About Us Support the Monkeys News Contact Us
The Sanctuary
It all started in the year of 1992. Entering my life came an adult rhesus macaque called "Mindy Sue". Age unknown, small for her species and severely under weight, Mindy was to change my life in ways I could never imagine. In Mindy's memory, the sanctuary was founded and built to what it has become today. To give a chance at a freer life for those who find us.
Magnificent Eight Arrive!
More than 50 macaque monkeys kept at a research lab located in Warren County, NJ, suddenly found themselves without a place to live when the facility closed due to bankruptcy. Four primate sanctuaries offered to provide permanent residence for the displaced macaques. Mindy's Memory welcomed eight of the refugees. Monkeying Around at Explorit Science Center Visitors can expect to receive an activity book to take home, and to do activities such as making monkey masks, trying on protective research clothing, and learning a little about their own bodies. Primates are our closest relatives, which make them all the more interesting to study. The CNPRC focuses on four areas of research with its 4,700 monkeys: infectious disease and immunology; respiratory biology and disease; reproduction and development; and behavior and neuroscience. The presentation at Explorit will include activity stations that relate to the respiratory research, a set of pig lungs to investigate lung function and smoking, and behavior, looking at primate communication.

IN THE NEWS . Acting on a tip, KDFWR Law Enforcement officers obtained a court order and removed the animals from the private residence. It has been illegal since 2005 to import a long list of inherently dangerous animals to the Commonwealth - including ALL non-human primates. Too fragile for KY's cold winters, the marmosets will be transported to Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary in Gainesville, FL where they will live out their lives in the company of other marmosets. Orangutan distribution Orangutans are among the most intelligent primates and use a variety of sophisticated tools, also making sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. They are generally not aggressive and live a mostly solitary life foraging for food. They are the largest living arboreal animals with longer arms than other great apes. Their hair is typically reddish-brown, instead of the brown or black hair typical of other great apes. Native to Indonesia and Malaysia , orangutans are currently found only in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra , though fossils have been found in Java , the Thai-Malay Peninsula Vietnam and China . There are only two surviving species, both of which are

Gorilla Help Site
Fewer than 650 mountain gorillas and 40,000 lowland gorillas are left in the world. Their existence continues to be threatened as increasing human populations continue to decrease the gorillas' habitats. Gentle and intelligent creatures, gorillas are more closely-related to humankind than many would expect. In August, the siverback you see on the picture was shot to death while he was trying to prevent the kidnapping of the baby sitting on his back. That such a futile tragedy can happen in this day and age is an outrage. Find out more about these wonderful animals, and help us ensure their survival.
This section is a public service provided by Kilimanjaro Adventure Travel to provide the public with much needed information about gorillas. If you have additional information, links, or suggestions for improvement, please send us an email. Thanks in advance!

The Indriidae (sometimes incorrectly spelled Indridae ) are a family of strepsirrhine primates . They are medium to large sized lemurs with only four teeth in the toothcomb instead of the usual six. Indriids , like all lemurs, live exclusively on the island of Madagascar The group was once much larger, and, in addition to the thirteen species living today, also contains eleven extinct species in six genera. Most if not all were larger animals , called 'sloth lemurs'. These included the
