What Makes a Primate
Linnaeus first described the order Primates for classification purposes
Primates have the following traits:
Primates are adapted to life in the trees (arboreal adaptation)
Primates eat a variety of foods (dietary plasticity)
Primates invest a lot in a few offspring (parental investment) no notes exist for this slide

Nonhuman Primates General Primates should be housed in separate rooms from nonprimate species (rodents, carnivores, farm animals, etc.). Prosimians, simians, and apes should be housed

Common Marmoset
General Information
Habitat and Distribution
Marmosets and tamarins are found primarily in the tropical rainforests of South America with a few remnant populations located in Central America. The common marmoset is distributed throughout the Atlantic Coastal Forest of northeastern Brazil.
  • Translocated populations of the common marmoset also flourish in the ranges of other Brazilian marmoset and tamarin species, such as around Rio de Janiero, well beyond their native coastal forests.
The home range of a marmoset group can vary from 5,000 to 65,000 square meters (1.2-16 acres). On any one day a marmoset group will travel about 500 to 1000 meters. The common marmoset is entirely arboreal (tree dwelling) and prefers secondary or disturbed forests and edge habitat.
  • This species may also be found in coastal and upland scrub forest, gallery forests and even gardens and parks of South American cities, such as Natal and Joao Pessoa. Wherever they are found, their home range will typically include a variety of habitat types.

Welcome to the
International Primate Protection League
We are a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the world's remaining primates, great and small. We concentrate on:
  • offering advisory and financial support for activities that help monkeys and apes, both in the U.S. and overseas; granting financial assistance for programs that protect primates and their habitat within their native countries; publicizing the plight of primates in trouble and organizing international protest campaigns; conducting investigations of illegal international primate trafficking; and operating a sanctuary for rescued gibbon apes in South Carolina.
IPPL is a registered 501(c)(3) U.S. charity that cares about making the best use of our friends' donations to benefit primates worldwide.
Highlighted Items
Help our Friends: Aketi, Pulito and Squeeky who must rely on the care provided by grassroots rescue centers that work on a shoestring budget.

Major Interest Areas
The goals of CARTA are essentially scholarly, with an emphasis on minimization of unnecessary organizational structures, hierarchies, paperwork and bureaucracy. The major interests of the group are:
  • Defining and explaining the evolutionary origins of humans (e.g., understanding the events of the last 15 million years of great ape and human evolution).

Getting to St Andrews
Primates
General details about how to get to St Andrews are available here . The following information may be of assistance:
  • Many of you will be travelling to St Andrews via Edinburgh. If arriving at Edinburgh airport, you can continue your journey either by car or rail. Car hire and taxis are available at the airport.
If continuing your journey by rail you can either take a taxi or bus to the city centre train stations, Haymarket and Waverley. Waverley is the main station but all the trains to Leuchars, the nearest train station to St Andrews, will stop at Haymarket too, which is more convenient for some connections. Train time schedules available on-line at: the National Rail website , you don't need to buy tickets in advance, but if you would like to you can do so at www.firstscotrail.com

A Primate order lies in a pinching bunch of related orders (the Euarchontoglires) within a Eutheria, a subclass of Mammalia. Recent molecular hereditary search in primates, flying lemurs, and tree shrews has shown that the two mintage of flying lemur (Dermoptera) are further closely related a primates than the tree shrews of the sequentially Scandentia, even though a tree shrews were at once considered primates. These tierce orders produce higher a Euarchonta clade. This clade combines by using a Glires clade (made higher of the Rodentia and Lagomorpha Lagomorpha Primates Inside modern, cladistic reckonings, the Primate the correct sequence is likewise a avowedly clade.
