and syntactical types, with a few exceptions, are derived from Latin, but the vocabulary has absorbed a number of Germanic and Arabic words, and a few have Celtic or Iberia n origin. Before the close of the Middle Ages the language threatened to become almost as abbreviated as French , but learned writers, in their passion for antiquity, re-approximated the vocabulary to Latin. The Renaissance commenced a separation between literary men and the people, between the written and spoken tongue, which with some exceptions lasted until the beginning of the 19th century . Then the Romanticists went back to tradition and drew on the poetry and every day speech of the people, and, thanks to the writings of such men as
