A First Guide to PostScript Peter Weingartner 24 February, 2006 This is the fifth edition of the First Guide to PostScript . It differs from the previous editions in that a number of errors which people have brought to my attention have been fixed and a number of common reader questions have been addressed. I have also added some information on how to work with colors and raster graphics. It is my hope that this document is now stable and reasonably error-free. If you find an error, please send me e-mail My sincere thanks goes out to everyone who has sent me e-mail concerning the guide. Whether you were asking a question, or offering me a correction, I sincerely appreciate it. My only regret is that I have not been able to be as responsive to questions and corrections as I would like. I left Indiana University quite a long time ago (nearly ten years as of the time of this writing), and while I still have write access to my old account space I can not be sure that I always will have access. I will maintain the original copy at Indiana University while I have access, but from now on the official copy will be maintained at my personal website , where you can also find out a little more about me, if you are so inclined.

Books
Glenn Reid, principal and founder of RightBrain Software, has written and published two books with Addison-Wesley, both on the PostScript Language.
PostScript Language Program Design, 1987 The first of these books, PostScript Language Program Design , is Adobe's "green book", and is still in print after 16 years (and in fact has not even been revised in that time!). It's available at technical book stores everywhere. It's a pretty hard-core book for those with serious PostScript programming to do.
Thinking in PostScript, 1990
The second book, Thinking in PostScript , did not have the power of Adobe's marketing behind it, and has been out of print since the first printing but is a valuable book nonetheless. It takes a completely different angle from all other PostScript books. The book is a result of Glenn Reid's years trying to teach people to write PostScript programs, during which he discovered that people tended to try to make PostScript "look like" other programming languages they already knew. There is even a chapter in this book entitled "PostScript Is Not Like C", because it is really a very different language, and one must learn to "think" in PostScript in order to be a good programmer. We're proud to offer the full text of the Thinking in PostScript book on-line as an Adobe Acrobat (pdf) file. At some point we make it available as HTML as well, but need to upgrade FrameMaker first.

A friend saw the blue plastic chute on our extended chicken coop winter hoop greenhouse sun room for the hens and their gentleman friend. They have a light that gives them extended hours which helps with the Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD) that bothers chickens so much during our long dark winters. There are still four hens out in the south field who have not come in yet. I know the trees where they roost and will go chicken pickin one of these nights. Did you know that if you rub a stick in front of a chicken that is high up in a tree it will step onto the stick so you can then bringing it down to it put away? All calm and cozy. Pretty cool, huh! Will figured that out.

Unsourced material may be challenged and removed (May 2008) A postscript , abbreviated P.S. , is writing added after the main body of a letter (or other body of writing). The term comes from the Latin post scriptum , an expression meaning "written after" (which may be interpreted in the sense of "that which comes after the writing"). A postscript may be a sentence, a paragraph, or occasionally many paragraphs added, often hastily and incidentally, after the signature of a letter or (sometimes) the main body of an essay or book. In a book or essay, a more carefully-composed addition (e.g., for a second edition) is called an afterword . An afterword, not usually called a postscript, is written in response to critical remarks on the first edition. The word "postscript" has, poetically, been used to refer to any sort of addendum to some main work, even if not attached to a main work, as in Søren Kierkegaard 's book titled Concluding Unscientific Postscript Sometimes, when additional points are made after the first postscript, abbreviations such as PPS (post-post-scriptum, or postquam-post-scriptum) and PPPS (post-post-post-scriptum, and so on
