Jim here. We have just been given exclusive behind the scenes photos from the upcoming IMAX 3D release SEA REX: JOURNEY TO A PREHISTORIC WORLD which is set to hit the giant screens on May 7, 2010.
Love seeing the 3D equipment being used in shots like this! Should give us a great experience on the IMAX screens.
Here is their press release:
SEA REX: JOURNEY TO A PREHISTORIC WORLD takes viewers on a wondrous adventure through the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods in the company of an imaginative young woman and a mysterious scientist from the past to discover a fascinating underwater world populated by incredible creatures such as the powerful Liopleurodon, the long-necked Elasmosaurus, the ferocious Mosasaurus and the largest marine reptile ever known, the 75-foot Shonisaurus. Moviegoers will magically travel 200 million years back in time and encounter contemporary experts as they unveil the latest scientific findings and shed light on the pioneers of the science of paleontology.
SEA REX: JOURNEY TO A PREHISTORIC WORLD is produced by Pascal Vuong, Catherine Vuong and Francois Mantello. The screenplay is by Pascal Vuong and Rick Dowlearn. Original score by Frank Marchal. The worldwide distribution rights were acquired by 3D Entertainment Distribution in September 2009 from N3D LAND Productions, which initiated the project in 2005. In parallel, a co-production agreement was sealed with Mantello Brothers Productions.

There can be no more important field than for us to thus learn of the past. To read the story of primitive man, to walk with him the earth in ages long ago, with him to wage war on the huge animals of a previous epoch, to recede with him before the relentless march of the ice of the Glacial Age, to watch his advance in culture, to investigate whether there are any races of men now living which are the direct descendants of this primeval man. The author makes no claims to original investigations. He trusts, however, it will not be considered impertinent for a mere loiterer in the vestibule of the temple of science to attempt to lay before others the results of the investigations of our eminent scholars. He has endeavored faithfully to perform this task. As far as possible technical language has been avoided. This is because he has written not for the distinctively scientific men, but rather for the farmer, the mechanic, and the man of business. Constant referen Be the first to review this title!

Dinosaurs were so big because they were the "couch potatoes" of the prehistoric world, leading zoologist Dr Brian McNab has claimed.
Some dinosaurs reached masses that were at least eight times those of the largest, ecologically equivalent terrestrial mammals Photo: CHRISTOPHER PLEDGER By Chris Irvine 7:00AM BST 07 Jul 2009 Comments Having easy access to food, coupled with their sedentary lifestyle when not hunting, helped the creatures grow into the biggest beasts to have ever walked the earth, according to Dr McNab. Palaeontologists have argued that dinosaurs' size was in some way due to the way they regulated the temperature of their blood. Dr McNab, from the University of Florida, believes that the availability of food resources was more important, however. Using a model based on a vertebrate's energy expenditure, mass and eating habits, Dr McNab explained the body size of existing and extinct mammals, including baleen whales, an ancient rhinoceros and modern elephants. He used the example of the larger mass found in some marine mammals which reflect greater resources in their environment. Related Articles

Palaeogeography
Palaeogeography is the geography of the Earth in ancient times, so tries to establish the arrangement of the continents back through time.
There had been a time when the continents were different, Rincewind understood, and then they'd sort of shuffled more comfortably together, like puppies in a basket"
("Sourcery", Terry Pratchett)
Palaeogeography is a science that becomes harder the further back we go, as evidence is lost 'in the mists of time', and into the interior of the Earth. However; its study has produced many lines of evidence which have led to the construction of a sequence of theoretical maps, showing how the Earth looked in prehistoric times. Whilst different map sequences show differences caused by uncertainties in many areas, we have high confidence in the overall picture presented. This section covers a brief overview of the 'dance of the continents' in Mesozoic to Cenozoic times, and is illustrated with plate tectonic maps by C. R. Scotese, from the PALEOMAP Project (www.scotese.com)

Archaic (prehistoric) world history
Hartford Web Publishing is not the author of the documents in World History Archives [The term archaic is used here in order to counter the devaluation implied by the term prehistory relative to history and to reduce any implication of a funamental break between the palæolithic and neolithic. It implies a system in which life is subsumed under culture.]
Fossil Find Aids Evolution Study
By Curt Suplee, Washington Post , Friday 27 August 1999. A 15 million-year-old skeleton unearthed in Kenya belongs to a previously unknown animal type that may be a sort of great-uncle of our oldest direct relative. The recent find predates by several million years the long-sought last common ancestor that great apes and humans had before each of those groups diverged and developed separately. By Ivan Noble, BBC News, Wednesday 10 July 2002. Recently unearthed human-like skull which is being described as the most important find of its type in living memory. The newly discovered skull in Chad comes from a time when the creatures which were to become modern humans had not long diverged from the line that would become chimpanzee. It finally puts to rest any idea that there might be a single missing link between humans and chimpanzees.

Atlas of the Prehistoric World
by Douglas Palmer Discovery Channel Books , 1999, 224 p.
ISBN 1-56331-829-6, $35.00
This abundantly-illustrated book from Discovery Books is both readable by the general public and a pleasure for a university geological educator like me. The first segment, the Changing Globe, is the atlas which gives the work its name, covering the last 620 million years in earth's history in 18 double-page computer renderings which show land and sea, mountains and lowlands, and major global plate boundaries. The arrangement of the hemispheres, including modern continental positions in red and a mini-whole-world projection for each map, is helpful in getting oriented, particularly for those times when a hypothetical visitor in an orbiting time machine would not be able to recognize which modern continent or continental fragment was which. Each map has a Precambrian-to-present time line across its top to clarify exactly the time in earth history from which the glimpse of the past is taken and paragraphs covering special events for the period and their locations. I have a basic familiarity with the continental arrangements through time, but found myself paging through and looking at the maps for fun. This is a great reference for orienting freshman students to global changes throughout earth history and for an introduction to the sequence of life history. It would also be a good choice for parents of upper elementary school and older children.

Aussie Hunter in Cretaceous - Australovenator -
Australovenator is the first large carnivorous dinosaur ever found in Australia . The fossils were discovered in the Winton Formation located in north east Australia Australovenator is the Allosauroid dinosaur lived in the Early Cretaceous period. The height is probably about 2m (6.6ft) and the length is approximately 6m (20ft). It was not mega predator like Tyrannosaurs but perhaps a light weight swift hunter. So the medium size dinosaur like Hypsilophodonts might be the prey for Australovenator
Jack the Lizard The fossils of other species are also found from the Winton Formation , such as Diamantinasaurus which is long-neck saurischian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, crocodilians, turtles, lungfish and some plants.
Colossal tooth - Megalodon -
This is Megalodon , not great white shark. Megalodon was cruising in warm water of worldwide ocean from 20 to 1.5million years ago. The size is about 60ft (18m) long and the tooth is 7in (18cm) in length. Probably this gigantic predator did not have natural enemies except own species.

Pure awesomeness See all my reviews I love this video hosted by Gary Owens and Eric Boardman. It features these guys going to places around the world and talking about prehistoric mammals. We learn about sabre- toothed cats, dire wolves, tiny horses and lots else. There are also a bunch of weird guys who show up along the way, including a guy who claims to be Raymond J. Johnson, Jr. (you can call me Ray, or you can call me Jay...), and a guy who horrifies a young boy with his graphic description of animals getting stuck in the La Brea tar pits. But my favorite part is at the end when Dougal Dixon, author of the book After Man: A Zoology of the Future, shows us what he thinks animals may look like 50 million years in the future, like wolf-like predator rats, deer-shaped bunnies, and terrifying 5-foot-tall flightless bats!
