Chapter 2: Pre-Raphaelite People and Principles
Led by the mercurial and passionate painter poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the Pre-Raphaelites stirred up a ruckus in mid-Victorian London. Their purpose: to restore integrity to British Art, which they believed had become banal and corrupt.
Headstrong and young (Rossetti was twenty when the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood came together in 1848), they scorned conventionality in their case, the 'Rules for Painting' promulgated by the Royal Academy of Art and its founder, Sir Joshua Reynolds. Sir Joshua had been dead since 1792, but his 'Rules' lived on. Based on the work of Sir Joshua's hero, the Renaissance painter Raphael, they specified every detail of picture creation. Young artists were thus relieved of the need to think at all. As William Blake, little read in 1848 except by the Pre-Raphaelites, noted in a scathing critique "On the Foundation of the Royal Academy":
"You say their pictures well-painted be

Thomas Cooper Gotch The Pre-Raphaelites Between 1825 and 1860, life in England underwent profound changes as a result of the Industrial Revolution. In a country soon to be transformed by coal and steel production and its peripheral side effects of poverty and pollution, the luminous, sharply focused paintings of the Pre-Raphaelites provided a form of escape. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was formed in 1848 by William Holman Hunt Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-82), and John Everett Millais (1829-96). They were later joined by others, including Ford Madox Brown (1821-93) and Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-98). They initially signed their works with the initials PRB, causing much controversy and scandal. The champion of the movement, however, was writer and critic

Botticelli and the Pre-Raphaelites
Unlike his contemporary, Raphael, who was known for his more accurate way of painting the human body, Botticelli's work takes considerable artistic license. If you look closely, you'll immediately notice that the length of the Venus' neck has been dramatically exaggerated. Moreover, her left arm (your right) looks like it's practically falling off! This is perhaps one of the major reasons that Botticelli's work was nearly forgotten after his death.
It's hard to imagine that there was ever a time when this painting was practically unknown. But it was nearly forgotten in the wake of Botticelli's death and Raphael's popularity (along with Leonardo and Michelangelo). As time went on, art critics ignored Botticelli's work, which was regarded as inferior and unrealistic. He was "rediscovered" in the 19th century bysurprise, surprisethe Pre-Raphaelites.
Botticelli's anatomically imaginative work made him the enemy of the art establishment, who thought he was merely careless. But these same perceived shortcomings endeared Botticelli to the Pre-Raphaelites in general, and Sir Edward Coley Burne Jones in particular (Levey, 299), who was impressed by the way Botticelli masterfully blended the pagan and Christian traditions within his artwork. Burne-Jones spoke often about his love for Botticelli, and his enthusiasm seems to have been contagious. William Michael Rossetti purchased one of Botticelli's drawings in 1867 (which later turned out to be a fake, but, oh well. At least he had been turned on to the artist). By the beginning of the 20th century, Botticelli's popularity had risen to such meteoric levels that "between 1900 and 1920, more books were published on Botticelli were printed than any other great painter"(291). This was due in a large part due to the enthusiasm of the Pre-Raphaelites.

The Painting That Started it All and Came Full Circle
This inspired me to dress up as this Ophelia for Halloween one year with one of my art students who wanted to dress up like one of my art dolls. I think she did a really good job!
The doll she was trying to dress as was the first art doll I ever made. Her name? Ophelia!
Recently, I have started doing digital self-portrait photographs. I took these two photograph of myself as The more photographs I took, the more I studied the Pre-Raphealites. The self portrait photograph below is part of my "Prosperine" series which was inspired by Dante Gabriel Rossit's painting above also called "Proserpine"
His imagine and my photograph inspired me to make another one of my art dolls(at this time I had made hundreds of them and learned a lot). She was to be a gift for a once dear friend, but ended up in show instead. (She is in just the beginning phase of getting her costume and hair together in this photo, but now she is done-more photographs to come!)
Then, after many years of being inspired and making pieces of my own, I was given the opportunity to curate an Art show in which I asked all the artists to do their own take on the Pre-Raphealites. It was so exciting to see what each artist came up with in their own style!
