Participants may take these courses for graduate credit, or for professional development points. "Blissful Revitalization" is the way one student describes the program. Indeed, all our graduate workshops are dedicated to exploring the most recent research and innovative practices combined with the best of traditional approaches to literacy. The Institute on Writing, Reading, and Teaching provides teachers with an unusually fine opportunity for professional growth. Designed for teachers by teachers, the Institute, which is administered by Northeastern University, addresses the latest approaches to writing, reading, and learning. by Rosalind Tuesday, June 12, 2007 10:39 am My first session this morning is about a faculty development program at Florida comunity College at Jacksonville . They put together teams of 4 faculty and gave them extensive pedagogy, tech training and interactive learning training. The faculty use these skills to create courses that can be taught face-to-face, blended or fully online. The faculty get 15 hours of pedagogy, 12 hours of Blackboard and 6 hours of multimedia training. In addition they get mentoring, beta testing for their courses and other support for developing the class. They also get financial compensation and rewards for participating in the program which has been a key to its success. This is a remarkable program and makes me wish we had a centralized faculty development office at WFU to develop these sorts of programs. Perhaps that will come out of the strategic plan. What the Best College Teachers Do
by Bobbie Monday, March 22, 2010 8:37 am On March 19, I attended an inspirational presentation by Ken Bain who is the author of What the Best College Teachers Do . The program was co-sponsored by the Wake Forest University Schools of Business and the Teaching and Learning Center. Bain observed that students take three approaches to their learning: surface (trying to remember stuff); strategic (trying to make good grades) or a deep approach (trying to make meaning). It is the last approach where instructors can work to create an environment where deep learning can occur. During the session, Dr. Bain exhibited many of the characteristics of what makes a teacher great. His enthusiasm, knowledge of the subject, and sense of humor kept me engaged throughout the session. Carpenter Library visit
by Derrik Wednesday, March 25, 2009 11:07 am Cristina Yu made arrangements for Ellen Makaravage, Patty Strickland, and me to visit the Carpenter Library on Monday, March 23. The three of us had never been to Carpenter, so the purpose of the visit was to see the library and learn more about how they operate. We entered the hospital at the door closest to the public parking garage, then began the long walk to the far corner of the hospital. When we finally made it there, we saw that the front door has been set up for card access-staff and students only. The public is allowed access, but only by prior appointment or by buzzing the front desk via intercom. We learned later that the library has had some problems with a few people essentially setting up camp in the library, so they instituted the security not to limit access to library materials, but to help with crowd control.
