edit Early history
Prince Edward Island was originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq people. They named the island Epekwitk (the pronunciation of which was changed to Abegweit by the Europeans), meaning "resting on the waves." They believed that the island was formed by the Great Spirit placing some dark red clay which was shaped as a crescent on the pink Waters.
edit French Colony
As part of the French colony of Acadia , and, after , the French colony of ÃŽle Royale , the island was called ÃŽle Saint-Jean . The Island began to be settled in 1720. The settlers lived primarily at Port-la-Jolie and Havre Saint-Pierre (St. Peter's Habour). At Port-la-Jolie there was an administrative unit and a garrison, detached from Louisbourg, where sat the government for both Ile Royale and Ile Saint-Jean. While new settlements were established along the Rivier-du-Nord-Est and at Malpec, Havre Saint-Pierre remained the largest population throughout the French occupation of the Island. After the establishment of Halifax (1749), many more Acadians began to migrate to the Island. The population increased dramatically from 735 to approximately three thousand. New settlements began at Pointe-Prime, Bedec, and other places.

Prince Edward Island is a tiny, crescent shaped island, measuring 224 kilometers from tip to tip. It's gently rolling land runs between sea level to it's highest elevation of 450 feet. Summer day time temperatures range from 20 to 32 degrees C. (70 to 90 degrees F) Low humidity and a cool breeze makes perfect shirt sleeve weather. Winter temperatures range from -3 to -11 degrees C. (26 to 11 degrees F) Perfect conditions for a variety of winter sports. The Provincial Motto is: Parva Sub Ingenti (The small under the protection of the great). Canada's smallest province has a rich and wonderful history that has molded the culture we share today.
The Mi'kmaq were the first people to inhabit Prince Edward Island. They were a peaceful tribe, belonging to the Algonkian group. Not having permanent villages, they camped and fished along the shores during the summer. In the winter, they retreated into the forest where there was shelter, and hunted animals for food and clothing. The Mi'kmaq first called the Island Minegoo, and later changed the name to Abegweit, meaning "cradled on the waves." According to Mi'kmaq legend, Glooscap (the Indian God) wanted a cheerful place to go for his holidays, so he painted the rocks and earth of Abegweit a bright and cheerful red and set it among the brilliant blue waves of the Northumberland Strait.
The first white men to visit the Island were the Norsemen. These Vikings were a bold and hardy race of men who made daring sea-voyages in ships that stood high out of the water, bow and stern ending in the head and tail of some strange animal. Tales have been handed down from one generation to the next of their settlements along the coast of North America. However, these settlements were not permanent and eventually the Norsemen stopped coming, leaving America to remain uncolonized until it was rediscovered some five hundred years later.

Prince Edward Island History and Lineage - Trace Your Roots on the Island
In 1867 Prince Edward Island became the birthplace of a nation with the creation of Canada, and every year thousands return to the province in search of long lost family links. Renting cottages and digging into Prince Edward Island maps , people from all over the world come to look for genealogical links and long lost ancestors. Take, for instance, the example of Suzanne from Cincinnati, who came to PEI to search for links to long-lost family members. Suzanne knew her grandfather hailed from the island, but had left in the late 19th century and moved to the U.S. To her great surprise, they stopped at a historic site only to find an actor playing the role of a distant relative. “I told one of the staff that we were attempting to find our roots, based on the little information we remembered from our parents,” Suzanne says. “To our surprise, she said, ‘Well your grandfather is in the other room!’”
