    Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island , smallest province of Canada . It is one of the Maritime provinces (along with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia ) and one of the Atlantic provinces (the Maritimes plus Newfoundland and Labrador ). The island resembles a crescent, and it lies in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence between 15 and 32 km (9 and 20 mi) from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia across Northumberland Strait. The provincial capital and largest city is Charlottetown . The province is named for Edward Augustus, duke of Kent and Strathern, a son of George III of Great Britain. Many of the islanders are farmers, carrying on a mixed livestock and crop agriculture. The fact that almost one million acres, or nearly three-fourths of the island, was once farmland has given it the nicknames of the Million-Acre Farm and the Garden of the Gulf. Potatoes are a major crop. Physical Geography Prince Edward Island has an area of 5660 sq km (2185 sq mi). There are virtually no inland bodies of fresh water. It is about 230 km (about 140 mi) long and from 6 to 60 km (4 to 40 mi) wide. The shoreline is indented with long estuaries, and along the southern and eastern coasts deeply embayed river mouths offer excellent harbors, such as that of Charlottetown. The northern coast has an almost continuous line of dunes and sandbars that block the harbor entrances. Landforms Prince Edward Island lies in a portion of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence Plain, which is a subdivision of the Appalachian Region, the physiographic province that dominates eastern North America. Structurally, the Gulf of Saint Lawrence Plain is a low basin that blankets all of the island.

    Northumberland Strait
The Northumberland Strait is a strait in the southern part of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in eastern North America . It separates the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island from the mainland provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia The western boundary of the strait is delineated by a line running between North Cape, Prince Edward Island and Point Escuminac, New Brunswick while the eastern boundary is delineated by a line running between East Point, Prince Edward Island and Chéticamp, Nova Scotia The strait's shallow depths lend to warm water temperatures in summer months, with some areas reaching 25º C . Consequently the strait is reportedly home to the warmest ocean water temperatures in Canada, and some of the warmest ocean water temperatures on the Atlantic coast north of Virginia . During the winter months between December and April sea ice covers the entire strait and Gulf of St. Lawrence. While the shores of Cape Breton Island and eastern peninsular Nova Scotia are dominated by granite , sedimentary rocks along the central and western parts of the strait, as well as the entire south shore of Prince Edward Island, consist of sandstone , lending to beautiful sandy beaches with minimal coastal development. The largest island in the strait is
