Hagerman, Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island The Throne Speech contains five main announcements. Electricity rates will drop by 14 per cent beginning in March 2011. The network of primary health care centres will expand. A new palliative care centre will be established. Up to 14 new early years centres will open and a new Early Learning and Child Care Act will be introduced. Residents who purchase taxable goods outside Prince Edward Island and bring them into the province, or have them delivered here, must pay the 10 per cent revenue tax (PST) on those purchases. This applies even if other taxes were paid at the time of purchase. Learn more and get the required form

Red Cross thanks Islanders for Haiti, Pakistan Disaster Aid
The Canadian Red Cross has formally thanked Islanders for donations supporting two major disaster relief operations, the Haiti earthquake in January and Pakistan flood in August. Local volunteers (left) Kent Scales and Hugh Paton, Director of Fund Development Cathie Desborough and PEI Operations Manager Laura Johnson-Montigny present a thank-you citation, accepted on behalf of all Islanders by the Hon. Doug Currie, Minister of Justice and Public Safety. (Island Information Services photo). Justice and Public Safety Minister, Doug Currie accepted a thank-you plaque on behalf of all Islanders for their generous support this year for the devastating earthquake in Haiti and disastrous flooding in Pakistan. "We're a little province with a very big heart," said Laura Johnson-Montigny, operations manager for PEI Red Cross. "We welcome every opportunity to let Islanders know how Red Cross is using their donations directly to assist those devastated by the horrific disasters but also felt we should provide a small but tangible record of our appreciation for their support."
