An introduction to PostScript
The PostScript programming language is designed to describe the layout of graphics and text on the printed page. Its history is a good example of the intersection of theory and marketplace that drives so much of software design. We'll take a look at the language for two reasons. From a practical standpoint, it can be an effective way to define geometric forms and text for inclusion in our digital imagery. But the PostScript language is also based on a fundamentally different programming paradigm than Python. Software design can be more varied than you would suspect simply by learning a single programming language. The following is a brief description of some PostScript concepts that will serve as an introduction to other tutorials and resources on the Web:

Digital Synergy, Inc. (DSI) is a software consulting company that provides software support services and application development for OpenVMS on Itanium, Alpha or Vax systems. We also provide Suse Linux system support on Intel processors. We have been helping businesses for over 35 years to evaluate their technological needs and to implement cost effective solutions. DSI is proud to be an HP Authorized Business Development partner for Itanium based systems and a Digium reseller for VOIP products. These relationship allows us to sell complete hardware and software solutions. We specialize in secure Internet data access solutions and have developed secure web services that meet the new standards for on-line credit card processing. We also provide application migration services from Vax and Alpha to Itanium. In addition we have successfully converted many other systems to OpenVMS. In addition our development system contains a framework that allows Java applications and Web users to efficiently access OpenVMS RMS databases and existing applications without the overhead and limitations of converting the data to a relational model or a major software rewrite. Our latest service is we now support Asterisk as either a stand alone phone systems or integrated with OpenVMS.

The Postscript Programming Language
A tutorial introduction to PostScript
By Gregor Koomey, Albany, New York Note: Source code files accompanying article are located on MacTech CD-ROM or source code disks. This article is a tutorial introduction to PostScript programming in the Macintosh environment. We begin with a description of the context and form of the language, then ease into a practical explication of the concepts of the PostScript graphics and computational models (using examples that you are actually expected to type in and send to a printer or emulator), finishing up with a mild discussion of appropriate hardware and software (including books).
A Little Context
The Macintosh brought to the marketplace a user interface that defined everything as a raster graphic, including text. As such, it was fairly simple to introduce multiple typefaces for use in this WYSIWYG environment, each represented by a sequence of bitmap designs. Unfortunately, size constraints allow only a few screen and dot-matrix printer fonts to be stored as bitmaps on a floppy based system. If multiple sizes, or higher resolution printing are desired, too much disk space is required.

Postscript programming?
I see the Postscript is the twentieth most popular programming language :-)
Methinks that this list needs to take account of whether or not a programming language is used directly or generated from another program.
Yes, I was that nutcase who strapped a 300 baud dumb terminal to an Apple Laserwriter with a view to drawing wireframe teapots by programming the beast in Postscript directly.
I eventually got my teapots by writing programs (in Pascal as it happens - 17th on the list) that wrote out the Postscript program to a text file.
On the output side of programs that write programs is the natural home of Postscript.
