Almost everyone has done printmaking. As a child, you may remember using the carved surface of a potato and paint to make prints on paper.
Printmaking is the process of creating multiple original images, or prints, from one original surface, called a plate or matrix. Matrices can be made of wood, metal, stone, linoleum, and acrylic glass. Printmakers can use a variety of media including water- or oil-based ink, paint, oil pastels, and water soluble solid pigments. Each of the prints in a print run is considered an original work of art. The artist typically signs, titles, and numbers the individual prints. A print run is usually numbered and referred to as a series or edition. For example, 5/20 indicates the work is the fifth print in a series of 20. Depending upon the techniques used, the prints can be produced from one plate or many plates printed on top of each other, each representing a separate color or design.

What is printmaking? Printmaking is any art form that involves transferring one image, from one
surface to another. Most often this includes a "printing plate" or some kind of matrix being pressed onto paper. Various printmaking methods include: intaglio : etching acid techniques such as line, aquatint, soft ground, lift
ground, embossing; Non acid techniques include: engraving, dry point, mezzotint,
crible relief : wood engraving, wood cuts, linocut, rubbings, etching, collagraph,
embossing, stamping stencil or serigraphy: Silk screen, screen printing, stencils and rubbings are the
only printmaking methods that do not involve working in a mirror image
(backwards). Screen printing involves creating a stencil that will block out ink

Botanical Printmaking: Art and Science Education in Botanical Gardens
Contributed by Leonore Alaniz, 519 East 82 Street, Apt. 5B, New York City, New York 10028, USA.
    Overview
    Historical Background
References to the process of nature printing and its uses began with Leonardo da Vinci's descriptions of ink recipes for botanical/leaf-printing. It was perhaps his interest and discussion of the process that inspired botanists (in particular German botanists), beginning in 1760, to further develop this medium. Their writings indicate an increasing demand for scientific information about the remedial applications of plants, and indeed they promoted the use of their illustrated and descriptive books to apothecaries, medical doctors and lay-people. These botanists printed few editions, inking the plant anew, (including its root system), with lamp-black for each impression. Their printing methods limited repeated use of a plant, and the greatest care was needed to assure consistent printing detail. Hand coloring was part of the documentation process, which at times obscured the delicate veins and skeletal plant structure. Detailed descriptions of the plant's remedial uses, location and time of harvest accompanied the printed plates, sometimes in two or three languages (German, Latin, French or English). The largest collection of botanical nature-prints is assembled in the book Ectypa Plantarium Ratisbonensium. It includes 1000 prints of small plants native to the region of Ravensburg in southern Germany.

Wood cheer
Carol Santora makes colorful scenes
by Leon Nigrosh
THE PRINTMAKING ART OF CAROL SANTORA At Surroundings Gallery, 377 Main Street, Gardner, through July 17. Tucked away in the North County town of Gardner, Surroundings Gallery is a tiny gem of an gallery. It's housed in a former livery stable built in 1880. Its rough-hewn post and beam interior beautifully frames the pristine white walls on which more than 30 woodcut prints by Carol Santora currently hang. Santora herself hails from nearby Westminster, where for the past 15 years she has been producing art, concentrating on wood block-printmaking. She employs several different printmaking methods, from the Japanese ukiyo-e style of multiple blocks, to the jigsaw method, and the reductive method of using one block for all the colors in a particular print. Although she often hand rubs individual prints, all of the works in this exhibit were pulled from an antique Poco proof press. To help visitors understand the different tools and methods, Santora has a display case in this exhibit showing actual tools with concise written explanations of how they are employed. Her series Fisherman's Catch presents an excellent example of just how the reductive technique works. Because only a few marks are cut into the original block, the first print is densely black, with an interesting, but barely discernible image. More marks are cut into the same block to create stage two, in which we can see a large fish mouth and eyes emerging from a swirl of bubbles.
