If you are eating a well-balanced diet before you become pregnant, you will only need to make a few changes to meet the nutritional needs of pregnancy.
Gaining weight is a normal and important for your health during your pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters (the 14th week through the end of pregnancy). Most women gain a normal amount of weight by eating health diet, being energetic, and allowing their appetite to guide their food intake. During my three pregnancies, I gained an average of 30 pounds each pregnancy.
Doctors generally recommend general guidelines for eating a healthy diet during pregnancy. Your diet should include the basic nutrients necessary to meet the needs of the developing fetus inside your womb. You should try not to eat too much junk food, because it provides little nutrients and more empty calories. If you are not consuming a healthy diet, pregnancy is a good time to start.
You may ask yourself the question, why should I eat healthy?

Nutrition and pregnancy refers to the nutrient intake, and dietary planning that is undertaken before, during and after pregnancy. All dietary advice relating to pregnancy-related nutrition is noted by Mary E. Barasi as one of the major factors in determining the future well-being of a child conceived, some factors of a diet are even noted to reduce childhood morbidity and mortality due to helping the supply of nutrients to the mother. In a precursory study into the link between nutrition and pregnancy in 1950 women who consumed minimal amounts over the eight week period had a higher mortality or disorder rate concerning their offspring than women who ate regularly, because children born to well-fed mothers had less restriction within the womb. Not only have physical disorders been linked with poor nutrition before and during pregnancy, but neurological disorders and handicaps are a risk that is run by mothers who are malnourished, a condition which can also lead to the child becoming more susceptible to later degenerative disease(s).

Factors associated with Macrosomia - Pregnancy and Nutrition - Brief Article
    Nutrition Research Newsletter March, 2002
Gestational diabetes affects approximately 4 percent of all pregnant women, resulting in approximately 135,000 pregnancies affected by this disease. Complications of gestational diabetes for the fetus and newborn include hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia, erythremia, and macrosomia. Macrosomia, elevated birth weight or more specifically birth weight for a full-term infant greater than the 90th percentile for gestational age or higher than 4000 gram, is the most common of these complications and can cause delivery complications for neonates, including shoulder dystocia, clavicle fractures, and brachial plexus injury. It has been found that rates of macrosomia are between 14 percent and 18 percent when a mother with gestational diabetes receives basic nutritional counseling along with glucose monitoring. However, without any form of therapy, rates of macrosomia can be as high as 30-44 percent. Since there is minimal information on treatment methods for gestational diabetes, two researchers from the University of Florida set out to determine the rate of macrosomia in a population of women with gestational diabetes and factors associated with risk of delivering a child with macrosomia.

There are other ways to do it if you are vegetarian, vegan, eat low fat, or don't like/tolerate a particular food. Please see the books referenced at the end for more details on substituting foods! Recognizing early symptoms of pregnancy can help women seek early prenatal care, which is important for both the mother and her developing baby. Questions to Ask Your Doctor about Your Pregnancy (For Teens)
(Free Handout) Pregnant women must eat well and are encouraged to eat a variety of foods. Weight gain is a normal and healthy part of pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters (i.e., the 14th week through the end of pregnancy). Most women gain a normal amount of weight by eating healthfully, staying active, and allowing their appetite to guide their food intake. Physicians usually recommend general guidelines for healthy eating. The pregnant woman's diet should be include the basic nutrients necessary to meet the demands of the developing fetus. Junk food should be avoided, because it provides little more than empty calories. For women who normally do not follow a healthy diet, pregnancy is a good time to start. Healthy eating helps ensure that the baby will have a healthy birth weight and will not be born with infections or other problems, reduces the risk for premature birth, builds up fats and fluids for use during breastfeeding, and reduces the risk for complications during pregnancy. It is also important that women continue to eat well after the birth, especially if the baby is

THE EFFECT OF DIVORCE ON YOUR CHILDREN
Posted on January 12, 2010
Filed Under child care Leave a Comment A study suggests that children are better off with two unhappy parents than with divorced parents. However, the research gives no indication of the different divorce situations that are critical in determining the effect on the children. An amicable divorce may be barely damaging and its effect entirely different .from that of a bitter, acrimonious divorce. The main reason for this is that in an acrimonious situation, each parent usually does his or her best to turn the children against the other parent. This has a very negative and damaging effect on children, and should be avoided at all costs. ACCESS If your partner is consistently late or unreasonable, arrange a separate meeting to discuss this, out of being kidnapped or otherwise harmed. In such cases it is best to seek professional advice, either through counseling services or a lawyer.

DIVORCE
If you reach the point where the only option left is divorce or separation, do not assume automatically that your children will be devastated. Some will be, but the effect on your child will depend greatly on age, personality, the circumstances of the divorce, and the prevailing social attitudes in the school and community.

This message is for all women of childbearing age, mothers-to-be, and growing families everywhere. We will discuss perhaps the three most important phases of nutrient requirements that determine an individuals lifelong health and nutrition status; Pregnancy, lactation, and infancy. We normally think of our nutrition as personal, affecting only our own lives. This isn't always the case though. The woman who is pregnant, or who may be, must understand that her nutrition today will be critical to the health of her child throughout life. The nutrition demands of pregnancy are extraordinary because the growth of a whole new person requires all the minerals and other nutrients, and most in larger amounts. Before Pregnancy Before becoming pregnant, a woman must establish nutrition habits that will optimally nourish both the growing fetus, and herself. She must be well nourished at the outset because in early pregnancy the embryo undergoes rapid and significant developmental changes that depend on her prior balance of minerals, vitamins, and other nutrition concerns. Fathers-to-be are also encouraged to consider their nutrition status. Some evidence suggests that men who consume too few vitamins and minerals, or who drink too much alcohol before conception may damage their sperm's genetic material. This damage can cause birth defects in future children.

Despite the common nausea that sweeps over women who find themselves pregnant, proper nutrition remains essential to both mother and baby throughout the entire pregnancy. In the first trimester, through 12 weeks gestation, many expectant moms experience nausea which may hit them in the morning, mid-day or even in the evening. For these difficult times, crackers make good snacks to get through the period when no food is the best food. One nutritional way to combat "morning sickness" during pregnancy is to eat a protein snack before bedtime, like cheese or peanut butter. This will help the rough mornings when eating is the last thing on your mind, while also supplying essential nutrients to your growing baby. Protein is one of the most important considerations in planning meals during a pregnancy. A growing baby requires lots of nutrition from its mother to make it to term. Frequently, preterm deliveries can be traced back to an inadequate diet and thus a baby is born early because it isn't thriving and growing inside its mother.
