Dysart expands preschool special-needs classes
by Sherry Anne Rubiano - Mar. 8, 2010 02:39 PM
The Arizona Republic The Dysart Unified School District plans to offer additional special-needs services for preschool students. Call the district at 623-876-7000 for more information.
ABOUT THE CLASSES The new classes will be held at Desert Moon School, 23251 N. 166th Drive, near Grand and 163rd avenues. The classes are free. Special-needs preschool classes are offered at the Dysart Early Childhood Education Center. Extra classes are being added due to an increase in the number of special-needs students the district is serving at the preschool age, said Jim Dean, Dysart spokesman. FUNDING The district will be able to pay for the additional classes through education funding under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the Federal Preschool Grant, the State Preschool Block Grant, and federal economic stimulus monies. SCREENINGS The district conducts free monthly screenings for non-kindergarten children living in the district ages, 2.6 to 5 with possible special needs or handicaps to determine whether they qualify for special-needs classes. The screenings are held at the Dysart Early Childhood Education Center, 17999 W. Surprise Farms Loop South, in Surprise. Remaining screening dates for the 2009-10 school year are Monday, April 12, May 17 and June 28. For more information or to schedule a special-needs screening appointment, call 623-876-7000.
