Welcome to our home page. We hope it will have useful information and links both for prospective students and those already enrolled. Members of our department are active scholars who also give a great deal of attention to the quality of their teaching. We are proud that several members of the department have been recognized with teaching and scholarly achievement awards. A potential strength of a small university is that it affords opportunities to work closely with students. In our major, minor, and honours programs we strive to do this by giving individual attention to students from the introductory to the senior level. A new feature of our program is the Applied Public History Course, which exposes senior students to real-life work situations in local archives, museums, galleries, and the public service. The honours program has also been redesigned to allow students to complete the degree within four years of study. Our honours graduates have an impressive track record in graduate and professional schools. Should you need further information on our programs, or want advice on course selection, please feel free to drop in, phone, or contact any of us by e-mail.

Archeological evidence indicates that the area that includes what is now Prince Edward Island was inhabited as early as 8500 B.C. At the time of European discovery in the 16th century A.D., Micmac Indians, a nomadic hunting and fishing tribe, were living there. Jacques Cartier of France reached the island in 1534. In 1603, it was named ÃŽle St. Jean by Samuel de Champlain. The island was the site of fishing communities, but of little permanent settlement, until the treaties of Utrecht, signed in the period from 1713 to 1715, granted Acadia (Nova Scotia) to Great Britain. Many Acadians, wishing to remain under French rule, moved to the island. The British seized ÃŽle St. Jean in 1745 and held it for three years. In 1758, during the French and Indian War, they occupied it permanently, and most of the Acadians were dispersed. St. John's, as the island came to be known, was annexed to Nova Scotia in 1763. In 1769, it was made a separate colony, with Charlottetown as capital. Many Scots came to the colony in the 1770's, and a large number of Tory refugees from the United States settled there after the Revolutionary War. In 1798, the name was changed to Prince Edward Island. In 1803 the Earl of Selkirk settled 800 Scottish immigrants on the island.

It will be readily understood that in this he lays claim to no originality, the intention being to place the history in such a position as will be reached by all, and this object could not be more surely obtained than by giving it a place in the accompanying Directory. The Publisher would tender his grateful thanks to Rev. Victoria . The first permanent settlement was made by the French in 1719 near present-day Charlottetown, but the British gained control under the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Many French settlers were deported by the British (see Acadia ), but others remained; their descendants still live here. In 1803, Lord Selkirk's first colony of impoverished Scots settled here; persons of Scottish extraction now constitute about one third of the inhabitants. The Progressive Conservatives (or Conservatives) and the Liberals are the only parties to have formed provincial governments since 1873. In 1993, Catherine Callbeck, who led the Liberals to a sweep, became Canada's first female provincial premier. Progressive Conservative Patrick Binns became premier in 1996 and was returned to office in 2000 and 2003. In 2007 the Liberals won a majority, and Robert Ghiz became premier. The province sends 4 senators and 4 representatives to the national parliament. Sections in this article: The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia

Why PEI Potatoes? Just as connoisseurs of fine wine say they can taste the soil in which the grapes are grown, the Prince Edward Island potato has a flavour that is unique because of the Island's rich red soil.
If you could visualize the perfect place for growing potatoes, it would be Prince Edward Island, located on the east coast of Canada
The Island's rich sandy soil, clean air and water, its long cold winters, combined with the latest growing, storing and shipping techniques have given growers the ability to deliver excellent quality potatoes

What is History?
History, most simply, is the study of the past. However, it is also the “history of history” –historiography—the way in which we interpret that past. One of the most important lessons that history majors come away with is that the choices we make in the facts we present alter human interpretations of the past, the present and the future. As in philosophy, it is impossible to find “absolute truth” in history.
