Scientists dismayed by BA animal ban Airline stops all live trade for use in experiments

British Airways has been accused of setting back medical research in the UK by enforcing a blanket ban on the transport of live animals for use in experiments. Government officials and leading scientists have expressed their dismay to the airline about the toughening of its stance which they fear will send the wrong message to scientists and pharmaceutical companies involved in animal testing, and could encourage s extremists who have been running a high-profile campaign to shut down the live animal trade.
Department of Trade and Industry officials are understood to have raised their concerns with senior BA management after the airline's decision not to accept the carriage of primates, wild birds or other live caught animals "for use in any laboratory or for experimen tation or exploitation". Colin Blakemore, chief executive of the Medical Research Council, has also questioned the message it sends to people suffering from conditions that could be treated through advances in medical research.
BA's policy coincides with a campaign by extremists targeting executives from the airports company BAA and airlines such as Air France and Air Mauritius. In February the cars of five BAA executives were vandalised and the message "You are now a target for us" was sprayed on one executive's Surrey home.

Beating the Bushmeat Business
Swapping Guns for Schools, Sightseers by Lynne R. Baker
Aduet, a male Mona rescued from riding on a truck with his owner
Titus, a young red-eared guenon It's no secret that unsustainable hunting and habitat destruction have had a formidable impact on the flora and fauna of the world. Consider what's happening to the earth's jungles: one acre of tropical rainforest is destroyed in the world every second. And in the case of nonhuman primates, wild populations are in danger in all of the 92 countries in which these animals occur, according to Conservation International. Thanks to aircraft surveys and satellite images, the effects of habitat destruction can be more easily measured and seen. But on a more fundamental level, how does one assess the number of animals killed by hunters and poachers every day? In West Africa, actual numbers are almost impossible to come by, but what is obvious is that the bushmeat trade is big business. Primate populations have suffered greatly due to habitat loss from logging, farming and the live-capture-for-export trade, but it is the bushmeat trade that is generally considered to be the No. 1 killer of primates in West Africa.

  • How much B12 is enough?
  • Sources of B12
  • B12 and natural diet: where do other primates get their B12?
  • Testing for B12
  • Conclusions
The role of B12 and folate
B12 along with folate is required to convert homocysteine to methionine. If this conversion is blocked then homocysteine levels rise, driving SAH levels up and blocking vital methylation reactions. These methylation reactions are required to:
  • Stabilise DNA, RNA and proteins
  • Produce neuro-transmitters
  • Produce Coenzyme Q (antioxidant)
  • Eliminate toxins such as pyridine and arsenic
If folate is deficient and DNA synthesis is directly retarded causing enlarged red blood cells (megaloblastic anaemia) and impairing methylation.

An Empty Gesture to Soothe the Conscience: Why We Pass Laws Protecting Chimpanzees And Other Animals from Cruelty
By SHERRY F. COLB
Wednesday, March 4, 2009 On February 17th, a pet chimpanzee living in Connecticut violently attacked his owner's friend. The attack ended in horrifying injury to the friend and in the chimpanzee's being shot by the police and eventually bleeding to death. In the wake of this disturbing event, the House of Representatives passed a bill called the "Captive Primate Safety Act," which would outlaw the interstate transport of nonhuman primates to be used as pets. The matter is pending in the Senate. Animal Cruelty Legislation: Its History and Possible Purposes The Nineteenth Century marked the beginning of modern anti-cruelty legislation, with the passage in the U.K. of Richard Martin's Act, providing penalties for cruelty toward cows, sheep, and other similar domestic animals. Following that law, there have been many others, protecting a variety of nonhuman species from specific forms of mistreatment within and outside of the food industry. It was under a law falling within this tradition, for example, that Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison for his participation in the brutal sport of dog-fighting. In a fascinating paper available here , Pace University law professor Luis Chiesa identifies and analyzes the various purposes that might potentially animate anti-cruelty laws. He discusses four in particular and elaborates the degree of fit that he finds between these putative purposes and the laws in question. The four purposes are, roughly: (1) protection of property rights (of animals' owners); (2) apprehension of dangerous people (whose dangerousness to fellow human beings is made manifest in their mistreatment of nonhuman animals): (3) promoting the moral sensibilities of those who feel that animal cruelty is immoral; and (4) protecting potential animal victims from harm.

edit History
In October 1986, ME's Zoo cofounder Max Oren was diagnosed with aplastic anemia . Believing the following Christmas season could be his last, Max's friends and neighbors decorated his property with over 10,000 Christmas lights . Many people drove by to see this light display. Oren was confined to bed starting in January 1987 during treatments for his disease. During that time, he enjoyed watching his pet deer and donkeys grazing outside his window. This led to the idea of starting a zoo. ME's Zoo opened to the public in May 1988. The name came from the initials of Oren and his wife's first names: Max and Eileen. The current owners were Eileen Oren and Bob Taylor.
