Home Library Religion The Presbyterian Church, although divided into many denominations, traces its ancestry back to the Protestant Reformation (See Christianity, Development of ). It began with Martin Luther, but some twenty years after he posted his famous Ninety-five Theses, John Calvin (See Calvin, John, and Jacobus Arminius ) laid the basis for the theology that shapes the various Presbyterian churches existing today. John Knox studied with Calvin and took his theology first to Geneva and then, after a political exile, back to Scotland, where the first Presbyterian Church was formed. Presbyterian doesn't refer to theology as much as it does to church polity. There isn't a lot of theological difference, for instance, between Presbyterians and Congregationalists (See Congregationalism ). But there is a world of difference in the way the political hierarchy of the two churches work. Presbyterians are set up, politically, much the same way as the representative government of the United States. Individual churches elect representatives (presbyters) who represent them at a higher level (the presbytery). The presbytery owns the church buildings and has a say in who ministers to the local congregations. It, in turn, is responsible to the synod, elected from the various presbyteries. The presbytery does not go so far as to appoint bishops or individual ministers. The local church session has a lot of say in those matters. The highest elected body is the assembly, which serves the same kind of function as the U.S. Congress. So the Presbyterian political organization of representative government is somewhere in between an Episcopal system and a Congregationalist system.

Help: How to Contribute Presbyterian refers to a branch of Protestant denominations derived from the Reformed churches of the Reformantion, which have a presbyterian form of church governance. Presbyterian churches are historically calvinistic in theology. Presbyterianism traces its institutional roots back to the Scottish Reformation, especially as led by John Knox . There are many separate Presbyterian Churches around the world. Besides national distinctions, Presbyterians also have divided from one another for doctrinal reasons, especially in the wake of the Enlightenment Multimedia

http://www.biblehistory.com/Presbyterian.html
Presbyterians The Presbyterian Church If the average American citizen were asked, Who was the founder of America? He would undoubtedly hesitate to reply. A Presbyterian, however, and with considerable justification, might point to the answer given by Ranke, the famous German historian: "John Calvin was the virtual founder of America."
To back up this assertion about their famed theologian, Presbyterians might point out that at the time of the American Revolution two thirds of the population were trained in the schools of Calvin, where they learned the immortal principles of the rights of man, of human liberty, equality, and self-government on which they based our republic. Their intense zeal for liberty was so pronounced that the colonists' struggle for freedom was called, in England, "The Presbyterian Rebellion." Presbyterians are proud that one of their ministers, John Witherspoon, was the only clergyman who signed the Declaration of Independence.
John Calvin, who may be called the ablest expounder of their doctrinal views, was a Frenchman trained for the law; however, his keen legalistic mind and his lust for religious freedom drove him to Geneva, Switzerland, where he quickly grasped the reins of leadership in the Swiss sector of the Reformation. His whole thought revolved about the concept of sovereignty: "the sovereignty of God in His universe, the sovereignty of Christ in salvation, the sovereignty of the Scriptures in faith, and conduct, the sovereignty of the individual conscience in the interpretation of the will and Word of God."
