Privacy and Consumer Profiling
Introduction
Profiling is the recording and classification of behaviors. This occurs through aggregating information from online and offline purchase data, supermarket savings cards, white pages, surveys, sweepstakes and contest entries, financial records, property records, U.S. Census records, motor vehicle data, automatic number information, credit card transactions, phone records (Customer Proprietary Network Information or "CPNI"), credit records, product warranty cards, the sale of magazine and catalog subscriptions, and public records. Profiling has sparked an entire industry euphemistically labeled "Customer Relations Management" (CRM) or "Personalization." Companies collect information derived from a number of resources to build comprehensive profiles on individuals in order to sell products and to sell dossiers on behavior. This is often done without notice or extending a choice to the individual to opt-out of the dossier building. These dossiers may be used by marketers for target advertising, and they may be sold to government for law enforcement purposes. Companies also "enhance" dossiers that they already own by combining or "overlaying" information from other databases. These dossiers may link individual's identities to the following attributes:

COP Columns Profiling By The Police In Search Of Reality In re race and the behavior of police: Reporters and writers of editorials seem to lunge instinctively for the superficial, preferably embodied in easily remembered buzz phrases. One such is "racial profiling." The implication, and assumption, is that blacks are being targeted for reasons of racial hostility by the police. Generally this isn't true. If the writers knew it wasn't true, I'd regard them as honest prevaricators. But I think a lot of them reflexively believe it. Let me tell you a story. I was riding on Capitol Hill with a white cop who shall here be called Smith. We were in a black neighborhood. I was new to the beat and ignorant of the streets. We passed a beat-up car parked in front of a row house. It had Maryland tags. I didn't notice this, being, again, blankly unaware of how things worked. It also had a white guy sitting in the driver's seat, with a black guy next to him. Cops notice this stuff in a heartbeat. Smith went around the block and pulled in behind the car. We got out. Smith started giving the white guy a very hard time. At this date I can't begin to quote it verbatim, but it ran to, "What are you doing here? Huh? You wouldn't be buying drugs, would you? You have a job? Where do you live? "

Profiling
There is a great discussion about profiling going on in the comments to the previous post. To help, here is what I wrote on the subject in Beyond Fear (pp. 133-7): Good security has people in charge. People are resilient. People can improvise. People can be creative. People can develop on-the-spot solutions. People can detect attackers who cheat, and can attempt to maintain security despite the cheating. People can detect passive failures and attempt to recover. People are the strongest point in a security process. When a security system succeeds in the face of a new or coordinated or devastating attack, it's usually due to the efforts of people. On 14 December 1999, Ahmed Ressam tried to enter the U.S. by ferryboat from Victoria Island, British Columbia. In the trunk of his car, he had a suitcase bomb. His plan was to drive to Los Angeles International Airport, put his suitcase on a luggage cart in the terminal, set the timer, and then leave. The plan would have worked had someone not been vigilant. There's a dirty word for what Dean did that chilly afternoon in December, and it's

Overhead for Existing Mechanisms
Minimizing the amount of overhead imposed by profiling is critically important for the clever compiler, since in the quasistatic computing model, the end-user (and not just the programmer) will always be subjected to that overhead. How to instrument a program to extract performance information is a major topic in its own right; I briefly describe the commonly available profiling mechanisms available to C programmers on UNIX platforms prof gprof , and pixie - in Appendix . The different techniques have their pros and cons, but generally speaking, there's a tradeoff between the amount and accuracy of information gathered, and the overhead incurred at program run-time. The percentages shown in Table are in accord with the ``common wisdom'' - 510% for prof , 1015% for gprof , and 100200% for pixie Note that the tremendously outsized amount of overhead for pixie is due to the fact that instrumenting every single basic block gathers far more information than is necessary most of the time. One way to keep overhead reasonable is to gather exactly what is needed to perform the desired performance analysis and no more; by building the static call graph beforehand, one can reduce the amount of instrumentation added to the program, and still gather a

Requirements: Java 1.4 or later Although PV was conceived to handle the profiling output of Java 1, it works fine with the output generated by Java 2 if the "-prof" option is used (instead of the "-Xrunhprof" option, which generates Java 2 profiling output.)
For Java 2 either the "-Xrunhprof:cpu=old" or the "-classic -prof" switch can be used, neither of which worked without hiccups for me, but your mileage may vary.
I have no plans to add support for the Java 2 format to PV; the file format is very different. I'd be happy to integrate it if someone wants to take a shot at it, though. Thanks to enhancements by Luc Maisonobe, several different profiling formats can be recognized and read by PV. If any of my software has been helpful to you -or your company-, and you feel like expressing your gratitude beyond saying "Thank you" -which is also appreciated-, please note that I have an

    Task-Based Profiling
Select from several common profiling tasks, such as standard CPU or memory profiling, or simple monitoring. The options have been preset to default values by experts; you can customize settings for a specific application. You precisely control the amount of overhead the profiler imposes, and therefore analyze the application while it runs at almost full speed. You can store analysis data for offline processing: Save and export snapshots of collected results as CSV, HTML, or XML files.
    Heap Walker
Use the Heap Walker to evaluate the Java heap contents and to identify unnecessary references that cause memory leaks. You can browse classes and instances of classes on the heap, fields of each instance or class, and references to each instance. Use jHat compatible OQL queries to analyze the contents of a heapdump: Benefit from basic syntax highlighting and code completion for OQL.
    Profiling Points
Place profiling points in your source code to more precisely control the collection of profiling results, similar to debugger breakpoints.

Earl Warren, 14th Chief Justice of the United States, has become an icon to generations of Americans who believe in the gains for civil rights and personal freedom that were the hallmark of his tenure on the Supreme Court. In 1940, Earl Warren was the attorney general of California, and he delivered a speech where he cautioned against bigotry based upon national origin. He said, It should be remembered that practically all aliens have come to this country because they like our land and our institutions better than those from whence they came. They have attached themselves to the life of this country in a manner that they would hate to change and the vast majority of them will, if given a chance, remain the same good neighbors that they have been in the past regardless of what difficulties our nation may have with the country of their birth. History proves this to be true . . . .We must see to it that no race prejudices develop and that there are no petty persecutions of law-abiding people. Then, in the wake of the attack on Pearl Harbor, by January and February 1942, Attorney General Warren directed the preparation of maps showing all Japanese-owned lands in California, called upon the state's district attorneys to enforce the Alien Land Law against Japanese landowners, and said the presence of Japanese in California provided the opportunity for a repetition of Pearl Harbor. And by March he advocated the exclusion of all Japanese from within 200 miles of the California coast.

Professionals engaged in the practice of criminal profiling have historically included a broad spectrum of investigators, behavioral scientists, social scientists, and forensic scientists. Their involvement in unsolved casework has been most commonly concerned with criminal investigative efforts and suspect identification. In that capacity, multidisciplinary criminal profiling techniques have been sought out to help reduce suspect pools, assist with case linkage, and develop investigatively relevant leads and strategies in unsolved cases. Criminal profilers are also called in to assist attorneys with court cases that involve complex or bizarre behavioral evidence. Critical Issues Home About Us News Site Map ... Education News Racial Profilin g of African, Hispanic (Latino), and Asian Americans What is racial profiling? The most common example of police racial profiling is "DWB", otherwise known as "driving while black". This refers to the practice of police targeting African Americans for traffic stops because they believe that African Americans are more likely to be engaged in criminal activity. While racial profiling is illegal, a 1996 Supreme Court decision allows police to stop motorists and search their vehicles if they believe trafficking illegal drugs or weapons. More traffic stops leads to more arrests, which further skews the racial profiling statistics against African Americans. Studies have shown that African Americans are far more likely to be stopped and searched. Are African Americans really committing more crimes or are they just caught more often because the police target them? This is a vicious cycle that even the strictest law enforcement advocates would admit is patently unfair. What can you do if you are stopped?

Establishing the profiles of prospects
Tip Profiling This method of rapidly qualifying prospects is often used by companies who carry out presales by phone. A prospect list is imported into the Open ERP system as a set of partners and the operators then pose a series of questions to each prospect by phone. Responses to these questions enable each prospect to be qualified automatically which leads to a specific service being offered based on their responses. The products offered by Tiny at these exhibitions are:
  • training on Open ERP – for independent people or small companies, partner contract – for IT companies that intend to offer an Open ERP service, Open ERP as SaaS – for small companies, a meeting in conjunction with a partner to provide a demonstration aimed at providing a software integration – for companies that are slightly larger.
The Tiny company has therefore put a decision tree in place based on the answers to several questions posed to prospects. These are given in the following figure Example of profiling customer prospects by the Tiny company Example of profiling customer prospects by the Tiny company The sales person starts by asking the questions mentioned above and then with a couple of minutes of work can decide what to propose to the prospective customer.
