Eyak was the language spoken by an Athabascan people group of the same name who lived in the Copper River Delta area, near present-day Cordova. The past tense is appropriate, because on January 21, 2008, Marie Smith Jones, the last native Eyak speaker, died. Today, the only person who could carry on a conversation in Eyak is Michael Krauss, a linguist living in Fairbanks.

Comet theory now screwing up normal research.
Local angle: Vanished culture left traces
Monday, June 04, 2007
BY TOM VOGT, Columbian staff writer
The Clovis culture was named after stone projectile points first
excavated in 1932 near Clovis, N.M., but some landmark examples of
Clovis craftsmanship were discovered 20 years ago near Wenatchee.
"In Washington, the Richey-Roberts site is our Clovis claim to fame,"
said Pat Lubinski, an archaeologist at Central Washington University.
The cache of prehistoric spearheads, stone knives and other artifacts
was found in 1987 when a work crew was digging a trench for sprinkler pipe in an East Wenatchee apple orchard, near the Columbia River. It's a long way from New Mexico to East Wenatchee, and the Clovis culture didn't have a lot of time to distribute itself across North America. According to a new study that links a comet explosion to animal extinctions - as well as the disappearance of one of the earliest American cultures - the Clovis hunters were around for only about 300 years.
